New Virtual Console titles released

Wii News | A huge update.
A few days ago we revealed that Hudson was releasing several Virtual Console titles for the Australian Virtual Console today; well true to their word they've added 11 Turbografx titles.

The following Turbografx titles are now available:
  • Bonk's Adventure
  • Bomberman'93
  • Super Star Soldier
  • Victory Run
  • Alien Crush
  • Military Madness
  • R-TYPE
  • Dungeon Explorer
  • Motoroader
  • Soldier Blade
  • VIGILANTE

All of the titles cost 600 points except for R-TYPE which is 800 points. If eleven titles isn't enough then you'll be pleased to know that three Mega Drive titles are also available: Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Ecco II: Tides of Time and Golden Axe II.

That's all well and good, but I'd really prefer they put more N64 games up...

The problem is that most of theese game are TurboGFX games and the current intrest levels for them are pretty low. Not a lot of people grew up playing these games so the nostaligc appeal is not there. Also the quality of the TurboGFX games is not at the level of other VC games. Hopefully the Australian VC will not be floaded with TurboGFX side scrolling shooters like in the US. With that said though I am interested in R-Type.

I would have purchased Sonic 2 and Golden Ax 2 but these are already on the PS2's Sega MegaDrive Collection as well as a slew of other games.

Appeal isn't the issue, he said quality.

And Bonk's Adventure, Bomberman, Super Star Soldier, Alien Crush, Military Madness, R-TYPE and Soldier Blade are great games. Especially Soldier Blade and R-type.

They really need a demo channel for the VC games. I don't really know anything about these games (well, expect for R-type).

The only problem there is, that some of these games are repetitive. Like if you had a demo released for SSBBrawl, now that would take alot of the thunder away from the actual game since SSBBrawl is repetitive.

Ironically, that's probabaly why Hudson didn't bother to release their games in Australia to begin with. The sales of the games rely a lot on nostalgia, at least as a selling point, and since the PC Engine was never released here there wouldn't be any nostalgia for it, apart from a few crazies like myself that imported the system.

And it costs them something like $500 to get each game rated by the OLFC, so they probabaly didn't think it was worth it, until they saw the sales figures and changed their mind.

^ It costs $180 per title to be rated by the OFLC

So why were they released in the UK and not Australia? Cause from everything I've heard, the Turbographix wasn't released there either, so it's suffer from those same problems, but the games where released there from the start.

Based on this page on the oflc website, it seems the lowest fee they offer is $470.00.

I never heard of it back in the day, but many claim the PC Engine got a very limited release in the UK. I have magazines from the mid 90s that claim it was never released there though (I was into the console and have a Japanese one), so if it was released it was very late anyway.

But they probabaly get released there because the population is higher, and the ratings are cheaper.

Didnt the Turbographix get a release under a different name in the UK?

In Japan it was known as the NEC PC-Engine.

This is a great thing to see! A mass release of titles. Nintendo should keep this up and use it as a strategy, rather than making up for the lack of TurboGrafX on Australian shores.

If you arent sure about a certain title, then look it up on the net. It's well worth it. Like the Neo-Geo AES, TurboGrafX is a lost gem. The titles are amongst the highest quality of the 16-Bit generation.

Sorta, IF it was released in the UK. It was called the TurboGrafx-16 in the US, and Turbografx (without the 16) in a very small release in mainland Europe. It was also called the PC Engine in Japan.

Fair enough. I haven't played some of thoose games. R-Type is on my Commodore 64, I probably should see if it still works.

Even in the US the numbers of sold TurboGFX sold wasn't an incredible amount. So even many US games still missed out on the console. I second downloadable previews/demo's for these VC games.
