Super Paper Mario no longer coming to Cube

Wii News | Wii release only.
Just a few short days ago, we reported that Super Paper Mario, a retro rampage of Mario platforming goodness, is scheduled for an April 2007 release. The problem was that noone was exactly sure which console the title would be appearing on - the absolute confirmation of the GameCube release was still undetermined.

It appears now that Super Paper Mario will ship exclusively for the Wii, pretty much single-handedly sending the GameCube into a black hole forever. This is something of a transitional phase for Nintendo, as previous GC games are shifting to the hyper-selling Wii platform.

It also appears some early control scheme has been confirmed. Players will hold the Wii Remote sideways to play, using the directional pad for movement and the A button to shift between a 2D and 3D perspective. The 2 button is used for jumping, and shaking the Wii Remote will also give extra points if performed while jumping on enemies.

Not long now until Super Paper Mario sees the light of day here in Australia, and we've compiled a comprehensive preview in anticipation. Enjoy!

we all knew that was gonna happen.

Yea but it's good to have that info confirmed.

Also is it me or does anyone else think holding the wiimote on it's side is real crap? I mean for short bursts it's fine but I don't wanna play a whole game holding it like that!! It feels like a NES controller with a chunk taken out of it (B trigger)....which is like the least ergonomic controller EVER!!!

I'm not looking foward to Excite Truck using that scheme but atleast the balancing feature (when in a jump) actually makes it practical for that game.

Anyways game is a musthave for me....so crap control scheme or not....it'll own!

^ Look forward to Excite Truck icon_wink.gif

That control style makes sense for that game, and before long you won't even notice how you're holding it.

And Paper Mario, woo.

What's that old saying about "rats" and "sinking ships?"

Excellent news, simply because it will get much more coverage as a Wii game. If they include Gamecube or classic controller support, then it will be the best of both worlds. Shame for GCN owners, but at the rate it's selling, 90% of GCN owners will have upgraded by the end of the year anyway.

Huh? The ship sank in 2005.

At least the Gamecube's successor is already out. The original Xbox had no 1st party releases for almost a whole year BEFORE the 360 was released in Australia. And apart from games delayed from their US releases from as early as September last year (Okami, FF12 etc), the PS2 doesn't have much coming either.

Yeah, give GCN and/or classic controller support!

Double huh? I didn't say it was a bad thing.. Makes perfect sense. The game will sell a LOT better on the Wii than on the 'Cube.

You did forget God of War 2 though... which would sell worse if it were re-jigged for the PS3. Which is more like.. a rat.. uh.. lazing comfortably with a fruit **** on the deck of a luxury liner... looking down and shaking his head at the rats floundering and grasping onto the sides of the gradually surfacing submarine USS PS3..?

^^missed my stealth edit.

God of War didn't actually sell that well considering the hype - about 1.5 million worldwide. But yeah, it would be smart of devs to release more PS2 games (and GCN games with the Wii's backward compat) that actually pushed the system well rather then the crappy downgraded ports it's getting now (eg Tony Hawk 8).

But they all want to be 'breakout next gen devs' like Rockstar was for last gen, so they're scrambling to release PS3/360/Wii games.

Ah, well. Yeah, it depends on whether you mean "good" titles, or titles that just sell well. Shadow of the Colossus didn't exactly light up the charts, and I'm guessing Okami won't either. I imagine the PS2 will continue to get its fair share of "Need for Speed" this, and "Tony Hawk" that for another year or two.

It's an interesting dichotomy, because developers are better off to port games to the Wii to cash in on its sudden rise to popularity, whereas they're probably better off to stick with the PS2 over the PS3 because of the former's immense install base.

What's irritating is that, even though the Wii is backwards compatable, GameCube games will still vanish from shelves, because most non/casual gamers don't know about the backwards compatability, and probably don't know that they need a GameCube controller and memory card.. And if they do, good luck finding them.

