Super Mario Bros. released on Virtual Console

Wii News | Pixelated perfection.
Today sees the release of the original, classic platformer Super Mario Bros. Originally released on the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1987, this title paved the way for a seemingly unstoppable franchise, still one of the most popular in the world today.

The game is available for download via the Wii's Virtual Console service, costing 500 Wii Points. Some may consider this a bit expensive for a twenty-year old game, but anyone who missed out on the original should give it a shot. PALGN can happily report that it plays very well, and the two player mode is still available for some multiplayer fun. Enjoy!

this is where i'm torn.

i'd love to play Super Mario Brothers again, but do i buy it now, or wait for the inevitable release of Super Mario Allstars once all 4 titles are released seperately?

i remember Allstars having totally redone/better graphics.

does that sound right?

Yeah, it was completely updated for the SNES with fancy graphics and the 'real' SMB2 as an added extra. Good little cart, that one.

No ways obs no no way will they ever release all stars again, in any shape or form.

If they did, we would have seen it on gba.

I agree - we wont see Mario All Stars ever again. If they can sell the games seperately on GBA for $30 - $70 they can sell them each for $10 or whatever it is on the virtual console.

So... is this it for this week? SMB is great, but theres no reason to only have one game a week. Really weak, Nintendo.

I'll wait for the UK update and see what PC engine games turn up today.

That's probably why it's only Mario - our releases are the UK releases minus PC Engine games, so if a week is stacked with them we'll end up with jack (and jack left town).

I will wait for All Stars, that one has the REAL Super Mario Bros 2 (lost levels)

chances are, you're right, but i can dream.

if it does become obvious it's not coming (ie: press statement stating such), then i can still go buy them later.

Actually, the lost levels wasn't made by Miyamoto, but our Mario 2 (originally Doki Doki Panic and later released in Japan as Super Mario USA) was made by Miyamoto.

IMO that makes it the real Mario 2.

I think i will buy it, i have a classic controller and spare points in my bank and it should last a few hours, plus it's Mario.

Really? I never knew that.

So did Miyamoto make Doki Doki Panic, or just the changes that turned it into SMB2/USA?

Either way thats pretty interesting.

EDIT: Nevermind, Wiki'd it. Interesting.

Nintendo will never release all stars when they can milk the cow for all it's worth.

Well they may be milking the cash cow, but I'm with Obs. Call me a graphics snob but i'm not shelling out unless we get the Purdy versions!
I'm not saying you won't get the 'spit shine' versions, i'm just saying you won't get the all-stars 4 in 1(or 5 in 1)pack

Super Mario Bros 2 in the western world was Doki Doki Panic! It doesnt really matter who makes them, Capcom made the Oracle Zelda games, does that mean they are not real Zelda games? No, the CD-I games are not real Zelda games

Super Mario Bros 2 (lost levels) was the sequel on the Famicom, later Nintendo thought that game was too hard for the western world so they took Doki Doki Panic and put Mario characters in and called it Super Mario Bros 2.
