Virtual Console updated

Wii News | A Mega Drive triple.
Regardless of the news that Virtual Console downloads are in decline, the Australian Wii Shop Channel has continued to crank out the classics. This week there are three new Sega Mega Drive titles available to Australians, while Europeans will receive a solitary Turbografx title.

The first title for Aussies is Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle, where titular character Alex sets off to the planet Paperock to free his long-lost father, King Thor. While the game is primarily a traditional side-scrolling platformer, you'll be playing a few games of rock, paper, scissors along the way as well.

The second title is Virtua Fighter 2, a revelation at the time of its arcade release, though the port over to the Mega Drive meant the game had to be converted from a 3D fighter to a 2D fighter. The final results were not too good, and still aren't after all these years.

The third and final title is Wonder Boy in Monster World, another traditional side-scrolling platformer from yesteryear. However, it does have a few RPG elements that include character interaction and weapon collection.

That's all for Aus this week, but Europe will be receiving Shockman, a side-scrolling action/shooter.

I wouldnt really call Wonderboy a platformer, but a true masterpiece none the less and quite frankly the best in the series (Dragons Trap comes VERY close second) A must have

VF2 on VC? Its bad enough it gets included with the Mega Drive collection. Amust avoid

Alex Kidd in the Enchanged Castle, worst in the series, but that doesn't make it a bad game, says more about his Master System outings. To each their own but majority of people on this site would have no doubt played it and have their own opinion.

I've been eyeing off the Wonderboy series for a while and this will probably be my first VC download...when I get a Wii of course icon_razz.gif

Wonderboy AND Alex Kidd?

Best!

i'm gonna have to recharge my points...

Dragon's Trap craps all over every other Wonderboy out there! So much depth compared and the graphics were unbelievable for it's time. Way more character and creativity than most games i've played my whole life! No way Monster World was better. I love Monster World though....it took over my life when it came out on the Megadrive....and funnily enough I didn't have a Megadrive nor did I actually get to play the game (could only afford the master system back then)...I used to daydream about all the adventures Wonderboy would be having in that game etc (although this happened with a lot of Megadrive games). I've finished Monster World and I have to say it was more of the same....so no way is it better than III....infact I would probably go so far as to say II is even better than Monster World because it was way more original for it's time.

In any case....awesome game....people should buy it if they haven't got it already. I've got it on megadrive so no need to buy the VC version. Also there is a Sega Ages Volume coming out that has all the Wonderboy games in one....so if you have a Ps2....that might be a better option.

Wonderboy 1 and Monster Land were side scrollers platformers, I dont even know what the hell Dragons Lair was. Dragons Trap and Monster Word were more Side scrolling RPG's than anything else, kind of like Zelda II... only... good.

I just got some more Wii points, it will officially fill my 3rd screen on the channels menu.

EDIT: Theres a broken link in the pointing to the "vc sales are in decline"

Yea Dragon's Lair was some crap shooter. Again I used to daydream what that game would be like but when I finally got my hands on it I was shocked it was so crap. It sux because it's called Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Lair and the best one is called Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap.....in other words I can see people getting confused and possibly calling Trap crap and that would be a crime!

Have you played Part II? It's just as much an RPG as Trap and World. The labyrinth at the end of that had me pulling my hair out when I was a kid (really devious) and then you have to fight this ultra hard boss! uGh!

I considered it a platformer with RPG elements due to it being more liniar, but I know what your talking about. That labrynth was not fair on kid, luckely my old man showed me though it icon_lol.gif . The boss, umm lets not go there icon_redface.gif

OI! icon_twisted.gif VF2 is an AWSOME game, just the Mega Drive port is awful awful.

Mind you I am glad they didn't try 3D on it (nightmares of 3D Ballz)

Very exciting stuff. Wonderboy in Monsterland for the Mastersystem was my fave Wonderboy when compared to The Dragon's Trap. Im not sure why. Ive never played the superior Megadrive version, but definately will now!

Its a shame Master System is not included on the Virtual Console list. Alex Kidd in Miracle World is a must own title.. aswell as tons of other Master System games. Psycho Fox anyone?

Same here dude. Not because it was a better game, I just had monsterland for a much longer time and was attached to it like nothing else.

That and Alex Kidd (who I always used to call 'Alex the Kidd'.)

You morph into different animals / creatures in Wonderboy III: The Dragon's Trap which takes place immediately after Wonderboy in Monsterland. I just played the Megadrive version on Virtual Console and its cool.. but the music and the character sprite just arent the same. The feel is different and I havent found a bag of money drop out of the air yet icon_sad.gif

Loved the Master System's music! Just awesome. The boss music too. They're playing in my head right as I type.

I still remember the last code for Miracle World where you have to run over the floor in a certain sequence or else the ghosts come out. Sad.. yet shows how much personal impact games back then had to what's out now.

^ Ah, since when do games out now not have an impact?? Sounds like you're confusing memories of times gone with gaming.

You and so many friends of mine, always Alex the Kidd.

I have since downloaded Monster World and brings back so many memories. I find it funny how they mention Wonderboy and Alex Kidd as headlining this weeks VC releases on the Wii Shop Channel but no mention of VF2 icon_lol.gif

You do know that Dragon's Trap is actually on the virtual console - the TG16 port (called Dragon's Curse without the Wonderboy name) is on the European VC. It's slightly upgraded from the Master system version with sharper graphics and sound, but it's exactly the same game.

Personal impact is what I was referring to. Games are great these days, dont get me wrong.. but I think the simplicity back then of games gave you more to remember.. more to cling to. Simple sprites and simple tunes = easy to remember and reminisce.

My father always referred to it as "Alex THE kid" and it always made me cranky - that and the stupid looking covers.

Umm OK what?? icon_think.gif I always heard of a game called Dragon's Curse but never paid much attention to it. The game is a Sega property how did they get it on the TurboGrafx? And how come it was never released on the Mega Drive?

EDIT: Dont worry I did some research seems that sega only had the rights to the NAME Wonderboy, which does explain Dragons Curse and the original Adventure Island

Wonderboy in Monsterworld is out!
that's great to hear, Doppel will finally be able to play it now

and he will rub it in my face that Sega IS better than Nintendo in this way and that, in no way do i dislike Sega these days, since the unveiling of VC

"God bless you Sherry Bobbins"
I mean "Virtual Console" icon_razz.gif

See at least I dont say Sega IS better than Nintendo, I just say Sega WAS better than Nintendo icon_lol.gif
