GDC 2007: Super Mario Galaxy confirmed for 2007 release

Wii News | New screens and trailer released to celebrate.
Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto has confirmed during his GDC 2007 keynote address that gamers can expect to be able to play Super Mario Galaxy in 2007.

It's been a long time since we last heard anything on the game, so we were beginning to question whether we'd see the game this year or not. To celebrate the announcement, Nintendo released a few images and a new trailer of the game in action.

Oh hell yeah. Excitement metre is in the thousands with this one.

Between this and Super Paper Mario its going to be a bloody good year for games (and thats not even mentioning the all the other great stuff coming out). Us PAL gamers better get this when the rest of the world does.

Very nice indeed, those new pics look sweet. icon_smile.gif I'm very happy to hear about an '07 release, now all we need is a solid release date! It's been so long since there's been a new Mario game for a console.

This is looking great. My only criticism though is the level designs we've seen. They just don't feel right. They seem too disjointed and abstract. What I'd like to see are some of the really big open areas we saw in Mario 64 and Sunshine, rather than 100 little bits floating in space.

Pretty much the best thing ever.

Only SLIGHTLY ahead of Super Paper Mario though.

^ I'd agree with you there Cer, but I'm hoping that this was just to show of the many different elements in the demo. I mean, it really wouldn't be that interesting to shopw of a planet that is so big it just looks liks an ordinary world from 64/Sunshine.

I think that may be the beaty of this game, anything is possible. Differnt gravity/physics along with the conventional gameplay, new worlds and ideas, also along with conventional worlds.

Just saw the new trailer and I said wow. I got to agree with Spanca though, the design of the game is a bit too out there. Visually though, it looks fantastic.

I'm not Cerebral icon_sad.gif

But yeah, I'm inclined to think it's just a matter of what they're showing in this trailer. I really do hope there's a good proportion of 'regular' levels in the game though.

this definetely has improved since the last time we saw it.

icon_redface.gif Sorry Spanca. Must be a combination of your new avatar and my inability to comprehend simple English at times.

You have summed up my thoughts exactly.

I love the more open levels of Mario 64. I'm hoping that there is going to a balance of both. It is looking super pretty too. Now, I just have to wait ....

Spanca, if you look at the trailer you can see areas where there is a full blue sky, so I assume there will be big planets and such.

I know, I saw that, but I also added above that I'd like to see this stuff in 'good proportion' to the rest, and by 'good' I mean more than 5%.

I totally agree with you there Spanca.

That said, this game is looking fantastic - I'm really liking the 'out there' feel of the game, and it's looking like off-beat platforming focus is the key here - definitely very excited about this game.

This game is looking even better than before. Anyone else notic the Yoshi egg planet? lol. The game looks like a lot of fun and appears to use broad "meteor" levels where Mario jumps from location to location via that star thing a well as feature of few bigger, more open ended worlds.

In the words of Borat, wow wow weee waw.

I maybe a little rough on the Wii but if it can constantly produce games like this then it definately has a place this gen, in my eyes.

That being said though, Nintendo games are always the best games on a Nintendo console. Please don't let this be the climax icon_pray.gif

This game is looking incredible, although I am looking more forward to Super Paper Mario. I think they both have the potential to personify greatness and show why Mario has been the king for the past 20 years. Super Paper Mario looks like it will give me more of a classic Mario experience on a console, which has been a while, while Galaxy will show where the series is headed.

Both titles look like they are going to be amazing, which is about time considering how let down I was with Sunshine

This game looks excellent. It is one of the best looking upcoming Wii games and looks like fun to play. The colors of the game look very bright and bold, it makes me feel good just by looking at it.

I also share some of your concerns about level design. I don't want the game to feel as disjointed as Wind Waker felt when you were boat riding. Hopefully the use of smaller planets and gravity will work out well, it is really hard to tell by just looking at the video. By the looks of things it appears as though only one world had lots of smaller planets. From what we can see though it doesn't look like the camera will be a problem.

The graphics on the game look awesome, stuff the clip, I just stare at the pictures and all the pretty colours icon_biggrin.gif. I agree, I hope there are more open areas to run and jump around in like in previous games. At least I know how to beat two bosses now thanks to the clip (haven't watched the new one yet [If they are in the final game]).
