One million Wiis sold in Japan

Wii News | PS3 sales secure half that amount.
Enterbrain, a Japanese magazine publisher has released sale figures detailing the Wii has sold nearly 1 million units in Japan between the period of December 2nd and January 7th.

Surveying 3,500 stores across the country, Enterbrain revealed that 989,118 Wii units had been sold, more than doubling that of the PlayStation 3.

Releasing just under a month before Wii on November 11th, and following stock shortages, Enterbrain stated the PlayStation 3 had sold 466,716 units since launch.

As for the Xbox 360, the publisher as of yet has not released any stats concerning the console which has struggled to follow the its success in America and PAL regions. Media Create, did however show a climb in sales following the release of Blue Dragon, an Xbox 360 exclusive.

UPDATE:
We now have the end of year figures for all current platforms courtesy of Famitsu:

End of 2006

Is that all? I would have expected double that by now. Those Japanese are Wii crazy at the moment

Until there is alot of Japanese friendly games, the 360 will not make considerable progress there. DoA and Blue Dragon seem to be the only titles that they would really care about

^ The article compares the Wii sales and PS3 sales... yet you bring up 360 sales for no other reason than to put them down. Well done on trolling again.

Actually, the article mentions that there aren't any figures for the 360 over that period yet and that it has been doing relatively poorly in Japan.

Also, yeah, I'm a little surpised that the Wii figure isn't double that already. Can't sell more stock than you have, though icon_wink.gif

I'm kinda suprised it to go so big in Japan for wii, mainly cause I havent seen many must-have title for the Japanese gamers. I recall Wii sport was hot, but nothing else.

Im telling it like it is, the 360 will not release sales figures because it does poorly there

Quite simply put the 360 is a western world machine while Sony and Nintendo have big Japanese support

I may have a grudge against Microsoft but it has nothing to do with the Japanese sales. I do not want Microsoft to be dominant in the console market, the Windows monopoly basically ruined the IT industry and Microsoft hope to do the same thing with consoles, hell they pushed Windows Media Format to be the codec used in HD DVD, thankfully that didn't happen.

A Microsoft owned console market will be $120 for a game disc where the games will be bareboned at best and charge for little pieces that make up the next game, where the full game will be over $200.

If you think that is an exaggeration do not forget it is Microsoft, they will do whatever it takes to be a monopoly so they can charge through the nose so you will have no choice but to take it

Nintendo have done the hard work, now they big a massive E3 with awesome games to keep it going. Q1 and Q2 look bare!

And that's far worse than Nintendo charging $100 for games that a vastly technologically inferior, yet when Microsoft packs a disc with HD content and offers optional extras it's a horrible thing? If you're going to judge value based on what's on the disc, at least put things in perspective. Microsoft are hardly the ones offering "barebones" discs. That being said, there won't be a "Company X owned console market". You even admit you have a grudge against Microsoft, so why do you keep up with the pathetic trolling?

Yea you're definately getting more value for money with Microsoft stuff. Hell i'm talking from experience....when the original xbox launched in aus they dropped the price drastically after about 2 weeks and microsoft honoured the early adopters with $250 worth of microsoft products (same amount the price cut was)....i've never heard of anything like that in the video game industry and it actually changed my stance on microsoft as a company....it seems they do actually care about their customers.....which is way more than I can say for Nintendo. Infact the last two nintendo handhelds I have bought i've been ripped off because the items have been faulty and Nintendo have failed to honour this by offereing replacements free of charge (yes they were always within warranty). Bad bad form on Nintendo's part and amazingly awesome form on Microsoft's part! That's a HUGE contrast to someone who spends their hard earned dollars.

that brought a tear to my eye.....

^ Is that sarcasm I hear? The thing is Microsoft had no obligation or need to give the early adopters anything to compensate for the price drop, yet they did. 2 free games and a controller was very generous. Contrast that with Ugh's situation with Nintendo, where Nintendo should have been under an obligation to fix the faulty product (hell they even did in the US) but here they flat out refused to honour their warranty.

