PS3 already being outsold in UK by Wii

Wii News | After only three weeks on market.
The Wii outsold the PlayStation 3 in the UK by approximately 8,000 units last week, according to figures leaked from Chart Track. In what was only its third week on sale in Blighty, the PS3 shifted 17,000 units, whereas the Wii managed 25,000 sales. Meanwhile, 11,000 Xbox 360 consoles were sold in the same period.

"Last week was Wii's third biggest sales week since launch," trumpeted a spokesperson for Nintendo UK. "Everything we are shipping, we are selling. Sales in previous weeks weren't as strong as 25k. More units are shipped some weeks than others. Easter was the catalyst for the spike in sales - it's a traditional gifting week and that was definitely a contributing factor, along with the fact that there was more stock than usual."

Both systems don't have much must have games. PS3 have a little more good games though.

Chris since you seem to have so many sales figures can you enlighten us with the total sales for PS3 to this point and compare them with the same launch period for the Wii and 360 in the UK? I realise this may cause you write an article that puts the PS3 in a positive light.

Who the **** is buying all those Wii's?? There can't be that many Ninty fanboys in the world and it doesn't have any good games to interest any general gamers.

Its those damn Yuppies.

Hmmm I'm not surprised that the ps3 sales have dropped there really isnt anything which are making people purchase this console. Deffinately keep an eye out once the market starts releasing better games for the ps3.

Otherwise I'll keep pondering whether to purchase a wii or not. (god brawl hurry up +_+)

So it is appearing in most markets Wii first, PS3 Second and 360 Third in the sales race over the last few weeks. That is how is playing out in US, Japan, UK and OZ.

The is to be expected. Even if Wii is no 1 I still will not buy it. I prefer better graphics, games such as GOW, GT5, F1 and GTA4 and XBL type service compared to the Wii experience plus the ability to play other media on my PS3 and XBOX360. It is going to be a interesting few years to see what Sony and Microsoft do to draw sales away from the Wii.

QFT.

I fail to see why this needs to be posted- of course you're going to suffer the couple of weeks after a record-breaking launch: most who wanted one got one at launch (partially because of great re-supplying). I'm surprised ANYONE buys consoles at this point; you'd think with the hype you'd either get one right when it comes out or months down the track.

Surprisingly I actually agree with that logically console sales should be lower right about now. What I don't agree with though is again people trying to make out as though PALGN is only posting anti-sony news. When the PS3 had an awesome launch they posted it and no-one complained, yet when they comment that it is losing momentum everyone jumps on and starts yelling, "YOU'RE ANTI-SONY!!!ONE!1"

The only time you'll see stories on sales figures is when the PS3 is being outsold, oh, and the emphasis will always be on the PS3, eg. "Wii outsells Ps3" not "Wii outsells PS3 & 360".

Heck even when the PS3 broke launch records in the UK this was the PALGN headline "PS3 sells well in the UK". 'Well'? 'Well'? That really sounds enthusiastic. It outsold the Wii by 60k and more than doubled xbox, there's a headline.

Wii market: mostly casual gamers, families and people who dont really play consoles are buying these en masse. I seriously know about five families who have bought one for entertainment, Nintendo has clearly reached its objective and at its price point, who would think it wouldnt. I just hope enough games come out for us Nintendo fans who are gamers, that bought it for Zelda/Metroid/Mario.

Its no surprise that PS3 isnt selling anywhere near as many, nor the 360, mosty people in the world dont have a clue what 1080p, 720p HD and online gaming mean, nor a reason to justify $985 for a console.

I say go Nintendo, just dont forget about us (the gamers).

Guys, calm down. We're far from the only place to report this, and it is a tad unusual how the PS3 has already slipped behind a console that's been out for over four months. That's the point here - that PS3 has already slipped behind the Wii in sales. I fully agree it enjoyed a more successful launch than any other console in the UK - something this site
Earth to Chris, the PS2 outsold the Wii and Xbox360 during the PS3 launch period in Australia, that console is 7 years old and it outsold two brand new consoles. So here's another story, "Wii slips behind a console that's been out for 7 years". I guess you'd say its because it's half the price, well so is the Wii to the PS3.

Good way of putting it. But I think its a little too late for that. I cannot see how a machine designed for n00bs can also serve us gamers.

And I am quite hurt by the Chris-Leigh accusations of bias. Chris-Leigh, Mark and Nev are my favourite writers on this website, if not the whole net, due to their level-heads and fairness so back off.

