Speed Racer game on the way

Wii News | Go Speed Racer, go!
Warner Brothers Interactive sent word around this morning that they will be releasing a video game tie-in for the upcoming Speed Racer film, which is set to be released in 2008. The film will be directed by the Wachowski brothers, known for their work on The Matrix trilogy, will star Emile Hirsch as Speed, and boasts a supporting cast of Christina Ricci, Matthew Fox, Susan Sarandon and John Goodman.

The video game will be developed by New Zealand based group Sidhe Interactive, who are well known for their PSP and PSN racing/puzzle effort Gripshift, so it looks like this one is in good hands. Players will be able to get behind the wheel of the Mach 5 and other signature vehicles for high octane racing. The developers will be working closely with the film crew to make the game as accurate as possible.

"Speed Racer is an exceptionally creative property and teamed with the Wachowski brothers’ vision it makes for action-packed racing gameplay," said Samantha Ryan, Senior Vice President, Development and Production, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. "The game will capture the intensity of the racing in the film to give gamers and movie fans a chance to take the wheel after the experience the film."

"We are very excited about this natural extension from the Speed Racer film to the videogame. Larry and Andy are videogame fans themselves, so they believe that an interactive game is a key component to the entire Speed Racer experience." said film producer Joel Silver.

The Wii and DS versions of Speed Racer will be available when the film comes out on May 8, 2008. The PlayStation 2 version of the game will be available when the DVD is released.

funny how they can never get it right, maybe one day. Anyone with a good theory on why that is?

^ Too much money & not enough talent and/or effort.

Or the fact that it's such a money making opportunity, actually giving a sh*t about forging a game with substance is null and void. That would mean divulging more time which equals less capital.

Of course speed racer could be the greatest movie tie in ever, although i doubt it.

Movie studios should give away the rights to a game company that has proven that it respects these kinds of things. Rather than flogging the rights to any old johnny who is basically trading on the name rather than previous achievements of their own. Yes i know it will never happen......since when did artistic integrity matter to corporate money men. I also imagine that most of these titles are contracted out after the rights acquisition, which also wouldn't help.

Depends if the Dev's are fan's of the original series as well won't it, its when you've got dev's who love the series as well that will put the extra effort into the game. Well, thats my theory anyway.

It all really comes down to the amount of time given to a developer in which to develop a title. It's quite surprising how quickly some of these titles have to be developed. The other issue is that Publishers often don't care whether a game is good or not, instead relying on the cover to sell the movie. Unfortunately, the Publishers are right on that front. It doesn't matter how good or bad a game is, as long as the cover has a picture of the latest hot property it will sell by the bucket load.

So of course, why spend the money to get a good game developed when you know you can save money, get a lesser game, and still make plenty of moolah. Heck I know I'll probably buy it and I haven't heard a single detail about the game. Speed Racer is one of my favourite cartoons so I look forward to getting behind the wheel of the Mach 5!

This is in no way a dis at the NZ developers, mind you. Hopefully they can make a decent game in the time they have.