How did this turn into a Microsoft/Nintendo debate again? Oh that's right, renegadesx started slagging off Microsoft again.

1) I certainly don't give a rats arse on what gets sold in Japan in whatever amounts, hell I don't even care what gets sold here amount wise.

2) Why do people place so much emphasis on the pickup rate of consoles in japan as if it is going to dictate on whether a console is going to succeed or not.

3) Why do people even bother having debates over which console is selling more than the other, got shares in the company or something and are worried about your investment?

(EDIT: to Spanca) ^^Honestly - for once he wasn't trolling IMO.

Anyway, full Japanese figures from Famitsu:

---------------------------------------------------------

End of 2006

Wii: 989,118
PS3: 466,716
Xbox360: 290,467 (sold 99,798 in Dec 2006, because Blue Dragon.)

DS (DS Lite): 13,950,000
PSP: 4,510,000

ALSO:
Wii: to Jan 07 1,135,671
(Don't know why they don't have the others yet)
---------------------------------------------------------

14 Million DSes in two years! If supply is kept up, the DS will be the highest selling platform of all time in Japan by mid year.

^ What's the PS2 figure to beat over there, for all time?
@Xcs:sIVE

2) easiest to answer - so i'll go with that first.

traditionally, Japan has the highest per capita sales of consoles (in general) in the world, and it served basically as a microcosm for what the rest of the world did.

this pretty much stopped last gen when the XBox was a good seller in the rest of the world, but was shocking in Japan.

Also, traditionally, Japan produces more of the games for consoles than the rest of the world, and was again used as a microcosm for how the rest of the world buys. and again, last gen changed this too.

traditions die-hard i guess.

1 & 3) pretty much the same question i guess. same answer anywau.

looking out for their own investment is probably the right answer. you've seen how shafted people felt for following the Gamecube last gen (and Sega too, for that matter) when it had a relatively poor reception and support in Australia. at least knowing something is supported OS means that the money isn't wholey wasted as you can import games and whatnot.

The PS2 only just reached 20 million a month ago.

Yeah thats what I was going to say relating to japan sales dictating the future of a product, the xbox certainly did change all that.
Especially in the game programming sense.Look at all the western countries now developing games.

I just feel that alot of people use those sales quotes not for the above fact which I believe is very true but they use it ultimately as their 'stats' in the VS war with which to bombard the enemy or shall we say the lesser seller.

I find it quite kiddie and moronic at the same time.
I guess it is the little nubrats that use that ammo anyway.

By the way, that was not trolling, this is trolling

you ready?

You really forget that Xbox is a MICROSOFT product. It serves a greater purpose to them, I do not want to pay $120 - $130 a game and than have to pay extra because I bought an incomplete game. No thanks, games are too expensive as they are, so when I buy it I expect the complete product. and by the way you are a fanboy but then again so are the majority of gamers out there weather they want to believe it or not.

I do not think the 360 is a bad console, im sure soon there will be some pretty good games for it. But it is a Microsoft product and hence is victim to Microsofts business practices like the above mentioned. No thanks I've owned just about every console avaliable in Australia for the past 20+ years ive been gaming. I have never owned a Windows licence (went from OS/2 to Mac to Linux and I have gotten along quite well in a lifetime of boycotting actually buying their garbage.

Difference between me and a fanboy is a fanboy promotes the hell out of a product or a company, I pick on the one I hate. I have slagged Sony like I do with Linux, not because I don't like them, I do, It just **** me when they make these obvious blunders when they can do so much better, and for one I would like Sony beat the 360, I like the Wii because its fun and innovative.

Guess it cant be all bad, if Microsoft forgets about the PC gaming business enough, games could be more popular on the Mac and Linux platforms.

Microsoft want to own everything that has anything to do with technology, if not own (like the Internet) at least control, it is not a company worth spitting on let alone supporting.

now that was a troll
