136Kg limit for Wii Fit Balance Board

Wii News | Do you meet the minimum system requirements?
According to Nintendo Japan’s Wii Fit website, the upcoming ‘Wii Fit-Balance Board’ has a maximum weight limitation of 136 kilograms or 300 pounds. Based on this, it’s apparent that some of the more obese members of the gaming community may be unable to utilise Nintendo’s new get fit peripheral, nor play the included Wii Fit game bundle.

Earlier in the year Wii Fit producer Shigeru Miyamoto suggested in an interview with 1up that a new ‘super-size’ board may yet be available for countries outside of Japan. If a stronger board becomes a reality, we can only wonder if the peripheral will weigh extra or cost more to manufacture due to the necessary reinforcements. Nintendo currently plan to launch Wii Fit in Japan on December 1 and in other regions sometime early in 2008. Final details as they come to hand.

Best caption EVER.

Anyhow, kinda stupid considering that they're targeting overweight people with this thing.. icon_neutral.gif

Way to go!!! Marketing at its finest with a piece of equipment not compatible with the most intended target group.

Nintendo: "Sorry buddy, your to fat to get fit, we only want skinny people to get skinnier"

priceless.

Yeah but who do you know that's over 136kg?

I don't see this thing making you lose weight.

Taco you are right. It's aimed at Black people who like to dance, white girls who like to practice balancing, and asian families.

Not once do we see the target market as >136kg in the promo videos icon_razz.gif

Also I would like to add that there are a lot of people over 136kg that would miss out from this game which is unfortunate. Just because you weigh 40 kg doesn't mean there are other people out there who have adult bodies.

I for one am 100kg, tall, dark and handsome (minus the dark and handsome) but does this mean I am fat? I could stand to lose a few kilos but who can't these days.

Just saying this to make it clear they never marketed this to the >136kg market at all, and that making fun of fatness is not cool.

You're spot on Mitch, leaning and moving your leg to balance your body isn't going to help anyone lose weight. I think it's more designed to keep you in shape or tone yourself... more, for housewives who have a spare 30 minutes to 'work out' using it.

It's not like if you weigh 140kg it will stop working or break though(probably). It seems like they just picked a close enough number to keep themselves safe (300 pound rounds off nicely).

i'm more afraid i'll mistake it as weight scales one day and break it.

Yikes, I'm actually pretty close - about 132 or 133kg, I think. It's not that I'm really fat, it's just that I'm 6 foot 7 and well, big:

Having said that, I've already tried the board in person, and it seemed pretty darn sturdy.

so in order to play Wii Fit you must be fit to begin with?

So basically it can hold 2 of me, awesome icon_razz.gif

It wouldn't be such a great device for losing weight but I guess its capable of working your stabiliser muscles a bit. You really need a high cardio work out to lose weight though and its pretty limited for building muscle too. Not even close to a substitute for the gym. But I guess if you do no other exercise its better than nothing.

^ Natch. The name 'Wii Fit' is actually just a bastardized bit of street slang, as if to say "Yo, we be fit!"

Peoples, that's the Japanese Version, I'm expecting a far larger board for America/Australia.

If "weigh under 136 kilos" is your definition of fit, then I'm very scared.

i read this and first i thought: "i don't even know what i weigh..."

then i thought: "who cares? it's not as if i was going to get this anyway..."
Yay, I can fit two of me on the board plus a 24KG baby

I can see big people (possibly body builders) being more upset than fat people though

if people over 136kg want to play it then they can work there ass off to play it. (it gets you fit even without playing it) but yeh i see it more of something to get the fat kids doing stuff rather then sitting down playing games. cant see to many adults over 136kg wanting to use it.

i can't wait to hear reports of sumos injuring themselves because they didn't obey the requirments when this gets released in japan

Maybe that's how they intend for people to actual lose weight; not through physical exercise through playing wii fit, but by being shamed in k-mart as the hot blonde trainee serving you with wii fit smugly points out the weight limit on the box, looks you up and down, gives you the ol' stink eye, and then makes you sign a liability waver in case you fall while using wii fit, and can't get back up.

136kg = 21.5stone.

There's no way you weigh 21 stone icon_razz.gif

I am a fat guy, and I weigh about 100kg...

Over 136kg is really really fat. If you weigh this much, I would be more concerned with dying from heart failure any second than whether you can use wii fit. The strain of standing up to use it would probably kill you anyway.....

Anyone who weighs more then 140kg shouldn't be looking to lose weight with a gaming console. They need a doctor and a personal trainer.
I agree with the last two posts.

Wii Fit isn't really designed to make you lose huge amounts of weight. It's more for increased flexability, and shaving off a couple kilos.
I can just see it now...someone having to take the board back to EB games or where ever cause it broke then they have to get out the scales and weigh you to see if you were over the limit before they give you a replacement hehehe

Don't take Nintendo's naming principles at face value. From the 'exercises' it offers, Wii Fit is nothing more than a toning tool. Hence if the problem is actually excessive weight or obesity, then the only way to quash that is with the aid of good old fashioned cardio vascular fitness. If one wants to build muscle and create phenomenal definition, then it's weight resistance training for you.

As far as the weight limit on the board goes, everything is stress tested to a limit as a form of quality control and all that has been said at this stage is that the Japanese board can only handle 136kg. What else can be expected from a piece of mere plastic?

The bottom line is: It's Nintendo's way of severely covering their ass in regards to liability in the case of damages or injury. See those "Take a break" screens coming up when playing Wii Sports etc? The wrist straps that come with the Wii Motes? It's all part and parcel of the sort of 'ammunition' that Nintendo's lawyers could use in court to defend them should someone try and step up to the plate and try and "win" some money from them.
