Online play confirmed for Smash Bros Brawl

Wii News | Megaton revealed on official website.
It's long been rumoured, hinted at and speculated, but never promised or confirmed. But on today's update on the official Super Smash Bros Brawl website, all was finally made clear. Under the update heading 'Wi-Fi play' series director Masahiro Sakurai at last revealed what everyone wanted to hear with the straightforward statement 'This game supports Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection. If you connect your Wii to the Internet, you can enjoy linked battles with distant people!'

The post continues with info about how the online play will work. First up, it's mentioned that connections over long distances may be affected by lag and may not run smoothly, for which Sakurai apologises.

Next, Sakurai describes the 'friend' play - while it's not mentioned how exactly you will do it (although we're pretty sure we can guess), he confirms you can register friends and play against them freely. Friend mode also features a 'taunt' system, where you can create up to four text based taunt message and save them, and then use them in game in the form of a speech bubble. There is, of course, also a random matchmaking mode where you can play against anyone worldwide, but messages and names are not available in this mode.

The last Smash Bros game was one of the highest selling multiplayer games of last generation, so it will be interesting to see exactly how quickly an online community develops for the series. Of course, PAL gamers will have to wait until 2008 to get in on the action.

Megaton? Nah. Colossalton~!

Voice chat could still happen, and I'd be a little disheartened if it didn't. It could come in the form of an optional headset, whereas the taunts are mostly for the non-headset brandishing folk.

Wrong, the only form of defense is: IT'S NINTENDO!

Seriously though, great announcement. Nintendo may be slow with the online scene but at least we can see they're not stupid enough to miss an opportunity like this. icon_smile.gif

Much fun shall ensue.

I don't think fighting games have really reached the point that shooters and racing games have released where everyone thinks everything should have online, though - most likely because fighting games are so much rarer anyways, and also fighting games are a lot more dependent on having no lag.

Plus as has been mentioned, its Nintendo, so its OMG TEH AWESOME!!11!1 news when you consider there is what, 1 online Wii game at the moment?

It is great news thats for sure, and as some have kinda said, it would be silly if Nintendo didn't have online for Smash Bros
Now heres hoping that SSB on 64 is released on VC sometime soon before release; much like Super Metroid was released nearing Metroid Prime Corruption

But then again its still a surprise its actually confirmed finally icon_biggrin.gif

Hrmm while this is good news and while I did enjoy Mario Strikers online, it needs voice chat. It's need a global voice chat system where you can chat to your mate and organise games.

This is the biggest gripe I have with the PS3 and Wii. I play a lot of games with my friends, normally starting from the dash board. I hate having to pyshically use my mobile to organise a game with a mate!

But all and all, I'm happy it's in there. As they said a while back that they are would be accessing whether Brawl will be online.

it'd be nice if they could integrate the calender to set up/schedule games.

BOOM!

I doubt Nintendo will be able to print enough game discs with the amount of astonishing sales I foresee this title will have...
