E3 2007: Mario Kart Wii announced

Wii News | Global Q1 2008 release and compatible with new Wii Wheel.
Nintendo has announced the development of Mario Kart Wii during the company’s Pre-E3 conference.

The footage shown looked incredibly nice, and featured several courses from previous Mario Kart titles such as Double Dash!!, Mario Kart 64 and Mario Kart DS, with other courses from the remaining versions expected to be included also. Nintendo announced that there would be several new characters; though have yet to reveal the full cast of available characters.

The game will be released in Q1 2008 and will come bundled with a new Wii controller accessory called the Wii Wheel, allowing versatile movement to replicate a steering wheel. Reggie explained that the new control method would allow experienced and new Mario Kart gamers to race toe-to-toe. Mario Kart Wii will also include online modes, including an online 'Battle Mode'.

It's expected Nintendo will release more information during E3. Stay tuned.

As far as graphics are concerned I would rather look at Mario Kart DS.

Doesn't look too bad. Will pick this title up definetly. This wheel sounds interesting, although I'm sure there will be support for the Wii-remote only so friends can join in.

This looks cool and all, but a wheel? I'm going to have to buy storage for all the bloody Wii accessories/peripherals that I'm apparently going to end up with.
Still, as long as it doesn't bump up the cost of the game(s) then I'm good with it I guess.

Exactly what I was thinking, this, Guitar Hero Controllers x2, depending on what shooters come out, the zapper. So many accessories!

they said they would have lots of players per race but didnt give a number but i get the feeling its more then 8, maybe we will be seeing crazy 32 racer online races in the future

I don't see the need for the wheel prehpiral. Excite Truck didn't need it and the controls for it were fine. I have rarely used any of steering wheel controllers before but a lot of them appear to be mounted to something so the wheel is locked into place. This perphiral isn't mounted to anything. I wonder if that will cause it to feel less immersive.

The game itself looks great and Reggie did mention that several control methods would be in place so I would like to see the use of a GCN pad.

Doesn't look visually impressive at all. I really think since a competitive environment is emerging for Mario Kart games (DS WiFi Tours etc), Nintendo should focus on refining the racing element, especially if they want online play to become big.

yeah the game does look great, but isn't the wheel exactly what has been tried before? It didn't turn out that well did it?

Let's hope Nintendo are generous enough to incporporate ALL methods of control into this game ala Smash Bros. Brawl.

Ive never played a Mario Kart I didn't like. Looks like the Wii is really going to deliver

Ive never played the GBA or Gamecube versions. I dont know what to think about the whole two to a kart racing thing. Is it any good?

I wonder if they'll do anything to combat 'snaking' exploiters. The only reason I stopped playing Mario Kart DS online was because of all the douche bag snakers.

I can see that crowd migrate to the Wii if nothing is done to even the playing field.

And no Reggie, that wheel ain't gonna help. At all. Jeez

I agree. Exploits of any kind ruin the experience singlehandedly. Snaking is giving assclowns a golden platter.

Well I only saw grinding in the trailer so hopefully its the same as Double Dash ie: you can grind but it doesn't jump (so you can't snake as such).

Definitely picking this up. Looking forward to seeing how many can play online too!
