More evidence Sonic will appear in Smash Bros?

Wii Rumour | Two separate retail promotions jump to conclusions.
Ever since it was announced that Snake from Metal Gear Solid would appear in Super Smash Bros Brawl, speculation has run rampant that other third party game characters could be added to the series' large stable of otherwise Nintendo developed personalities. And top of that list is arguably the second most famous character in videogame history, Sonic the Hegehog. While information dribbles out daily from the game's official website, the Sonic speculation has become something of a running joke, including a number of posts on the game's PALGN thread. At this point there's been so much speculation, and Sonic seems such an obvious choice, that it seems many people will be bitterly disappointed if the blue furball does not make an appearance in the game, despite never having been announced.

But it's not just forum dwellers' baseless speculation - faceless multinationals want a piece of this rumour pie as well. Kotaku reports that Sonic has appeared on a promotional voucher for the game, put out by retail giant Best Buy. While it's obviously a crude photoshop designed to drive pre-orders, other retailers have also promoted the game with images of Sonic - a pre-order image used by EB games has Sonic appearing in a slightly better photoshop attempt, although it should be noted that this particular mock-up is otherwise well researched, character wise.

Whatever the truth, it's likely PAL gamers will be left crying into their copies of Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games this year, as Super Smash Bros Brawl has been confirmed as a 2008 title for Europe, and most likely Australia.

I can see the pixels. >_>

I'm not too fussed about Sonic being in it personally, and I'm a crazy SEGA fan. I'm happy with Metaknight.

However, Nintendo might respond to this. If anything, it's baiting Nintendo to do something about this.

Knuckles I'd rather, mind you. He seems more...Brawly.

Sonic, Knuckles and Tails all need to be in, along with Megaman and Zero.

Why wouldn't they include the Sega characters? You'd think theyd have a much clsoer relationship with Sega over Konami, and with the Olympic Games game coming, I can't see any way they WON'T make it.

Now I wish I didn't sell my Wii.

well at least sonic wont suck in this game, just hope the kiddies remember him as a hero/icon for sega instead of a washout in a nintendo game.

I'm one of the few people who don't think that Sonic would make a good Brawl character - or, more to the point, that there are so many other gaming characters out there that would be better suited to a place in the roster.

That said, I think that a Sonic stage has massive damage potential.

I think Sonic could make a good character. I mean if Pokémon Trainer can make a viable character, I don't see why Sonic can't. I doubt he'll appear though. Possible moveset:
^+B: same as using the electric shield from Sonic 3, giving an extra boost to aerial recovery. Pulls in opponents and does some damage, not exceeding Mario's ^+B.
B: Spin attack, launches Sonic toward a nearby opponent in air, on ground sends Sonic spinning along the ground (requires charging/tapping for more power/distance).
>+B: Throw a random Chao at opponent, similar to Peach's Vegetable Throw.
v+B: Change to Tails (^+B would change to a flying attack, jump would have similar horizontal recovery to Jigglypuff/Kirby).
Final Smash: Turn Super Sonic, would be controlled like Ness' PK Thunder (^+B), flies around screen doing damage to whatever he hits.

Knuckles could be a clone with gliding jumps that damage with fists, ^+B could change to that Shoryuken he had in Sonic Advance (2?). Still with Tails as a partner. Maybe the Final Smash should change reflecting Knuckles' allegiance with Robotnik; Robotnik comes on screen in the classic ship with wrecking ball and swings it at the stage in an arc a couple of times, before blowing up, falling onto a platform and running off the stage.

Megaman would be v.similar to Samus. Zero would be more like Zero-Suit Samus. Although Megaman has the most potential to differ, if you factor in Rush. Only problem being I doubt they'd go for Megaman over X, seeing as he's way more popular. I doubt they'd use any of the other characters from the newer series, not as iconic.

Edit: I agree tootie_kicks (see below), I just copy and pasted an old moveset I had worked out for Sonic. Should have changed it to Sonic/Tails/Knuckles in one character.

Seeing as the Pokemon trainer has been released as 'three characters', why not do the same for Sonic, Knuckles and Tails? It wouldn't be that much different, just having the other two in the background, or coming in from offscreen, or something similar.

You've sold me on Sonic as a character with that thought alone - Tossing Chao's at people would be awesome icon_biggrin.gif

I'd love to see Sonic in Brawl. Mario vs Sonic. Awesome.

There there Jimmy, you can come over and use it when Brawl releases here... next year. *cries*

Throwing Chaos better be in the Olympic games series.

I'd love to see a Green Zone stage, much like the old school Mushroom Kingdom stages.

Question is, what would all the Chaos do? As in, which one would do what effect?

While obviously photoshopped as the article points out, you have to wonder why was this done in the first place? Retailers know something we don't, but they're not supposed to let it out yet? Do retailers ever get such information?