While I'm sure you're hitting more than those three letters, that's about all I'm seeing from your posts. If you want to see nothing but the most glowing spin on everything relating to Sony, then go to a site that covers Sony exclusively.

Yeah but the PS2 outsells everything which is why it's never mentioned. It's just the norm for that to happen. I reckon there are a multitude of other things that outsell the PS3 as well bu as the PS3 is not in direct competition with them they are irelavent. Why are they going to bother saying that the PS3 is being outsold by the older console that Sony just happens to have made? They aren't in competition. The fact that the PS2 is outselling the PS3 is just good news for Sony because it shows how well the PS2 is selling even when the PS3 is selling fairly decently.

Would you like them to make a news story saying that the PS3 outsold the Atari this week or something my friend? Would that make you happy and get you to leave all the sales firgures writers alone?

I see no problem with them doing this - this year along theres two Mario platformers, Smash Bros, Metroid, a new Resident Evil and probably some other stuff I forgot or we don't know about.

In terms of cash (not profit) derived from these sales: -

Wii:- 25,000 x $400 = $10,000,000

PS3: - 17,000 x 1,000 = $17,000,000

7 million more cash sales to Sony. I don't know what this means in terms of profits, as they have developed a much more expensive piece of hardware, but it can't all be that bad.

Off topic sort off:

Honestly, for a website that seems to like Nintendo and it's games, there sure are a lot of people that just have irrational hate.

Also, for the people spewing the same old "omfg wii has no games nintendo sucks" line, when you will realise that Wii Sports is a system seller on the same level as GTA or Halo?

On the Wii as of now, there are two system sellers. As in, actual games that make people say "I'm going to buy that system because I want that game." Not something like Motorstorm. Granted, some people might buy a PS3 for that, but most won't.

The Wii has both Wii Sports and Zelda. Two games that people will buy a console for. And the genius of Nintendo, is that they both appeal to different groups of people. You've got the 'hardcore' (ugh I hate that term) crowd buying it for Zelda, and the general public buying it because Wii Sports is a great game.

Another thing, why the hell did you buy a Wii in the first place if you didn't want to buy any of the games being released. As of December 7 2006, we pretty much knew what we'd be getting up until midway through this year. So, if you looked at the release schedule and didn't like what you saw, why did you buy the console in the first place? Why not wait until games you want to play actually come out?

It's like me buying an Xbox 360 and saying "Man, this sucks, where are my local multiplayer games and party games that my whole family can enjoy? The 360 is a piece of crap." I'd get blasted because that's not what the console is supposed to be. That's not what Microsoft marketed it to be.

My point is, we all knew what the Wii was going into launch, yet people still paid money for it, and now they're complaining.

This is mainly directed at crestfallen by the way, because I'm sick of his trolling.

On topic: The PS3 basically seems to be following the US trend saleswise in Europe. Good sales launch week, massive drop off the weeks after. It's not going to get much better in the coming months, so the bitter fanboy tears will just keep flowing on out.

As has been said in this thread, the current success of the Wii must be coming from all of those 'non-gamers' who are snatching up Wii consoles at the low price point it's selling for.

This is fantastic for Nintendo.
I think it's good that they've expanded their market, but as has also been noted, I hope this doesn't come at the expense of those who really do enjoy to play games a lot - I fall into this category.

Now, the Wii won't be able to deliver the graphical prowess that the PS3 and Xbox 360 can muster, and for that reason, sure, as the years roll on it is possible that the difference in processing power becomes too much for some to justify.

That in mind, I am personally considering an investment in an Xbox 360 or PS3 (probabl not the latter so much - I like the Xbox 360's similarity to the PC, as I am a Mac user, and so the ability to play PC-type games on my TV with the comfy Xbox 360 controller is very appealing).

The Wii, while very unique and promising to deliver some of my favourite franchises (here's looking at you, anything starting with 'Super Mario' or 'Mario Kart'), may not deliver on that blockbuster $26 bajillion budget game with exploding everything and ultra-realistic alien bodily fluids (and let's face it, the ability to control an over-the-top action movie is fantastic).

What am I getting at with all of this?

Well, the Wii has HUGE potential. Right now I'm not happy with it because there are ZERO games out that I want to buy - they will come, however.
The other systems scream out at me for all of those 'BANG!' type of games.

I don't find these sales figures that surprising at this stage - the PS3 is brand new and too expensive for the average consumer. I do think that the state of things will all come down to the future torrent of games for each repsective console (and for me, a second console purchase would mostly be influenced by the exclusive title line-up).

That's my bit of opinion.
