Opera beta coming to the Wii on December 22nd

Wii News | Pricing and final release confirmed.
Nintendo UK has confirmed that the Opera browser will be coming to Wii’s all over the continent on December the 22nd. The forecast channel just launched so it seems Nintendo is keen to give everyone a very merry Christmas.

“In addition to providing innovative and exciting new ways to play, Wii also offers further services and entertainment for all the family. This newest Wii Menu Channel is just the latest example of how we are doing this” says Nintendo of Europe Marketing Director, Laurent Fischer. “Our software brings the power and reach of the Internet to the hottest video game system available,” says Scott Hedrick, Executive Vice President, Devices at Opera Software. “Wii’s unique interface adds a new dimension to our browser, making it a useful tool that the whole family will enjoy operating with ease.”

Nintendo also shed some light on the cost of the browser when it is fully launched in March. The final version of the browser will be available in March, 2007 for free. After June the browser will be able to purchase from the Wii Shop Channel for 500 points, which is very reasonable indeed.

Nintendo also confirmed the browser will support flash, there is no news yet on an Australian date for the browser, but we'll be bugging Nintendo for the information shortly.

This plus the news of the Hudsen games(Wing island and Kororinpa) being release around Feb/March 23rd was great news to wake up to this morning. Shame its only a BETA, better than nothing though.

Are we also getting the News Channel on the 23rd? It's like the Christmas before Christmas

500 points for the Web Browser from June onwards is definetly very reasonable. Considering they're giving it for free anyway, then to charge a hefty price is just stupid (for the consumer). Good on you Ninty. Lets see you make some good competativeness against Xbox Live.

wow, after hearing that metroid and mario might not be around until Q4 2007 i was a little pissed but this really reinstates my faith in good ol' ninty... the web browser's gonna be so awesome, although hopefully loading a new page doesn't take as long as it does with the wii shop channel.

Nice to hear confirmation that the full version of the browser is going to be released for free, and not go from free-beta straight into paid-final. icon_smile.gif

I'm sure this is going to be extremely useful to me... provided it's reasonably fast to load... icon_kero.gif

Yeah, because nothing regains favour in a video game company (that keeps holding off on releasing games) like a web browser.

Well, at least the fact that they are keeping the Wii up-to-date is a good sign. They seem to care.

^ i personally see no evidence that releasing a browser is an indication of caring.
