The post continues with info about how the online play will work. First up, it's mentioned that connections over long distances may be affected by lag and may not run smoothly, for which Sakurai apologises.
Next, Sakurai describes the 'friend' play - while it's not mentioned how exactly you will do it (although we're pretty sure we can guess), he confirms you can register friends and play against them freely. Friend mode also features a 'taunt' system, where you can create up to four text based taunt message and save them, and then use them in game in the form of a speech bubble. There is, of course, also a random matchmaking mode where you can play against anyone worldwide, but messages and names are not available in this mode.
The last Smash Bros game was one of the highest selling multiplayer games of last generation, so it will be interesting to see exactly how quickly an online community develops for the series. Of course, PAL gamers will have to wait until 2008 to get in on the action.
