Now, Eurogamer reports that according to Chart-Track, Nintendo is likely to have sold a million Wiis in the UK within the next three to four weeks. The milestone is a significant one, as it represents the total GameCube sales achieved in the UK over the console's entire lifetime.
The Wii is apparently outselling the 360 by a ratio of around four to one and the PlayStation 3 by a ratio of more than six to one. If current sales rates continue unabated, the Wii is likely to overtake Microsoft's total UK 360 sales by around October, making it the most popular console in the UK by sales. Nintendo has apparently already achieved around 4 million DS sales in the UK alone.
However, Nintendo's up for some stiff competition over the next few months. With BioShock imminent, Mass Effect just around the corner, and the market dominating Halo 3 to follow, Microsoft's not exactly in an entirely weak position. On the other hand, Nintendo has almost sure-fire hits such as Super Mario Galaxy and Metroid Prime 3 and isn't afraid to use them.
Irrespective, that the Wii has been able to achieve such significant sales in such a short period of time is nothing short of astounding, especially from a console manufacturer that was just about written off in the public's opinion last generation. If Nintendo's success continues globally, it's only a matter of time before an official announcement is made claiming the Wii is the world's most popular console.
