Wii firmware updated

Wii News | Now featuring a clock.
Nintendo has updated the firmware for the Wii to version 3. The changes aren't exactly radical changes but should be rather noticable. Nintendo has posted a list of changes on their website with the most notable change being the fact you can now see the time on the Wii menu.

The full list of changes are as follows:

Wii Menu:
The weather forecast will now be displayed on the Forecast Channel icon in the Wii Menu.
Headline news will now be displayed on the News Channel icon in the Wii Menu.
The current time will now be displayed in the Wii Menu.
The area around the Wii Message Board button will now flash when a message arrives..

Wii Message Board:
You're now able to rearrange the order of your Wii Friends in the address book.
You're now able to go into the Wii Friends registration screen by pressing the A Button on a blank spot in the address book.
Envelope message icons will now appear on the calendar only on the dates when a message is received.
Your message sending history will now be displayed in Today's Accomplishments.
You can now scroll the message text by pressing the B button on the message screen.

Wii Shop Channel:
The search function on Virtual Console has been enhanced.

I love the fact that new systems can update and improve functionality, however the Wii's updating is a little bit behind the updating features offered by the other 2 systems, especially XBOX360.
Why can't Nintendo release a patch which enables people to group together different channels? How's about making your own 'group' channel and putting things in it. I would LOVE to make a NES channel, SNES channel, etc and then put all my games in there as opposed to scrolling through screens of channels to find the game I want to play..

^ I don't think you will ever see the kind of dashboard update/support as the 360/PS3.

That is a really good idea, so take heed Nintendo (we all know you monitor us for ideas and feedback... always watching... you perverts!). I got sick of trying to arrange all my channels/games into a pleasing formation - especially after buying a new game.

Nice update with the news/weather being updated and shown on the channel icons though, I dig that.

I've been complaining about a lack of a clock on the main screen pretty much as soon as I got the Wii, so this is welcome. Does anyone know if the clock appears when you press the home button (on that menu screen)?

I'd really like to see a central friends list. That's what the Wii needs. It had had a global central friends list then the friends code would be bareable.

I’ve downloaded all 3 updates, got the clock, Weather channel is updated, but I can’t access the Shop and News channel. There is an error saying basically the net’s not working. But every other channels (Mii, Internet, Voting) work. I’ve read across the net about people with this dilemma. Anyone else with this problem?

beat me to it.
that's exactly what i've been saying since... well, i got a few VC games.

that, or simply the option to re-arrange channels as you se fit, rather than first in, first on.

You can. Hold B, then press A and you can drag the channels around and re-arrange them as you like.

well... don't i feel dumb? icon_rolleyes.gif

thanks for that, it's exactly what i wanted - organised all my downloaded VC titles by original platform now.

Despite not mentioning it for some reason, the big update here is actually usb keyboard support for the message board. Not the internet channel, but its a start.

Baby steps, Nintendo.

Apparently the freeloader that was compatible with wii is now not compatible with wii.

Haha that's funny people didn't know about rearranging channels (same as picking up Mii's etc). It's in the manual.....might wanna have a read....maybe there are a couple of other functions you might not know about.

Hey joejoe....it's probably having trouble accessing the Shop Channel because of the download speed you currently have. My Shop channel doesn't work if my cable is shaped/capped but all other times it's fine.

Oh and Obs....when I told you my wireless router was a Datalink I lied....I checked and it's actually a Belkin and those problems I was having connecting to the shoop channel was all because my connection was shaped.

I reckon a retro channel which loops demo's or playthroughs of various(newly released) vc games games would be sweet.

Only just found out about this update now, sounds nice and will update soon
They are all very welcome changes to me icon_biggrin.gif (as i don't have any NTSC games, it doesn't bother me much that i can't use freeloader, i'll use that on my cube instead)

But Q: in what particular way is the VC search function enhanced?
anyone know

My net's fine, I got through once yesterday after the update though, but that time Nintendo's server themselves were down. I can't win.

The update to firmware 3 has also changed the behaviour of the throbber... On loading a disc, it flashes on the way in or out, and when a message is recieved, instead of just the fade, now it flashes after fading on...

icon_mad.gif At least you can look on the internet on your Wii. Man, the 360 could really use that...

It seems I can't access the shop and news because the latest update messed up connection (the wired LAN adaptor) with the Wii's MAC address for these channels (as he rest works fine), with my detective skills I found this

Lucky for me it seems Nintendo are fixing this with another firmware update soon.

Sorry for the double post but Whala Nintendo put up a firmware patch to download, now I can access the shop and news channel. Yay!
