Worms franchise coming to the Wii

Wii News | The invertebrate combat continues.
THQ has announced the latest of their long running turn-based strategy game series, Worms: A Space Oddity for the Nintendo Wii. While the game is still some way off (tentatively scheduled for release in late 2008), the pointer functionality of the Wii Remote would certainly suit the franchise, so it may be worth waiting for.

The Worms series has changed visual style a few times, seemingly settling on a Metal Slug inspired 'cartoon combat' look, but a new style is once again promised for Space Oddity - a 'classic Sci-fo' look according to the designers. Other features being touted by the publisher include enhanced customisation, a re-invented single-player mode, and the one thing the Wii library really needs - a party game mode.

While the Wii game is some way off, in the meantime Worms fanatics can take a look at Worms: Open Warfare 2 for the Nintendo DS and Sony PSP, to be released later this year.

Sounds awesome for Wii users. I myself love the 360 version, it's great fun with friends offline.

Please tell me this isn't one of those horrible 3D worms games.

This could be very interesting with the mote.Lobbing grenades and aiming bazooka shots with well timed flicks could be fun.

Hmm.

i am curious to see if they can make the aiming good on the wiimote, if they can do that well them ill probably get this one, most worms games are great, sure its the same thing but its still fun and thats what counts right?

IT will be in 2d, as Team 17 said that they were not planning any more 3d Worms Games.

I've had the chance to try out Worms Open Warfare 2 and was pretty impressed, so I'm hoping that the Wii game further perfects the 2d game, I've gone back to Worms World Party and Armageddon on the PC for a bit of a retro trip now icon_smile.gif

3D worms aren't that bad. I have a copy that works.

My copy of Worms DC is a bit tempramental though, and though Worms DS is alluring, its much easier for me to gather a group of friends round 1 screen with 1 copy of the game. I'd love a home console rework.

I don't mind 3D Worms either, and could see the Wiimote helping it quite a bit.

Can I have a source for that, please? icon_smile.gif
(plusses await you)

Either way, the game should work pretty well with the Wiimote. Selecting target locations will be pretty fast and there are other actions that map well onto the Wiimote too. I just hope they don't go overboard...

I don't particularly like the 3D games, though, so I'm much more likely to buy it if it is indeed a good 2D entry into the series.

Couldn't find the reference that I had read, though I recall it being in an interview with Team 17 about the future of the series somewhere after Worms 4 and before the XBLA release.

Apparantly though THQ confirmed that the Wii title will in fact be in 2d. Yay!
