Koei announce Opoona

Wii News | A new Wii exclusive.
Koei has today revealed that it will be publishing an exclusive RPG game for the Wii developed by ArtePiazza.

The title in question is called Opoona and follows the exploits of a boy named Opoona (hence the title), who investigates a series of strange events on the planet Landroll which have left his parents in hospital and younger siblings missing.

In the game, players will need to obtain licenses to travel to other colonies by taking on the role of either a detective, idol or rescuer, among others.

At this stage, Koei are remaining tight-lipped about any further details however, movement and combat will supposedly be controlled exclusively by the Nunchuck controller leaving the Wii remote without any gameplay functionality.

Art Director of Dragon Quest VII, Shintaro Majima, is said to be behind the visuals of Opoona with Sachiko Yukimura taking on the role of Planning Director. Final Fantasy XII composer, Hitoshi Sakimoto, is also set to be composing the soundtrack for the game.

There is currently no set release date for the game but we'll keep you posted as more information becomes available. For the meantime, you can check out some concept art in our Media Panel.

Saw a few 'in-game' screenshots over at 1up yesterday, although even if I hadn't I'd still be sold just on the art style... and if I wasn't sold on the art style I'd probably be sold on the people working on this icon_wink.gif

I'm not going to go and say that 'this is the kind of game that the Wii needs more of' because the little info about nunchuk use so far is vague at best - but I will say that I'd like to see more games like this on the Wii (hell, any new IPs on the Wii!).

I am keeping my eye on this one, that's for sure.

Opoona and Dewy should go in a mud wrestling competition to form the ultimate game. Whahahaha.

More like any new games, period. I know we got Sonic, but that isn't going to last months.

I'm more interesting in games created for the Wii rather than the lazy ports with wiimote controls shoe-horned in that we've been getting. New IPs would not only give devs ciomplete freedom to make new and interesting controls without having to worry about the inevitable comparisons that re-imagining older/current games would bring, but it would help differentiate the Wii even more from the other current (much more graphically advanced) consoles.

But I do agree that the post launch dearth of games is no fun icon_smile.gif

The guys porting games to Wii, will then complain that they aren't making many sales. Don't they think. Even general consumers can see through the cheap graphics and awful controls Ubisoft and co deliver. Make an original outstanding game to get noticed.

As for this game. I love the character design, oh so cute. I know fans want more realistic "mature" titles. But face it, this is Nintendo console and a good porportion of it's users are kids.

But one of Cubes great selling games was RE4... It's a tough world in Nintendo land... *sigh* RE:UC... when.
