Wii regains US sales lead

Wii News | While Guitar Hero dominates software sales for October
Last month the Xbox 360, with a little help from a certain space marine, managed to just outsell Nintendo's sales juggernaut Wii by 26,000 units. While Halo remained the number one game in October, the month was dominated by Activisions's Guitar Hero III. The music game took four of the top ten positions for the month including both PS2 versions (with and without the guitar peripheral), although the PS3 version's sales fell outside the top ten.

In terms of hardware sales, the Wii managed to re-take the hardware lead handily at 519,000 units sold, bringing its US sales total to 5,038,685. Xbox 360 was the next next-gen console, selling 366,000 to bring it past the seven million mark total (7,092,151). The PlayStation 3 continued to struggle, and sold 121,000 to bring it's US total to 1,980,649.

October was a four week reporting period compared to five weeks for September, and as a result, sales dropped for the month in absolute terms to US$643.3 million from September's $778.7 million. However, 2007 sales continues to go from strength to strength in the US, with year to date industry sales up 73% compared to the same period in 2006.

This may sound stupid, apart form the huge success of the Wii i think the 360 is doing an amazing job for so many broken consoles. I love this Gen in gaming icon_smile.gif

I guess PS3 outselling Wii in Japan for the first time (Oct sales)isn't that newsworthy ...

EDIT: meant last week sales, not oct.

wow, first time I've seen a software list that actually lists units sold - the Gfk ones we see for the australian sales don't show the units. Amazing the difference between the 1st and 10th - I'd be really interested to see how dramatically it falls away from there. Activision would have to be stoked with the performance of GH3, talk about dominant sales!

Heh, and the PS2 still continues to out sell the PS3 (in the US). I hope developers keep supporting the PS2 for a while.

Wow that's in excess of a million copies of Guitar Hero across all platforms.

Yeah I didn't realise he was talking about this week (considering he said October Sales). Crazy. Especially considering wasn't it just last week the 360 beat the PS3?

^ By about 200 units, yeah.

Note: I'm not usually this nerd-like, just been a slow week full of exams hence the never-ending net surfing. icon_biggrin.gif

Yeah, my mistake, I meant last weeks sales - too many figures in my head. I put it up on the forums a couple of days ago:

We generally only report Japanese sales quarterly, when Famitsu/Enterbrain release their quarterly figures. Reporting weekly Japanese sales would be a bit much for a PAL focused site, and it would be slightly disingenuous to only report the 'exception' weeks (like last week when the 360 outsold the PS3) just because they're 'interesting.'

US data has been released monthly this year (it was only every now and then before that), and in my opinion that's a reasonable frequency for reporting as news. We're also more closely linked with the US market then the Japanese.
