New Metroid Prime 3: Corruption shots

Wii News | Metroidy.
It's been over a year since that one single screenshot of Metroid Prime 3: Corruptions for the Nintendo Wii was released - during E3 2006, in fact. However, the kind folks of Nintendo have unveiled five brand spankin' new shots of the game in action, which will no doubt come as a great surprise to all you Metroid fans out there. And we know there's an awful lot of you.

It was only yesterday that Nintendo gave the game a US release date, so perhaps more information could be on the way soon. Fingers crossed, then.

How does that solve the control issue? Thats like saying GTA controls suck if you don't like it turn it off. Why can't they make it better?
what Karai said ^_^

Furthermore, isn't it unhealthy to play games for 8 hours straight? lol
take a break if its such a problem...

Now onto controls... if your arm gets tired from playing, turn the damn thing off. Or do more exercise.
Do more exercise?? You are aware that RSI or joint pain have nothing to do with muscle hypertrophy right??

Has anyone actually realised that the Wiimote is forcing the game to integrate strafing?? IMO this is exactly what it needs. The way it worked on the GCN played well but the ability to strafe is going to make this game feel so much more free.

I'm not trying to convince you of anything, you are not doubt biased and made up your mind a while back about anything in this discussion area.
How is hard to imagine someone being upset by this. You can sure as hell be sure that I am. Metroid 3 should be in HD glory but instead its stuck in a slight improvement of last gen graphics. Where's the fucking justice in that??

I don't get why people are STILL going on about wii graphics. They are shit compared to xbox360 and ps3, of course they are, but that is irrelevent. We all knew from day one wii would not have good graphics yet people keep complaining about it. Sure you can say wii games suck etc etc, a lot of people dont like them, but i don't see the point of complaining that the graphics are bad, because we all knew they would be, and the wii isnt capable of performing anywhere near the level of the 360, ps3 or any decent pc. Its like looking up at the sun each day expecting it to suddenly be blue, and being surprised when you notice its yellow....

Its nothing like that at all.

Its more like the Sun changing into more beautiful colours every five years, and when the color doesn't change you get majorily dissappointed because you are now going to be looking at the same god damn Sun for another 5 years.

All the while you could have been looking at a Sun with texture resolutions of 5076*5076 running at 720p.

C'mon, do your analogies properly guys. It's more like:

Every five years you get a new car, with the new one being more aerodynamic, faster, prettier, etc. When you next come to collect your new car you discover it's been made smaller, has had twin turbos installed. But they've removed the steering wheel and replaced it with a camera so you've got to control it by waving your hands about. icon_razz.gif

The screens look terrible but the trailer David posted is okay but it's not as excited as a cinematic trailer. Hopefully they post some screens that doesn't look like a PS2 game soon.

it still annoys me how the Wii is not a True Next Gen console in the graphics apartment since I am an artist, though I still cant wait to try this game, just got to play Metroid Prime 1 and 2 first icon_biggrin.gif.

im not fazed by the graphics at all

they're not as good as they could be on other hardware, but as long as they're not getting worse, then i dont have a problem

the game will be just as great in all its gamecube-esque glory as a much prettier version

i love it how this turned into an ugh vs everyone argument icon_razz.gif
i learnt long ago not to try and convince anyone about anything, it just drives them away

on topic though im not worried about graphics, never been a big thing to me it could look worse then metroid prime 1 and id still buy it and i would still love it, sure these shots dont look as shiny as some other games but its not like they are that bad, ive seen worse come out on this gen

I don't think I am going to bother judging on screenshots. Personally I thought the screenshots of Halo 3 were... well.. disappointing

I am going to hang around for some video before judging the graphics. Personally if they nail the controls (responsiveness, accuracy) I will be really happy (despite PC will always win for FPS icon_razz.gif )

OH NOES!!!!!!!!!!1111!!!!11

The resized 792x451 pics look crap! The game will definitely suck!

No point any of us judging until we are all actually playing the game - hopefully using a component connection on a nice widescreen TV.

If we look at the track record, a bad (or even an average) Metroid game has never been released. I have complete faith in this continuing to be the case. Looking forward to it.

Agreed, what they have done with the Metroid series is a lost art, making a franchise from 2D to 3D and actually being as good as their 2D counterparts.

