Two new Virtual Console titles added

Wii News | Fancy a game of Galaga?
Nintendo has just updated the Wii shop channel with two new games, Galaga and Super Ghouls N' Ghosts.

Galaga was originally released on the NES and is available for 500 points. The game is a fixed arcade shooter that was developed by Namco and originally released in 1981. The game has been ported to just about every console released in the past fifteen years, so its inclusion on the Wii shop channel doesn't come as much of a surprise.

Super Ghouls N' Ghosts was originally released on the SNES in 1991 by Capcom. The game is a platformer and is renowned for being one of the hardest titles ever made. If you live in the UK tonight you'll also have access to Double Dungeons for the Turbografx, but Australians miss out on this title.

More reasons to buy a Wii.

IMO the NES version of galaga was a really good port, Alot better than the Xbox port.

Damn, wish i could play double dragon....will Turbografx games ever come out in Aus??? Just because it was never released here does that mean theres some kind of legal thing stopping Nintendo putting Turbografx games on VC?

Please read the article again, it's not "double dragon" but "double dungeons" which the people in the UK are getting. A different game completely.

Well 2 nice additions to the VC, especially Super Ghouls 'N Ghosts.

I thought Double Dragon wasn't released for the Turbografx. icon_lol.gif Shame Double Dragon would have made a nice addition.

Galaga I would be excited about if I didn't have the Live Arcade version. Super Ghouls 'n' Ghosts I might have to download.

I have Double Dragon 2 on it (Japanese PC Engine CD format), so DD1 probably was as well.

Nintendo should really not be holding back on the titles.

Why not just push out mass releases and watch the Wii Points climb, rather than throwing a couple of pastey scraps to us each week?

Galaga? Ice Climber? Why would I pay money for most of this crap they've released as opposed to emulating it on the PC im typing from is insulting. How about some greats like Excitebike 64, Lylat Wars or LINK to the f*cking PAST already! Mass release and give people variety, because for the time being, it looks like "Wii Garage Sale Channel" rather than a Shop Channel. Nintendo's next big mistake was region restricting their Virtual Consoles. No Turbo Graf-X or NeoGeo? This is electronic distribution, you simpletons.. WTF?!

Don't get me wrong.. I still enjoy the Wii for now. But as far as support for the console goes; Nintendo are on VERY thin ice right now. There's no point delivering innovative hardware if you dont do anything with it.

If all they can come up with is a poor ass retro release every few weeks, bugger all decent actual games for the system and releasing a 'Channel' every now and then which is fun to play for about a minute or so, then eventually we'll see Mario on the 360 and PS3 consoles.

You better not have just said that Galaga was crap, that game could steal hours from a person the only NES game that surpassed it for sheer replayability was Gun Smoke (at least in this humble posters opinion).

Im not saying Galaga is crap as a game unto itself, just that Nintendo's 'conduct' of releasing a few very old games that each week that; like you said.. chew up a few hours or less, is poor. Games with less depth obviously take up less time, unless you are mad about them and would play them to death and beyond. That's why they really should consider releasing more games of that type or from that era. If Nintendo want to cater to the 80s crowd - great! Just more options and variety please. A couple games at a time is a really draconian way to do things in my opinion. Perhaps it would be acceptable provided there was a far larger software library for the Wii, but this isnt the case right now, so Nintendo need as much focus on / use of their console that they can get. Thus one would think digitally distributing older software shouldnt be too hard a thing to do.

What's your comparison?

Poor/Good are comparisons..........are you comparing it to the one only other service that is comparable to VC?That is MS LIVE.Because if you are, vc is churning out excellent titles in abundance.

I'd only compare it to XBox Live Marketplace if I owned or otherwise had access to it. I dont and most likely wont, thus my comparison is to general access to retro content offered by Virtual Console that all of us who own a PC and internet connection are capable of obtaining. That my friends, is Emulation. The question Nintendo should be asking themselves is would the ordinary every day gaming demographic pay ~$7.50AUD for a simplistic game (by today's standards) that was released a quarter century ago, or download and play it on their PC via emulation?

So your argument is basically:

"Why would I buy a car when I can steal one".

You ever thought that some people have morals? And maybe that they prefer glitch free emulation and a nice controller and TV for their games?

This doesnt apply to me personally, but yes. Piracy has and will be a problem in the foreseeable future. Just because the act is unlawful doesnt mean Nintendo has to ignore it. It must COMPETE with it, plain and simple. When a company is trying to break into a market, it must rise above all conceivable angles of competition, and let's face it ladies and gentlemen.. if a gaming company like Nintendo, Sony or Microsoft ignored piracy, they would make absolutely no money on their software. Why do you think they go to such lengths to make their software media as hard to crack as possible?

Im saying that right now, in the Wii's case; it needs every bit of help it can get to hold the upper hand in this current gen contest. The Wii is technically the weakest of all 3 consoles, so it must make up for it's misgiving with something else. Nintendo are yet to do this via their own Wii software (can you pick 10 must own games for the Wii?), or their saleable add-ons (with Virtual Console being of the immediate sort). From a marketing and profit point of view, Nintendo lose by releasing such a small selection of games so slowly, not to mention the people who own Wiis lose out in this equation too... because they have bugger all to play. A wide choice and variety is key here. Dont force things onto people because not everyone has identical tastes.

Does anyone even slightly agree with me here?

Getting a game converted from a cartridge format to a ROM format takes time - and getting it working without glitches - it's not as simple as copying a floppy disk or ripping a CD...

That's very possible; but unfortunately no excuse as to lack of releases. If Virtual Console was a last second addition to the Wii; then fine. I would accept that reasoning as to why we are getting sweet f*ck all (pardon the French)..

Unfortuantely, Virtual Console was announced fairly early on before the actual release of the system, so one could speculate that the people working at Nintendo knew that this was simply more than a mere afterthought, thus they should really have started this allegedly time consuming process well in advance.

But like a kid cramming all they can on the last night before the exam, it looks like Nintendo have thrown it all to the wind thus far. It's a costly mistake. The so called 'Console Wars' are very real and are big business, so console releases these days have high expectations and need to greet the masses with a bang. Nintendo may have a sexy and innovative console, but what else to show for it? On the Wii Software side, we have tacky ports and one or two titles that are truly worthy of owning.. limited online functionality, and a shabby stab at retro emulation. They need to try harder. Its not like they own the entire market here.
