Free Pirates of the Burning Sea for Australians

PC News | Courtesy of BigPond.
In a move that has the potential to not only shake up the MMORPG market, but the entire industry in Australia, BigPond have officially announced today that Pirates of the Burning Sea will be distributed free of charge to Australians when the game is released on 27th February.

Players who are interested in downloading or securing a copy upon release, are able to pre-register at BigPond's Game Arena website, where you'll be first in line to download, or secure one of the 100,000 DVD copies of the game. Players will then have a free seven day trial subscriptiuon with on-going subscriptions for the game starting from $15.95 per month. While you don't have to be with BigPond to play, members will receive a 20% discount off the on-going subscriptions of the game.

BigPond Group Managing Director, Mr Justin Milne, said making the game so easily available and for free, demonstrates BigPond's commitment to gamers.

"We're dedicated to bringing the very best in digital entertainment to fans and we have used our leading position in the online games community to secure thus unique opportunity for Australian gamers," Milne said.

CEO of developer Flying Lab Software, Mr Russell Williams said, "We are delighted to be working with BigPond to bring Pirates of the Burning Sea to Australian fans. We are looking forward to welcoming Australian games to the online Pirates community and we're sure the hype will be at fever pitch by the time we launch."

Pirates of the Burning Sea is an MMORPG that looks to shake off the dominance of World of Warcraft by allowing players to take to the Caribbean seas of 1720. Players live life on the virtual high seas captaining their own ship and developing fighting skills as they interact with thousands of other players from around the world. PALGN will have in-depth coverage of Pirates of the Burning Sea very shortly, and we'll be sure to let you know about any further developments into this exciting venture.

If this does end up having any effect on Blizz's WoW, I wouldn't be suprised if within 2 patches more features and sea travel were introduced. xD Hell its already there (if you didnt know you can travel on boats in WoW) all they need to do is expand on it. icon_lol.gif

Tsk - PotBS is -nothing- like WoW. The avatar is there for show, the real stars are the ships icon_wink.gif

I don't think anybody saw this coming. With a bit of luck this game will take off, and lead to more MMOs being released this way. Boo for up-front then ongoing costs!

Nothing's free...there's always a catch

Well, there is the monthly payment, it's a standard MMO in that regard.

Telstra's proactive approach in all things gaming kind of makes me regret I'm with Optus icon_sad.gif

I wonder if it's worth a switch?

P.S. it's not just this news that has me thinking. I've been considering changing services for a while.

What's the bet that the game is deliberatly designed to use up all your bandwidth so you go over your download limit to make telstra a few thousand per subscriber per month icon_wink.gif. I mean have you seen some of their plans? I mean they offer ADSL2+ with only 600mb download limit and charge $150 per gb over the limit on top of the already ridiculously expensive monthly charges, anyone who gets adsl2+ has a high likelyhood of downloading at least 10gb (and if not why the hell would you need more than 1500/256?) so that's over $1400 for using your bandwidth for 1.5 hours (assuming 15mbit/second which is about the norm but theoritical max of 24mbit would drop that to less than an hour :O).
IMO anything even remotely related to telstra is pretty much going to be a scam.

...whoops sorry for the telstra rant, I just find it very unethical to offer such unreasonable plans.

I agree about the Bigpond bashing, but lets get back to the Pirate game. I've been looking forward to this game since they announced it, it seems so much like an MMO of Sid Meier's Pirates! which is one of the most stupidly addictive games I know of, and hey I love pirate stuff. So I put in my email on the site, how do you get one of the disc copies?

PS Did other winners of the Fury giveaway get their games? I was on the list but it never came.

Is there a single MMO launched since WoWs dominance that hasn't said similar things?

And what about the rest of us who hate WoW? Why would we want something that'd attract those unwashed hoards? When will they learn.

I like pirate games as much as the next person, but I'm not so sure I want other fools spamming pirate talk at me all day long. Sid Meier's Pirates was an awesome game, but "add MMO" does not equal a better game by any means. For example, something like Oblivion, one of my favourite games, would be ruined if made into an MMO IMHO. Not that I'm saying this game will suck, but I have my doubts.

I did, but how do you know you were on the list as there was never an official list of "winners" released

One of the admins, Luke I think, checked for people who requested to know if they'd won. I was on the list, but never received my copy.

Also I love Telstra's gaming support, but they have horrible plans. I'm staying with Optus, although free bandwidth on Steam is so tempting!

Both Telstra and Optus are complete and utter fail IMO, for gamers your best bet is either Internode or iiNet. But never ever go with Telstra or Optus unless that's the only possible internet service you can get in your area (unlikely). You can get free quota Steam stuff on Internode, and both Internode and iiNet have absolutely loads of quota free game related (or non game related) files.

Anyhow I'm not going to get drawn into a rant on why anyone with Telstra is getting ass-raped, but on-topic I personally don't see why this is such good news. It's virtually just a 7 day trial. I'm actually disappointed that there isn't one for gamers in other countries. For such a 'different' MMO, not offering a trial is just stupid.

It's such good news because every else in the world you don't have to buy the game. Even with WoW's trials, you still have to buy the box to keep playing.

I like free stuff but pirates are a bit overrated

I registered for this trial
