Wii almost UK's top seller

Wii News | Gaining on 360 fast.
Nintendo's UK dominance knows no ends. First we saw the DS become the UK top seller, beating all next-gen platforms. Then we saw Nintendo fill seven of the top ten games.

Now, Eurogamer reports that according to Chart-Track, Nintendo is likely to have sold a million Wiis in the UK within the next three to four weeks. The milestone is a significant one, as it represents the total GameCube sales achieved in the UK over the console's entire lifetime.

The Wii is apparently outselling the 360 by a ratio of around four to one and the PlayStation 3 by a ratio of more than six to one. If current sales rates continue unabated, the Wii is likely to overtake Microsoft's total UK 360 sales by around October, making it the most popular console in the UK by sales. Nintendo has apparently already achieved around 4 million DS sales in the UK alone.

However, Nintendo's up for some stiff competition over the next few months. With BioShock imminent, Mass Effect just around the corner, and the market dominating Halo 3 to follow, Microsoft's not exactly in an entirely weak position. On the other hand, Nintendo has almost sure-fire hits such as Super Mario Galaxy and Metroid Prime 3 and isn't afraid to use them.

Irrespective, that the Wii has been able to achieve such significant sales in such a short period of time is nothing short of astounding, especially from a console manufacturer that was just about written off in the public's opinion last generation. If Nintendo's success continues globally, it's only a matter of time before an official announcement is made claiming the Wii is the world's most popular console.

I don't think Nintendo even knew how quick these things will sell.

that would explain the massive stock shortages we've been seeing (unless you believe the consiracy theory)

Funny how when it came to last year, Nintendo seemed dead and gone, then then E306 came and everything changed. The Wii got released and its exceeded everyones expectations (which were high on their own post E3) as far as popularity goes.

But i don't understand. There are no good games for the wii. I bought a wii, and now it basically sits there lifeless except for an blue flashing light telling me to update every 2-3 months. I don't understand how gamers can find the wii games exciting. They are good for about 10 minutes until the gimick of motion sensing wears off. I would hate to see what sort of sales the wii will have when some decent games actually get released.

I thoroughly disagree. I think gamers have games to enjoy on the Wii, especially compared to the PS3. Xbox360 has a far better and more varied selection of games right now though, agreed.

Nintendo have, put simply, played smarter than the opposition this generation and it's pretty funny to watch Sony and Microsoft scrambling in the face of it.

You need to read the sentence properly:

I think if the Wii wins this war though it will definately take over the PS2 sales. Mainly because the Wii can go so dirt cheap from the beginning as it is.
