The Super Smash Bros. series has become so popular because it is such an easy game to pick up, but while easy to play the game is actually surprisingly deep. In the Smash Bros games, players try to knock their opponent off the screen. By kicking and punching you will increase a player's HP, the higher the HP the easier it will be to kick an opponent off the screen. It's a really simple system that differentiates Smash Bros from every other fighting game out there. With such a wide variety of attacks as well as items thrown into the mix it is easy to see why Smash Bros. is so popular.
Nintendo will be sticking to the same formula with Brawl, with very little change made to the core fighting. Purists will be happy to know that they can play the game with the Gamecube controller, but you can also play with the classic controller, the Wii remote and nunchuk together or just with the Wii remote on its side. It will also be possible to create profiles with personalised button configurations for each control method, so you won't have to keep editing the controls. Even though it seems like it would be just about impossible to play Brawl with just the Wii remote early feedback on the controls suggests that all controls methods work well.
In terms of gameplay modes there will be be plenty to keep Smash Bros. fans entertained. There's a classic mode where you just go through the stages trying to defeat as many characters as you can, there will also be an events mode again, as well as a stage builder. Those who like customisation will also want to try the special brawl mode. The most exciting addition to Brawl is the Wi Fi mode which will allow players to fight against anyone around the world.
Several stages have been unveiled for the game including Delfino Plaza, a pictochat inspired stage, Yoshi's Island, Smashville (an Animal Crossing inspired stage), a WarioWare stage as well as Kid Icarus' Skyworld. As with the previous Smash Bros. games there should be many stages to unlock as well, and there will be several versions of each stage based on the time of the day.
Those who prefer to throw objects rather than (god forbid) actually attack an opponent will be pleased to know that there are several new items in Brawl. There are going to be far too many items to list here, but those who played the previous games will be pleased to know the beam sword, fire flower, freezie, home-run bat, party ball and super mushroom will all be back. This doesn't mean there will be a shortage of new items though, the banana peel is sure to be just as annoying as in Mario Kart and the golden hammer (which will basically KO an opponent immediately) will be a highly sought after item.
In terms of characters there are a whole bunch of newcomers and veteran fighters in Brawl. The most notable new character included in Brawl is Sonic the Hedgehog, but other new characters include Snake, Pit, Wario, a Zero Suit variation of Samus, Ike, a Pokémon Trainer, Diddy Kong, Meta Knight, Lucas and King Dedede. Characters returning from previous Smash Bros. games include Mario, Link, Kirby, Pikachu, Fox, Samus, Zelda, Bowser, Donkey Kong, Yoshi, Peach and the Ice Climbers. Whether or not some of our other favourite characters will return such as Captain Falcon and Young Link is currently unknown, but we've certainly got our fingers crossed.
Currently there is no PAL release date for Super Smash Bros. Brawl despite the fact that it is set for release in America early next month. We'll keep you updated once Nintendo Australia lets us know when we'll be able to get our hands on this highly anticipated game.
With the Super Smash Bros. Dojo still providing daily updates on Super Smash Bros. Brawl there is still plenty to learn and plenty that gamers will learn as they play through the game themselves. However, just based on what we already know it is clear that Super Smash Bros. Brawl is a game that should be on every Wii owners wish-list.
