LEGO Indiana Jones announced

Wii News | Lego boulder included.
LucasArts have revealed at Comic-Con 2007 in San Diego that they'll be publishing yet another LEGO game from Traveller's Tales. This time though, instead of wielding a lightsabre, players can look forward to cracking a whip in LEGO Indiana Jones: The Videogame.

At this stage all that's known about the game is that it will follow the first three Indiana Jones films and while it has yet to be confirmed, we're willing to bet it will be released on the Wii, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Currently, Traveller's Tales are working on LEGO Star Wars: The Complete Saga which is due out in September this year and LEGO Batman: The Videogame which is expected to release next year. We'll report back once more information becomes available.

While I see your point, I believe that one of the big reasons behind why these games are so popular is the humor. There's just something very entertaining/amusing about watching a Lego version of one of your favourite movie characters walking around and imitating the "real" thing. The way that Lego moves can also be quite funny. It's kind of tricky to explain. I agree that it's just a fad, but it's certainly one with reason, imo.
Yes.. they have appeal. They open many doors in terms of style, they aren't as dark as their film counterparts (in the case of the later Star Wars films and the LEGO spinoff games) and because they merely represent Star Wars characters rather than actually be Star Wars characters (like the official movie of the game) it leaves room to be funny and satirical.

But what we can't have is a LEGO spinoff of every major movie that gets released. I know there was a Harry Potter LEGO Creator some years ago, so even that got the LEGO treatment.

So, does this mean they are releasing actual Indy lego... or have they already?

No, i haven't played it, but........for the point i'm making, why should i need too? It's the whole concept.
that's the issue i have with the whinge though.

i never really got the point of the actual SW based Lego (or many of the other lego kits based on films. i'd rather have a proper model for SW) and i'll be the first to admit that when i heard about the game, hell, when i saw the first screenshots of Lego Star Wars, it was very much a case of "WTF are they smoking?"

but then i got a demo of the game, and it just works.
it's almost as if the developers thought the same thing when they were given their creative mandate on the game, but instead of making it a serious game, they've pretty much made a game that's reminiscent of how kids play with toys based on film events, rather than the ways films events happen.

it probably would've failed miserably if it had been a serious game, but for lack of a better description, it's almost as if it had been made by the Lucasarts designers of old: the people behind "Sam and Max", "Day of the Tentacle" or "Monkey Island".

as for Lego Batman and now Lego IJ, i don't know how they'll turn out. perhaps the fad is over, perhaps the magic has gone, perhaps, the films simply aren't suited for the Lego treatment. this last is actually my biggest concern, i'm not really sure how they'll translate into the Lego environment, i personally think franchises like Transformers, The Matrix, Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings would better suited to the Lego Games than Batman or Indy, unless they change the formula behind LSW when applying it to LBM and LIJ.

i don't think that the LSW were the best games of the century, i don't think they're even top ten of the year material, they're just good little diversions from the serious games, and even better, they're budget games. something i seriously hope hasn't gone to the developer's (or more correctly, the distributor's) heads when it comes time to price the next few.

will i be pre-ordering?
no, but i will be looking to see how they turn out.

anyway, the Lego Star Wars 1 PC demo can be downloaded here.

i also 100% agree with the SW Transformers. that is clearly one of the worst cross-over cash-ins i had seen in a long time. i'd love to know if they actually sold many units, whether people were simply that stupid that they just snapped them up because they had the SW or Transformers logo on them.

Those SW transformers used to be vaguely hard to find - now they seem to be in toy shops everywhere. I guess they figured they'd make some sales with the new Transformers craze, but it seems weird to suddenly re-release them here like that.

Let me get this right...

There are star wars transformers?! icon_eek.gif :O

If that is what I am reading...well..I don't know what to say.

^ yeah, check the link Jibbs posted.
(well, here it is again: http://www.starwars.com/collecting/news/hasbro/news20051107.html )

they are truly as awful as they might sound.

EDIT: bleh, the link borked because it was trying to add the ")" to the URL.

Actually as silly as they are the Darth Vader to tie advanced looks pretty cool and seemless although I could imagine the transformation is very basic.
But seriously robot versions of Obi Wan Kenobi and Luke Skywalker.Darth Vader I could see seeing he is pretty much an android but geez..they're stretching it a bit with the others.

Btw that link doesn't work Obs, i used Jibbs link.Ta anyways I must have missed the link before.

Oh, i thought it was more a rhetorical question, i thought the main point of your post was to highlight how much i whinge, rather then if i had actually played the game or not.