I'd like to see Nintendo upgrade the firmware so you can save GameCube game saves onto the Wii's memory instead of using a GameCube memory card, and maybe bring out a new line of wireless GameCube controllers specifically designed for the Wii... I'd kind of imagined the Wii Classic Controller would play that part, but it only works for some games, right?

Nintendo's view on control pads is that they are "old school" hence why it's "classic" controller, they are all about touch pads and wiimotes, at least they are eating their own story.

The 1up podcast had an interesting talk about this, they're seeing a lot of upcoming PS2/PSP games, and even PS2/PSP/Wii games, as they're easy to develop for and port to than next gen games. Assuming the PSP doesn't totally die off there might end up being a lot of PS2 ports of PSP games, or more likely simultaneous releases. The sheer volume of PS2s out there should stop it fading away that quickly, especially with the cost of upgrading.

Woo, thread offtopic again! Err, looking forward to Super Paper Mario on the Wii...

I don't see why the game can't use Zelda like controls? The Nunchuck for moving around and the wiimote for button presses.

Can't wait for Super Paper Mario! icon_smile.gif Now, we need a solid release date.

One: Since when is 1.5 million not good? That's awesome sales for a niche genre and a new IP.

Two: I don't know where you're pulling your sources, but that's incredibly false. It sold remarkable well, causing it to go the Greatest Hits range within 4-5months of its US release, which is obviously an indication of good sales. Last I heard (from the developers in Nov06') they had just surpassed 1.8million in America alone.

Admittedly, the sales in Japan were woeful, as was the case with its PAL release. David Jaffe though said that it has surpassed 2.5million sales worldwide, and with the release of God of War 2, I'd imagine that would increase.

As for this topic. Nintendo wouldn't benefit from releasing this on the GC anyway. Terrible install base that would cause more harm than good.

One - read what I said:

People talk like this game is up there with the Marios, Zeldas, GTAs and Halos in sales, when it's more a Jak or Twisted Metal. And unless it's sold a lot in Europe, I said, (from memory, just based on something I read) 'about 1.5 million' which is not any order of magnitude wrong, even if it has sold 1.8 million in the US.

Two: Source?
VGcharts, which usually overestimates sales, has it at 1.65 million. This Sony press release from last march stated that it and GT4 had sold 2.5 million between them. I can't imagine it's sold a huge ammount more since then since it's an old game.

While I dont want to argue, just looking from a sony resellers point of view
my sales of GT4 and GoW have doubled since last march due to a cheaper price point, apparently this has been the case in most pal territories.
whether this is the case in the states is anyones guess.

No suprises here, really we all knew that it was going to happen it was only a matter on when they would annouce it. At least they will be using thier resources more effective on the Wii.

True. Nintendo can see that the GCN is completely dead, why would they bother.

The interview was on Business Week. I can't be bothered pulling up the interview, but I'm sure with some investigating someone should be able to pull it up. Business Week>>>>>>VGCharts (sigh).

That news piece is nearly a year old, and 'before' the game's greatest hit price point, which undoubtedly sold a lot of gamers - that's the point of the Greatest Hit range.

And I did read what you said, but I don't really understand how - we'll go off your figures - 1.5million is bad, especially based off a niche genre and a new IP (sounds like I'm saying it again).

Im not happy about this - I purchased a Gamecube so does Nintendo believe in customer support? Am I correct in saying that Nintendo did at some point say it was coming to GC?

Pay up please!

Anyway - the Wii is a Gamecube.

HOORAY! I gotta get this along with Eledeeds (whatever), Excite Truck and another game that comes before like Super Mario Galaxy or SSBB

Zelda?

IRT Cookie:
Well, the GC was released in, what? 2002? Ninty's been giving support right up until late 2006, that's 4 years worth. This is pretty much the standard support period for all consoles, particularly ones that didn't fare to well for that generation. Besides, as has already been stated in this topic, MS and Sony both basically stopped 1st-party support by the end of the Xbox's and PS2's lifespan (apart from the neverending Singstar games). The dropping of 1st-party support is probably more pronounced on the Gamecube because it had such low 3rd-party support.
