Paper Mario hits the Virtual Console

Wii News | Aussies get it first.
It may be E3 but it seems somebody at Nintendo Australia stayed behind to flick the switch on several new games for the Virtual Console.

The Virtual Console has been updated with one Nintendo 64 title and three Turbografx-16 titles. Paper Mario is now available and costs 1000 points, Chew Man Fu, Double Dungeons and New Adventure Island are also all available now and cost 600 points. Paper Mario was the very last title released for the Nintendo 64 and is a tough game to find online, so at 1000 points it is very good value.

Can anyone who's got it fill us in on the port? Hell anyone who had the original probably can. Is it full of PAL-slowdown and borders? I do expect it is but i'd LOVE to hear otherwise.
All N64 games have been converted well on VC. None have borders. All have better framerates and vastly increased resolution. And Paper Mario was converted well originally. So there's very little chance this will be done badly.

Basically only Mega Drive and 3rd party NES games have the PAL conversion problem on VC, everything else is fine.
PAL game running in a perfect emulation is still a PAL game. I wouldn't buy this until it was tested. Although it's not 3d so I'd say the PAL port was pretty well done.

What does that mean? Mario 64 PAL was slow and bordered, but on VC it's fast and has no borders. F-Zero X PAL on N64 ran at full speed and full screen, and the VC version does too. Both had different PAL conversions (bad, then excellent respectively), but both are now ideal on VC.

*bangs head on keyboard*

Why does the shop not load??? It does this every friggin' time!!! It's the only thing that uses that internet that doesn't work every single time!!!

It just sits there, loading, taunting me that I'm completely dependant on it to get Paper Mario...

Just you wait *glares* you are now my nemisis...

^ that happens to me 9 times out of 10 too.
i need to clear the settings, then re-input them again and it's fine.

it's really irritating, and it's only an issue for the shop, the other online channels work fine.

Can someone PLEASE comment on the actual game? I never knew about this game (altho I had (still have) an N64) and have no idea what its actually like. People say "it's fun" and that's it.
Anything a little more concrete? Please?

Its an RPG-lite, so to speak, with Mario. And a bunch of humour.

Hrmmm, I want to play this but wondering if playing this game it will ruin my Wii Paper Mario experience?
uMM hELL nO!!! If anything it will improve your experience with the wii version because you'll be able to appreciate all the upgrades/improvements.

Honestly man if there was 1 game that holds up on the N64 after all these years it's Paper Mario!

PAPER MARIO GET!!
Thats something we can definitally agree on Ugh, Paper Mario is truly a title that can stand the test of time.

I advise everyone to get this, and try and track down the cube one as well.

If I hadn't already bought the N64 cartridge of this a few years ago for $125 from that Retro shop that used to be on Broadway, Sydney, I'd have snapped it up automatically.

Mind you, if the Virtual Console version is fullscreen & fullspeed, it might be worth downloading.

Excellent news, I thought the day would never come! Very good move by Nintendo. Now, if they'd just released Super Mario RPG.. icon_smile.gif [/dreaming]

Seriously think you need to check out OoT on PAL VC. Although true about Mario 64, it does seem to run very well.

Yea Retro Games, my mate owns that shop. He has a couple of more copies on N64 the last I saw, I think one was in perfect condition...no worn down edges on the box (which is quite rare).

Freakin hell, 125 for a cartridge, i payed 110 for mine complete, mint as mint can be, minty fresh, peppermint crisp....and so on.

Downloaded this last night. Still as totally sweet as I remember it.

It's fullscreen, not sure about the speed, though. Only other issue I've seen pop up is some occasional polygon tearing, but I imagine that's a by product of the resolution scaling. Does this normally happen with upscaled 64 games?

That's actually the problem I got last night and i've never had it before! I thought it was cuz I hadn't used my wii in months and it just got all sooky with me and didn't want me going to the wii store (although all other channels were working fine and instantaneous). Just before I was gonna go to bed I was gonna try deleting my connection settings and try it again (I knew to try this because i've done it on my DS with Animal Crossing before and it fixed a similar type of problem) but I couldn't be bothered. Atleast I know it'll work when I try it next.

Do you use a router? It could be that if you don't have WiiConnect24 on, the Wii can get assigned a dynamic IP, and that sometimes causes my router to chuck a hissy fit. Same deal with my DS. Both are on a static IP now and it's mostly good.

Then again, that doesn't explain why you're getting all the other channels just fine. icon_neutral.gif

Nice to see Nintendo are releasing this on VC considering there wasn't that many games of the original game in Australia. But I'm still waiting in hope they will release Super Mario RPG on VC.

I'm honestly not too sure but it hasn't been a problem before and like I said every other channel (news, internet, weather) were working fine and they would come on straight away.

All I know is that it's not my router, it's been fine before, it works fine for my Ps3 and infact it works fine for the wii it's just the Shop Channel. I did a connection test on the Wii and that was ok aswell. I also have Wiiconnect24 enabled and it's updated my console numerous times while it's been off so again it's an isolated problem that is a fault of Nintendo.

Like Ugh's, mine is only an issue for the Shopping Channel - WiiConnect has updated, received messages and all sorts fine, News, Weather and Votes all update perfect, it's just WiiShop.

my router is almost dead though - i've needed one for quite some time, so i'm not really too concerned. just sharing the fix i've come across.

@Ugh:
you don't happen to have a D-Link router, do you?
i keep hearing that they are only semi-compatible with Nintendo products, and this is the brand i have.

Yea mine is a D-Link aswell (about 1 year old) and that explains a lot actually, but D-Link is a very popular brand so someone is extra crap (either Nintendo or D-Link) for it not being 100% compatiable.

Also it's only ever done this last Sunday....it's previosuly been working perfectly (I only noticed a couple of niggles with the DS-Lite but never the Wii) and I recently had my connection shaped (downloading all the videos of E3 on the other 2 consoles) so I thought it might have something to do with that and maybe because Paper Mario got release so many people were on the store and Nintendo's servers couldn't cope.

Anyways i'm not too worried cuz i'll try again when my speed restriction is taken off.

Surely that's it? I have problems with all non-PC online apps when my downloads run out and I'm shaped to 64k. The problem is the way they shape your bandwidth is by turning it on and off constantly, and secure servers don't like it.

^ yEa personally I think it's that aswell because I rarely get my connection slowed down (I barely use the internet at home...one of the only reasons it exists at home is just for the convenience of internet and to get my consoles online of course) so it's not something I would've experienced before.

The funny thing is everything else works almost perfectly (like it would if my connection had not been shaped) e.g. Ps3 store comes up straight away, all other channels on Wii come up straight away, online gameplay doesn't seem affected....the only thing it seems to actually affect are the downloads speeds and now the Wii Store Channel.

It's amazing how cable can be slowed down to dial-up speed, they should slow if down to adsl speed or something similar.
