Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games announced

Wii News | We're not kidding.

Sega has announced via a press release that Sonic and Mario are teaming up for Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games. The game has the official Olympics licence, and will see players compete in events that will be in the Beijing 2008 Olympics. The game is set for release on both the Wii and the Nintendo DS.

The title will include Mario and Sonic, as well as characters from both worlds, including Luigi, Knuckles, Yoshi, Tails and more. Shadow wasn't mentioned, and let's hope it stays that way. Apparently, the game will feature, "innovative usage of the Wii and DS control system to manoeuvre (your) favorite character".

"We are thrilled to partner with Nintendo and ISM on this groundbreaking title,” said Hisao Oguchi, President and Chief Operating Officer of Sega. “For the first time, two of the world’s greatest games’ characters come together to compete in the world’s greatest sporting event and we couldn’t be more excited.

"Mario and Sonic have been respectful rivals since the early days of video games,” says Shigeru Miyamoto of Nintendo. “In fact, for a long time they have been discussing the possibility of one day competing against each other. Now that they have been given the perfect opportunity to meet at the Olympic Games, we may finally learn who is actually faster, Mario or Sonic?"

Wow...

I'm interested to see how this turns out.

Mario and Sonic in the same game - an Olympics themed game at that.

I was kind of hoping the first game to have both mascots competing against each other would be 'Super Smash Bros. Brawl' (still hoping to see Sonic in that game), and then this news emerged.

Colour me skeptical.

I'll take up the time-honored position of The Cynic, but unless this is more of a Mario-sports style title that happens to have Sonic characters, instead of an Olympics game that happens to have a few video-game icons slapped on it, then... well, it'll probably suck.
It's just the whole modeling it after the real Olympic sports rather than doing a more Mario/Sonic theme centric thing that sets off my 'OH NOES' alarm.

I'm definitely going to pick this up. Not for me, mind you... I think it's the worst idea I've heard since Steve Bracks suggested adding air holes to make the Burnley Tunnel less stuffy.

My 4-year-old son, on the other hand, simply adores Sonic, Mario and all the supporting characters.. especially Knuckles and Yoshi.

He is going to freak.

*Crosses fingers and toes* C'mon, let them take that next step. It will be the best SSB game ever if it has Sonic.

Though it does kind of wreck the Nintendo character exclusivity of the games (however, look at Snake).

This is pretty cool news. Could you imagine taking someone from back when Sonic first came out, who was a massive fan, and had drawn one of those Sonic vs Mario pics, and bringing them to the present?

There you go. The integration of Sega and Nintendo's mascot characters. That is now a definate for SSB.

And I agree, what a horrible idea. Who can run faster? Whoever can mash that button or swing that remote baby.