Exactly what I was thinking, the shots have been scaled down slightly from 853*480, and this has served to make the jaggies far more noticeable making the images look far worse than they should.

Metroid always looked amazing in motion. But these shot look worse then those from September.

Those are some awful shots, but the videos back last year looked a country mile better than these. I'm gonna chalk it down to poor screen grabs, not in their native resolution.

A bit off topic here, but does the component connection make that big of a difference?? I tried it on a LCD with native res of 720p and it looked like, well, crud. That was for GoWII and Twilight Princess. icon_confused.gif
Haven't been able to try it on a tele with native res of 480p though (like those $1000 plasmas going around.)
You sure it was set to 480p? It should make a world of difference, I know upping the resolution to at least 720p makes just about every 360 game look twice as good.
Component vs. composite means no awful colour bleeding/crawling/whatever, more overall definition and (arguably) more importantly a progressive image. I'd say yes, a clear difference. And LCDs always look like crud anyway icon_wink.gif

Nope. icon_smile.gif I plugged it, booted it up and only noticed a difference in a fast moving cutscene which wasn't as blurred as through composite. Prolly was just the high native res of the LCD and the fact that their colour reproduction isn't that great to begin with.

Umm, I'm a little confused as to whether Samus will be able to strafe or not. I know that her crosshairs don't remain in the centre of the screen, but the pointer and nunchuck setup suggests she will have to strafe.

Anyone have any insight on this??

Unlike the actual game so far? Halo doesn't look any better in motion than in screenshot form- dissapointing.

Yes, it appears so, just like the excellent controls in CoD3, it's standard Timesplitters controls except with the pointer replacing the right analogue stick. There is also an option to lock the cursor in the middle of the screen (called 'expert' controls) for even more precision.

You could actually strafe in Prime 1 and 2 anyway, you just hold L or lock on to an enemy. But yeah, Prime 3 appears to have a dramatically different control scheme, and we'll have to see if that means a different gameplay emphasis.

Yeah, component is way better, but it's hard to say what to expect these days with so many different kinds of screens. On my high quality SD CRT component looks 200% better then composite, and on my screen 576i looks significantly better then 480p for most games. But many LCD screens can't handle interlaced signals very well and 480p will look better.

Actually, I believe 'Expert Controls' just ups the sensitivity, not reducing the size of the bounding box. From the last hands-on report I read though, it was a pretty good method of control. Metroid Prime games aren't traditional FPS, so you're not going to need pinpoint accuracy in a frantic gunfight, like you would in Red Steel.

Straying a bit off topic, but say I should get a widescreen monitor for my computer. What kind of equipment would I need to run a Wii in 480p on it?

An IGN hands-on ages ago said it made the bounding box smaller, but more recently I've spoken (on the internet) to someone who played it and they said there was a fixed crosshair option. True that it may not be as neccessary for Metroid then for standard FPSes, but even just the option is good, just to show what the set-up is capable of to a lot of people.

Just make sure the monitor can accept component inputs.

Although it would help if the monitor had a good scaling chip - many cheap LCDs have poor scalers, and that's why lower resolution inputs look bad on them, because they're scaled badly - like a blown up jpeg. A good scaler basically gives the image some anti-aliasing so it matches the monitor's set resolution properly.

But what I mean is, nintendo have said from day 1 that the wii would not be about graphics (i.e. that the graphics are shit) and every game that has come out does not have graphics anywhere near anything on 360 or ps3. If nintendo claimed their graphics were as good I could understand, but people are complaining about metroid 3 not looking good, when they knew, months ago, that there is no possible way it could look good. (Compared to what most modern technology can do). We know for a fact that the wii can not do good graphics, yet we are continuing to be surprised when each game comes out... it doesn't make sense.

Cheers. I'll pass on the Chimei model then.

holding the wiimote up to aim is actually a chore
What kind of lazy bastard says that wii controls are too much effort? did you never play duck hunt, or time crisis? Brilliant games that used a similar thing to this. Zelda on the wii would have been pretty boring if it hadn't been for the aiming of the bow and arrow. That single feature made me enjoy the game a little. If you want graphics, go and play your 360 and shut the hell up!
