Mario Kart Wii to feature 16 player online mode

Wii News | Now how about that other Nintendo game?
N-Europe is reporting that the latest official Nintendo Magazine reveals a small few details on the upcoming Mario Kart Wii.

According to the website the game will feature 16 player online battles. Those days of playing with your friends on the one television screen will soon become a distant memory. Players will also be able to pull stunts in the air. It's not yet known whether this will bring about a speed boost or whether you'll need to pull stunts for any particular reason, but it's an interesting relevation anyway.

Also confirmed is the fact that all of the tracks on the Nintendo DS version of the game will also be available in Mario Kart Wii, as well as several brand new tracks.

UPDATE: It seems the Official Nintendo Magazine got a little bit excited, confirming today that the piece they ran was merely speculation.

Any indication if it will support splitscreen play online (so you and a friend splitscreen on your wii competing online with other players)? I really liked that Perfect Dark Zero let me do that icon_smile.gif

16 players online sounds sweet.

Doing tricks though? Sounds a bit too cheesy IMO especially for a Kart game.

The main aspect that truly made Mario Kart DS shine in my eyes was the fact that they included a ton of 'retro' tracks that people grew up playing through on past Mario Kart titles. It's good to see Nintendo are keeping up with this trend. I just hope that they remove the glaring exploit that made online play less fun in Mario Kart DS (or atleast have the option of choosing to play in games with or without said spammable feature for those that want a clean race).

Serious Nintendo, fix your **** up online. 16 players = good, but lets get a nice online interface first.

2 things:

1. Does that mean I'll have to enter at least 15 friend codes if I want to play online?

2. Does the last paragraph mean that the game will only have the ported tracks from the DS in addition to 3 new ones - and that's it?

Good thing to come out of this: Super Smash Bros online too.

They'll probably alter the friend code system, so you have to enter one friend code for each driver, and then an additional code for each axle on the vehicle they're driving.

I think it would be safe to say that Nintendo will be introducing a wealth of new tracks ontop of the regulars.

There better be loads of new tracks. But something like the DSs half new/half old would be nice.

I think the new FC system is through each of the Mii's isn't it now (as introduced in Strikers)?

Cause that makes the FC's easier

This sounds good, another reason to finally wipe the dust of my poor Wii.

Sounds good. I also want bot enabled battle modes like in Mario Kart DS. Had so much fun just doing that all day. icon_smile.gif

The single-player race idea on DS should make a come back as well.

omg, 16 players, that's a lot for a console online game.
This is quite a surprise, I can see Nintendo getting serious about online gaming.

Isn't strikers FC per Mii per game? I'm pretty sure that each Mii gets it's own friend code but every game will/has a separate codes for each Mii. That feature was never intended to use the same FC for other games later on (for each Mii) as far as it's been made known - just so multiple people on one Wii could have separate online FC's and rankings. Don't get your hopes up either! Regardless of all that until FCs are done outside of the game's (eg. within the Wii's OS) they are always going to be average->horrible to use.

Regardless - great news! As long as they keep 4-player split in. 4-player split will ALWAYS > online for Nintendo multiplayer games. Can't beat having your friends, drinks, and a party.

You'd have to say, that as like MK DS, it would be connecting to randoms to fill a game. I mean, that could be good...but I'm not going to wait for 30 minutes to play a game, while it waits. It takes that to load a game against ONE person in Strikers, let alone 16!

This is awesome newbs, but I'm expecting something to fall down here.

Wow, this is awesome news! I don't have a Wii, nor do I plan to get one but Mario Kart Wii with 16 players online would be absolutely brilliant. Finally, this might bring about more real online Wii games.

Same tracks as DS? Is there interconnectivity? Thats would be good but bloody hell, more recycling from Nintendo. For of the same.

Update: ONM recently released an announcement that would surely anger fans. ONM stated that even though they didn't say it was speculation or they were making it up misleading many readers and it looked like a fact, the details they gave is what they wanted to see in the game. The statement they gave is below.

“The details printed in Official Nintendo Magazine 21 regarding Mario Kart Wii were healthy speculation on our part and are in no way an official announcement from Nintendo. We are sorry if we have mislead anyone. We do not set out to mislead our readers. ONM apologises profusely for any misunderstandings that this has caused.” - ONM
Boo. Hopefully its just them covering their tracks after revealing what wasn't supposed to be revealed, though.

If this online speculation ends up being true I would be very surprised.

This should be good fun. I hope Nintendo do make a better online service, rather than these horrendous friend codes. Had a release date been confirmed for this? I want to be playing this asap.