No, i haven't played it, but........for the point i'm making, why should i need too? It's the whole concept. Why can't they simply make the game a star wars/indy whatever themed game and just leave it be.Why make the characters, the landscape, everything about the game be lego?Where are the pros to being lego, besides the 'oh cool, it's lego' first time reaction factor?Making a game based on lego severely limits the creative freedom the whole team has when making the game. Not only do you restrict the games graphics immensely(low poly characters with poor texturing with low poly settings with poor texturing) but it will start to get a bit samey, a bit old hat.Running around as a lego skywalker doing lego things, will, if you blur your eyes just slightly, look just like lego indy doing lego things.

It's retarded. It's a video game fad.'Oh, we've milked the lego thing, let's go and redo movie franchises, but mix it with transformers this time, and milk the s*** out of that too.Oh wait, too late.

Movie franchise+lego=success? When the f*** did that happen?I'd rather movie franchise+faithful recreation of movie+great graphics+great gameplay+all that other crap that makes a good game=success. It's a fad, i don't like fads, i'm quite the anti-fad.But whatever, ride your razor scooters and play your <insert movie name here> LEGO game.

Btw, i don't whinge without good reason, i whinge, ok, i'll give you that, but i'm no whingy b***h.
uHH...i think Jibbs might've stolen that post from me. icon_razz.gif

Personally I agree with ALL the above and I think 'LEGO' based games are just being 'kidified' in other words....made accessible to kiddies. Most kids like Lego but not every kid might like Indiana Jones, Star Wars etc....so these movies/characters/settings are given the lego treament to 'cash-in'. Yes that's right....it's not because it allows for different avenues/techniques to flesh out these movies/characters/settings even more.....it because you market something towards kids and it becomes a hit then you'll quite literally be rolling in it!

So in summary....these are just cash-in type games and like Jibbs said...they're a fad.....disposable product that once it's worn thin will just dissapear without even a whimper and no-one will care.

I'm not into 'kiddy' stuff, therefore these games do nothing for me! Infact they come off as very tedious and a chore because your're running around pressing the same two buttons the whole game with no strategy, no challenge, no nothing....just point A to point B with the bare minimum of everything else thrown in. The only difference with the Lego games is that they are quite solid but this still doesn't change the fact that they bore me to tears.

I agree with most of Ob's last big post it's just that I didn't enjoy the games but I definately see how people would if they just want something a little bit simple with some decent slapstick humour thrown in.

Cool, ugh agrees with me, it's better to have ugh as an ally then an enemy icon_wink.gif

Where else did you post about the whole lego thing sucking?
i wasn't trying to make anyone an enemy, was just wondering if you'd played it, since in the thread you linked, you hadn't. (the whinging thing was supposed to be sarcastic, but ah well.)

i will also concede that (imo) there wasn't really anything calling me back to the games once i passed the main campaigns. there are a lot of incidental things to do, (collecting coins and kit pieces within the levels and so on) but by-and-large, these kind of things don't interest me in most games, and LSW is no exception.

i'm also not saying they AREN'T a fad, but given there are only 2 titles out at present (both SW titles), i'm more interested in seeing how the format evolves with Lego Batman, before i call it anything.

Heh, i'm not taking any of this personally, and i know no-one is 'going' one another, but it's always good to be on the side ugh is on.

You ever tried arguing against ugh?Jesus, you'd wanna have gone to the toilet before hand, it never ends.

Is this not true for all movie games, though? So rather than releasing Star Wars #437 for a quick buck, they release Star Wars-lite for, once again, a quick buck. I don't really see the difference.

I thought the trailer was good until they go 'in LEGO!!11'

Although the game itself didn't look too bad, very similar to LEGO Star Wars. And it looks like its going to be a mild parody of the films.. so maybe it'll turn out alright.

Not really there are the Knights of the Old Republic games which use the Star Wars licence but they're hardly made to make a quick buck....a long buck maybe?

I'm just fvcking with you ugh, what i said before was in more of a ribbing sort of way, not downing you.

LEGO games are soooo fun!! I think they should make LEGO spinoffs of every big movie, well not every big movie because that would mean X-Men (which would actually be kool), Spider-Man, Shrek, Lord of the Rings and even Saw lol. Though George Lucas directed movies can only pull it off, he makes them so adventurous, LEGO Indiana Jones should be really fun, LEGO Batman should also be really kool too well if you get to play as the villains...
