SNK announces first Neo-Geo VC titles

Wii News | Pricing confirmed as well.
According to IGN, SNK has confirmed that Neo-Geo titles will be coming to the Virtual Console. The company stated that it would 'release several of (its) greatest Neo-Geo games via the Virtual Console'.

The Neo-Geo was a console released in 1990 as the 'deluxe' (and ultra-expensive) full arcade experience at home. All of SNK's arcade titles were released on the home system at extremely high prices, including the King of Fighters and Samurai Shodown series of fighting games.

Neo-Geo Virtual Console games will cost 900 Wii points and the first three games released on the Virtual Console will be Fatal Fury, World Heroes and Art of Fighting. There is no word from Nintendo Australia yet as to whether we'll get these titles on the local VC, but we'll keep you informed.

900, not bad but aren't Neo-Geo games huge? the Wii has precious little memory as it is!

WOW!

KoF, Metal Slug and Fatal Fury, Art of Fighting, Bust a Move have all been released on ps2/xbox etc already but i would definately look foward to Twinkle Star Sprites xD and probably the more unusual, rare titles.

from what i can remember from emulation, the games range from 8mbs to 2-300mbs. The biggest ones are typically the KoFs.

I just remembered! they need to put in Last Blade 1 and 2!

Yes, this is a major problem as the games I want are typically the bigger ROMs. Although good compression should avoid some of these issues.

The problem first and foremost is -

Fatal Fury Special (360 XLA) - online play, achievements, widescreen support, online leaderboards (although I'm not the biggest fan on the option NOT to disable the gfx filter)

Fatal Fury (Wii VC) - ROM port

400 M$ points = $6.60 AU to 900 Ninety points = $13.5 AU

OK, now I can understand that a tonne more titles will most likely be hitting the Wii VC because it is port a emulated ROM but the pricing different is just insane. Twice the price for a Wii VC when it's a vastly inferior verison? I hope SNK playmore decide to tell us well in advance which games are making their way to the 360 so we don't run the chance of double dipping (as I would buy the 360 verison over the Wii any day).

I admit there is SOME merit in having a 'clean' port, but for me, and many others I would assume, the lack of WS, online support and any type of save abilitiy is frustating. Online play with mates is the kind of thing we have come to expect in this generation. All us 25+ something year old's love playing retro games with our school mates. Plus I don't see the classic controller being any better then the 360's for fighting games (although it will be good enough, I'm just saying it's not a reason to prefer the Wii VC games).

World Heros though is seriously on my list!!! And owning the complete collection of KOF.

David - What's your take on this (being a follow retro nut).

The price thing is true, as is online play. Widescreen support seems pretty spurious though, considering the games are hard coded in 4:3.

But so far VC emulation has been near perfection, and XBLA emulation has been pretty poor. The stupid 50Hz VC Mega Drive games is a poor decision, but they are still perfectly emulated. VC emulation is far, far better then the awful mushy, screen tearing, blurry emulation by Digital Eclipse of most old games on XBLA.

Then again, the PAL Neo Geo ran at 50Hz, so that could be a worry...

True again, but they're actually ultra-cheap on either console compared to what SNK fans are used to paying. Just buy whatever you want I'd say.

As I said, widescreen seems pretty moot, and they will likely support the VC interrupt feature. The Neo Geo did support save games via a memory card, so hopefully that's emulated. But they're arcade games, apart from an interrupt what kind of save do you need?

Can I have what you're smoking? The 360 d-pad is a turd, and the CC d-pad is outstanding.

Although you'd really want a joystick for either, I'm getting this one as soon as Samurai Shodown hits.

^ Ah come on. World Heroes is great! icon_smile.gif. It's not deep or anything, but I remember loving it at the arcades for some sick reason. While I didn't like FF or AoF all that much, KOF bought the best elements of those two into a great balanced game. Plus Terry is the bomb.

The CC doesn't fit well in my hands but it's functional I agree. 360 pad is fine, but I will agree not ideal, I had zero problems with SFII and DOA4.

Save feature, it's small gripe, but I like my highscores to be save automatically.

I haven't had many issues with arcade ports on 360 XLA (mind you, I only play the games I like). Street Fighter 2, MKIII and FF are great ports and emulated nicely. I have heard of issues with some though like Contra. But generally it's very well done. It's certainly way better then the SNES/Megadrive ports (ie arcade -> SNES/Megadrive).

Price is a major issue here. Claiming that Neo Geo was expensive to begin with doesn't change the fact one is twice the price as the other. I cannot understand the logic behind SNK's thinking other then to make a quick buck on the VC Wii front because of the Wii's runaway success in Japan. When it comes down to it, if the price structure was similar and the emulation bar 'extras' was there, I probably wouldn't complain.

The sick thing is because both are different ie XLA features, yet not 100$ accurate and VC Wii being featureless but 100% accurate I'm tempted to get both for my most beloved games.

RE - Joystick, wow that's a good price Dave. I may import that as well when Neo Geo games hits Australian shores. Any ideas when we are getting them btw?

As I recall, it was because you could do Dragon's <- + K move continuously and beat the computer one-handed, every time. icon_lol.gif

Waku Waku 7, Windjammers, Thrash Rally... so much goodness!!!

If Nintendo Australia decide to screw us over, im region switching for sure.

I am a diehard SNK supporter, so this news is poetry in motion.

I'll be waiting for Waku Waku 7 and Windjammers too, the 3 they're releasing have been released to death!

I'd like some Shock Troopers 1 & 2 love please (Mercs ripoffs).

Seeing as i've already got the Metal Slug Anthology there isn't much on the Neo-Geo platform I really need....but there are heaps of shmups such as Pulstar, Blazing Stars, Prehistoric Isle 1 & 2, Last Resort etc that I wouldn't mind getting for collection's sake. I was never a huge fan of Neo-Geo shmups, mostly preferred the Capcom, Treasure and Atlas/Cave stuff but the quality is there so I guess it just comes down to personal preference.

aussie-nintendo forumer as reported OLFC has rated FF for Wii VC. So it can't be far about. We got the Turbogfx games so I think we'll get the Neo-Geo games here.

Still not happy about the pricing though.

Excellent! As far as pricing goes, the NeoGeo has always had an elitist to pricing. Its no surprise to see that their VC range is no exception. Im happy to pay it myself.
