Hudson to release eleven VC games this Friday in Australia

Wii News | TurboGrafx overload on July 6.
After it was revealed a short time ago that Hudson would finally release TurboGrafx games on the Australian Virtual console, the next question was how exactly Hudson would do this this. In the past, Australian VC updates had simply been the European update minus the TurboGrafx games, so would Hudson string out the games currently released in Europe, leaving Australia permanently six months behind the UK and Europe?

Well, it seems not, as Hudson has confirmed on their website that for this Friday's update, they will be releasing eleven games at once, a big step to helping Australia catch up. The titles, as listed, are:
  • Bonk's Adventure
  • Bomberman'93
  • Super Star Soldier
  • Victory Run
  • Alien Crush
  • Military Madness
  • R-TYPE
  • Dungeon Explorer
  • Motoroader
  • Soldier Blade
  • VIGILANTE
All titles cost 600 points, except for R-TYPE, which costs 800 points.

The TurboGrafx (named the TurboGrafx-16 in the US and the PC Engine in Japan) was a console created by Hudson and electronics manufacturer NEC and released in 1988. It was a direct competitor to Nintendo's NES and later the SNES and Sega's Mega Drive, and while it achieved success in Japan, it slowly tanked in America and only ever had an extremely limited PAL release.

Soldier Blade and R-type are excellent. Bonk's Adventure is pretty damn good for an NES level Platformer (although the sequel, already out in Europe, is twice as good). And I've heard Military Madness is a great Advance Wars style game.

So, can anyone shed light on just why R-Type costs more than the other titles? Just to be clear, 'Because R-Type is awesome, DUH!' is not a valid reason icon_razz.gif

It was a premium release when it came out originally. In Japan, the original R-type was actually split up into two full games called R-type I and R-type II, each at full price. For the US release, cart sizes had increased, but larger carts cost more, so they put it all together again at a premium price. (It was later re-released on Japan in CD form under the title 'R-type complete CD' with an enhanced soundtrack).

So on the Japan VC, you can still buy R-type I and II for 600 points each, and for the rest of the world it's 800 points for both. So it's actually cheaper this way.

Also, I don't see why PC Engine games should be cheaper then Mega Drive games myself, as the PC Engine was it's technical superior. So I'm just thankful they're cheaper in general to begin with.

Ah, cheers for that! Nice to know that we're not just being extorted for a good game icon_wink.gif

Thanks for the heads up David. It will be the perfect complement to Wonderboy in Monsterworld for the Megadrive!

Does anyone know if you can play Bomberman 4 player? (Looking at people who already have it)

You can apparently play it 5 player (not sure how exactly)? Either way, you can definitely play it 4 player (and much fun it is too).

4 Wiimotes/classic controllers and one gamecube controller if I remember rightly...

Yep. 5 player!

I got Bomberman '93 and Splatterhouse using the region swap trick. Thankfully no one will be forced to do that anymore.

Wow awesome all in one go eh? Could've been heaps cool but i've given up pumping money into the Wii, not untill they come up with a couple of solutions for it's shortcomings.

What I want to know is if the next Nintendo system will support the Wii and all these VC games? Obviously the Wii isn't going to last forever and the investment some people have made making it a bit of a retro machine would be quite substantial so it would be good to be able to continue this investment or carry it on to another generation....if so I might start buying the VC stuff again cuz I really don't want it to begin and end with the Wii.

Thankyou. And to David.

As for Ugh, currently the games can be put onto an SD card so they can be stored as memory on there. In that sense it could then be put onto the successor console to the Wii if Nintendo so chose to enable. Also, they would then have to eliminate the problem of ownership of games and consoles since currently the games cant be put onto other Wii consoles, and a re-download system would be slightly problematic for those with an extensive list of games.
