Despite being a pretty straightforward and definitive statement, the devil was apparently in the detail - subsequent to the largely unhappy reactions online, RedOctane has since been in contact with 1UP to clarify exactly what Huang meant when he said there wouldn't be "online" for the Wii.
Apparently, by "online", Huang actually meant "downloadable content". While the 360 and the PlayStation 3 will offer additional downloadable content at a price yet to be announced, no such offering will be available at launch for the Wii. The lack of large amounts of internal storage and the relative immaturity of WiiWare may make a similar offering somewhat difficult on the Wii. However, while RedOctane is continuing to work with Nintendo to try and make a common offering across all next-gen platforms, nothing will be available at launch.
On a much happier note, RedOctane also specifically clarified that the Wii will offer online competitive play out of the box, news that is likely to make Wii owners much happier.
