November US sales data released

Wii News | Duty calls again.
The holiday buying period has officially begun, and sales have started to pick up, particularly in the US where the shopping season is kicked off by the so called 'black friday' Thanksgiving weekend.

Last month the software charts were dominated by Guitar Hero, but while Activision's music monster returned on PS2 and Wii, this months multi-platform releases and a certain space travelling plumber made their mark on the charts. Call of Duty 4 for Xbox 360 was the sales champ for the month, and the PS3 version also charted at number seven. Similar story with Assassin's Creed, which came in third on 360 and tenth on PS3. Wii exclusive Super Mario Galaxy was Nintendo's software champ, selling over a million units in its debut month, more then Super Mario Sunshine sold in its first four months combined.

In terms of hardware sales, The DS was the undisputed champion, selling 1.53 million units over the period, a figure we believe is a new record for gaming hardware of any type for a single month in the US. Next up, the Wii continued its pace, but didn't quite make a million for the month, selling 981,000 consoles. the Xbox 360 retained third place with 770,000, and the PS3 picked up some steam from its second major price cut, selling 466,000 for the month. PSP and PS2 sold 567,000 and 496,000 respectively, and GBA numbers were not released publicly by NPD this month.

Here are the full results:

Hardware
Nintendo DS - 1.53 million
Wii - 981,000
Xbox 360 - 770,000
PSP - 567,000

And Microsoft (previously) said they outsold PS3 2:1 ...

Wow good for Activision selling 2 million copies of CoD4.

I'm surprised it outsold Mario Galaxy though.

2.5:1 would be 1,165,000 360s.

These numbers show about 1.6:1

back when i was a tacker playing pitfall and Hero, i wouldn't have even thought that activision would exist now, let alone be selling heaps of games and acquiring studios.

My math was off, 1.75:1. Still close to 2.

I suppose close is a relative thing, in this case. It's still a easily a discrepancy of more than 100,000 consoles.

More interesting to me is that there isn't a single DS game in the software charts. They routinely chart highly here and the DS hardware sales are clearly beating the pants of everyone no matter what measure you use ... but not so much the software, it seems.

phew icon_smile.gif Ratio closed

Edit: seems to me that the ds probably has more varied tastes, god, i've seen like a 50 year old woman buying cooking mama icon_smile.gif

There wasn't a big title released in November for the DS was there? Zelda was October wasn't it? I think that the lack of a killer release around xmas time would have something to do with it.

That's true, it's only one month and there hasn't been too many titles release for the DS of late.

surely the people who bought the hardware also bought a game though

^Maybe with such a wide demographic of people buying the console, software sales were high, but not for specific games. With multi million sellers like Nintendogs, Brain Age, NSMB, Mario Kart, Metroid and Pokemon catering to all different markets, it would be weird for one title to rise significantly above the rest at this time of year IMO.

edit: Woops, yeah agree with your edit, missed it when typing.

Uhhh.... as a ratio it looks close, but in reality its still 25% LESS xbox sales then they claimed.

and THAT is huge.

The DS is selling in America now as a bundle with Zelda and Nintendogs, so it wouldn't surprise me if people didn't pick up another game with the system.

Great sales for Galaxy. 360 software continues to be insane. PS3 below GameCube levels.

they actually said they outsold the PS3 2:1 on the Black Friday holiday.... not in November itself

^^ Thanks for the 'negatives' don't know how i'll sleep tonight, I'm just quoting what Microsoft said, Black Friday Week sales have a major effect on the total month figures - so if they said they outsold PS3 2:1 over that week then you'd expect the same effect over the month ... only about 20% off the mark. So the fact that sales over the month were not 2:1 it implies that MS initial comment was a 'guesstimate' at best. if you read my other posts about Au sales i've actually commented on how well the 360 has been selling recently.

That's where you interpreted wrong, sales aren't a uniform thing which can be accurately said to be at the same rate each week.

Great sales all round though, think that Galaxy has outsold Sunshine's first 3 months too, which is nice, especially considering that Sunshine hit close to 3 million in the US in it's lifetime.

And I thought Sony was the one with the defence force...

Facts:
40% of Xbox 360's sold in Nov were sold in Black Friday Week, 310k/770k (BTW Not BF Holiday, that's only the day following Thanks Giving).
http://www.n4g.com/News-89004.aspx
MS say they outsold PS3 2:1 in Black Friday Week.
http://kotaku.com/gaming/console-wars/microsoft-sold-310k-xbox-360s-last-week-328176.php
There are no BF Week sales figures for PS3, just for whole month.
There is no way of testing MS claim, except that total monthly figures were not 2:1. That's my point.

The thing that gets me is that they're still selling 400K+ PS2 consoles... How long will that thing last?
It's cheap, and it has a buttload of casual games/games in general. So I think parents are still going to go for the PS2 as a present for the kiddies just because it is so much cheaper than the others.
