More evidence for Wii NiGHTS emerges

Wii News | Almost a certainty now, surely. Please?
It can't be too long before we get cast-iron confirmation that Saturn classic NiGHTS Into Dreams is getting a Wii sequel. The speculation behind a new NiGHTS on Nintendo's console all kicked off around ten days ago, when a teaser image in the latest edition of Official Nintendo Magazine whipped fans into a frenzy. That was swiftly followed by US site Spong claiming it had received confirmation from an anonymous insider revealing that the project was indeed on.

Now, with the official announcement still to arrive in our inboxes, Swedish games magazine GameReactor has backed the "NiGHTS-on-Wii" speculation, with the front cover of its April issue dedicated to the would-be project. In others words, things are either looking increasingly hopeful, or this is the cruelest April Fools trick since, well, perhaps EVER.

More as we get it. For now, pop over to the Media Panel for a look at the GameReactor cover.

It has to be true, it has too icon_pray.gif If it's not it is the most cruel global punishment the industry has done.

Poor ONM, tis isn't a world exclusive on your behalf. First Battalion Wars 2, now this, ONM can't hold it's exclusives.

On an up side. That is new artwork isn't it?

I still don't quite understand how Nights will be played with the Wii controller set-up. It's a 2D game!

It might not stay that way. It's not exactly the first game that would make a transition from 2D to 3D.

Sega Superstars on PS2 had 3D Nights. Such an underrated game, Sega Superstars. *tsk tsk*

Strong majority of games started 2D and went 3D

Why would you think NiGHTS would be any different?

Putting it into 3D would not be hard. Ecco: Tides of Time on the Dreamcast was brilliant except for the map was totally useless.

You've all missed the point.

Why bother dredging up an ancient franchise if it's going to be totally different? I'd rather a sequel that played like the original then an entirely new game that's just trading off the brand name, wouldn't you?

Never played Metroid Prime, David?

A much different situation. Metroid was an established, high selling franchise with a deep back story, not a lone game. A sequel was expected per Nintendo platform - only the N64 missed out (and Prime was originally being developed on the N64 anwyay). There was an eight year gap between Super Metroid and Prime, but that was only slightly above average anyway (Metroid -> Metroid 2 was five years).

It wasn't only an action game, so all of the non-action elements could be carried over as-is, even with a change in the action style (just like Zedla's 2D -> 3D transformation). And Metroid Prime was also preceded by a new 2D Metroid game.

Nights was a one-off almost purely action game on a failed Sega platform eleven years ago.

That all said, it may still be a 2D game (with 3D graphics) anyway. My only question was why it was apparently suited to the Wii, as so many people claim. Unless they come up with something that's truly in the spirit of the original, yet uses the motion stuff brilliantly too. I don't have too much faith in Sega to do that at this point though.

The Metroid Prime situation is hardly any different.

Yes, it is an established franchise, though the evolution from 2D to 3D refined the gameplay into a number of ways, completely different to what the series was about. Prior to Prime's release it also caused worry from fans as to how Retro would change the gameplay.

And, honestly, Nights is in a similar boat - not particularly sure how the evolution to a new system will change the way the game is played. But nevertheless, could be much better.

Besides, you said Nights was a 'franchise' not me.

Eh, I can't say I have any real excitement for this. I mean, when was the last time Sonic Team made a great game?

Are we playing the same version of Metroid Prime? As far as I'm concerned it's one of the most faithful recreations of a 2D game going into the realm of 3D ever. "Refining" the gameplay in this instance did not change anything about "what the series was about."

Sonic is a good example of a franchise losing everything that made it fun in 2D (sense of speed, etc.).

3 years is slight? icon_eek.gif

Gameplay mechanics were drastically different compared to the 2D games, and the first-person perspective completely changed the way the game is played too. I never said it was a bad alteration, merely pointing it out as a good example of recreating a series.

As for Sonic - even if you fixed the camera issues that most 3D Sonic games have had, it doesn't change the fact that the formula for Sonic is dry as week old poop.

I'm waiting for this too!

NiGHTS remains one of my favourite games ever. I would love to see a sequel and think there are myriad ways the Wiimote could be used... the pointer was the control mechanism I thought would be best suited to NiGHTS established 2.5D world: I imagined tracing paraloops not manipulating the Nightopian with motion sensors. I too am worried about Sonic Team butchering what was a unique experience and wonder if any sequel could be made properly without Naka at the helm. But for now all this is conjecture, and full of hope I look to the future longing for NiGHTS Wii to play like a dream.

Assuming the project is underway, we don't really know who is developing the game. I'd be highly sceptical if it turns out to be Sonic Team, but I'm hoping it is going to be the first thing to come out Yuji Naka's PROPE.

Playable to 2 players, NiGHTS Wii was to propose an on-line mode, new characters, and new movements with Wiimote. The official advertisement of Sega should take place at the beginning of April, we will thus have right to more details on this play in a few days.

Beginning of April... that's not a long time to wait. I want to see it in motion.
