Okami coming to Wii?

Wii Rumour | Not the clearest of pictures, though.
The PS2 version has only just been released in Australia and the UK, but that hasn't stopped IGN UK from posting speculation about a sequel or port of Clover Studio's Okami. IGN claims it's heard that Capcom USA is looking to port the game to Nintendo's Wii console to generate extra sales for the underperforming title. They claim a "reliable industry insider unaffiliated with Capcom" has told them that the developer is "seriously considering" a Wii version of Okami, and that it may already be in development.

Many people who've played Okami thought immediately of the Wii in the paintbrush sections, as the Wii remote seems to be the perfect controller for the game, and thus this rumour has arrived on top of months of wishful speculation.

But the story continues, as IGN contacted Capcom UK about the rumour, and while they don't outright deny it, they do everything but, saying "Officially we have no plans for Okami on Wii at this time. Research and development are always looking at possibilities but given Clover is now closed for business, I think it highly unlikely a Wii version would be possible."

While it's still unlikely to happen - ports of underperforming games rarely do any better on the new platform - a denial from a small regional subsidiary hardly quashes the rumour altogether. We'll keep an ear out for any word on the alleged project from Capcom's more senior divisions. In the meantime, you could always paint over a jpeg of Okami art in the Wii's photo channel and pretend you have the game...

DO IT. DO IT.

I must be one of about 4 people without a PS2, but I want to play this game.

(Not that I have a Wii anyway, but the more consoles its on the more chance there is that I will get one with it).

Had Okami been a Wii launch title it would have been pick of the litter. Direct comparisons to Zelda would have been interesting and I think during this time it would have sold really well. By the time this Wiimake never happens I'll be done with it on PS, a bit of a missed opportunity methinks.

As long as the gesture recognition was spot-on, this would be an awesome boost to the Wii's library, and I'd gladly miss out on the PS2 version in the short-term and wait for this to come out.

So long as it's just the painting that's mapped to the remote.. and you don't have to fling it around in circles to attack, or something. icon_confused.gif

That must make me the second, along with having no Wii as well icon_smile.gif

Very difficult rumour to place anything on though, no matter how few or lots of us want it to be true.

This kinda news was actually one of the reasons why I was holding back on getting a copy straightaway today.

Hopefully it'll become a reality - or else I see myself spending quite a bit more than RRP for a copy of the PS2 version on eBay in a years time...

I'm with döppelganger, if it was a launch that would stella. But complaints of the great games being ports would occur.

I'd buy it, so that's a win right there. I hope I end up getting Okami; I've had to physically restrain myself every time I see it, knowing that I must devote all time to Final Fantasy XII when it comes out. If I get it, I want to enjoy it BY ITSELF. A Wii port would rationalise that.

A good point there with Zelda's high attach rate it would make Okami even more appealing to Wii owners. Hopefully something comes from this rumour because I would be very interested it picking it up for Wii. One of the first impressions I heard of Okami was that Nintendo gamers would appreciate this game so it seems like a no brainer.
