Wii is the UK's fastest selling videogames console ever

Wii News | Beats the 360 comfortably.
Nintendo and ChartTrack have confirmed to GameIndustry.Biz that the Wii has become the fastest selling videogames console ever, with 105,000 consoles already sold.

In comparison, the Gamecube had sales of 52,000 consoles in the first weekend after launch and the Xbox 360 stood at 70,000 units. The Wii is so popular that the console sold 50,000 units within the first 12 hours. Nintendo Australia have kept pretty quiet about the console's performance in Australia, but the barren shelves appear to indicate the console has been just as "big" down under. I'm so glad I finally got to use that joke.

Sweet... well deserved. icon_smile.gif There must've been about 60 people who turned up at the shop I was queuing in, the majority of whom got turned away when they announced they only had 28 consoles (one of only two midnight launches in the whole region though). I hear most other stores launching at 7/8am had like 4-10.

Wonder what the odds are on the second wave selling out just as fast.

Yet more nice sales. Hope it won't be too hard for me to pick up one in Australia soon...

In comparison, the PSP managed to shift 185,000 units in its first four days, while the DS managed to shift 87,000. I guess after that the PSP just stopped selling ha? icon_razz.gif

Bizarre. icon_lol.gif
Having this happen to a Nintendo console in the UK again is really weird, still can't believe it's actually happening icon_lol.gif

Well, still yet to be seen how well it does in the long-term, but this is a great start at least icon_smile.gif

It's not as promising as it sounds - for a start, there's still only 50,000 Wii units in UK homes. And news has reached UK retailers today that getting more Wiis before Christmas is "unlikely", though there may be a handful. I'm increasingly thinking that Nintendo should have launched here when it had a bit more stock prepared.

Huh? It's well over 100,000 now, 50,000 was only the first 12 hours.

So that's 10% of the Gamecube's install base in the UK in two days.

Yea, my bad - 110,000 now I believe. Dunno why I said 50,000 (probably that first-12-hours figure stuck in my head). But I still think the fact the UK will be getting next to no units between now and Christmas pretty much stinks.

Good old Nintendo Aus PR... Just as compitent as ever!

I love Nintendo gear I just wish they could get there act together... One of the stores in Brisbane said they weren't getting any more shipments (of wiis or accessories) until 22nd Jan. I hope that isn't true... It would make it hard to make it the "Must have Christmas Item" if you can't get any...

Good on ya Lord Halo Nerd for witty, inspiring and general well thought out and lengthy comments.
You're an asset to the community here.
I always enjoy going through the inane banter when all I want to do is read what people have to say about about the thread topic with garbage infused into it making me wanna read on.

True, but at least it came out this year...

There's supposed to be a shipment to Australia next week, so maybe the UK will get one too?
