Wii officially launched in Australia

Wii News | Now including images direct from Nintendo.
It's been less than four months since Nintendo announced when the Wii would be available in Australia, but the wait has seemed longer. At the stroke of Midnight on Thursday the 7th of December the Wii officially launched in Australia.

European gamers won't have to wait long, the Wii will be available in just under 12 hours. In the short time we've had with the console we've been able to confirm the Australian Virtual Console titles, see which titles have been delayed and suss out the PAL conversions for the Virtual Console titles.

In Australia the Wii is just about everywhere right now, despite the fact that Nintendo were predicting shortages it seems like there will be enough consoles to go around... for now. We're not entirely sure how long the consoles will be around for though so if you're after one we advise you don't get lazy.

Our staff members attended the midnight launch at Toys R Us Moore Park and it seems Wii Fever has certainly caught on, we've taken a few images from the event and they can be found in the media panel. Stay tuned to PALGN, we'll have reviews of the biggest titles up shortly, in the meantime why don't you check out our hardware review and buyer's guide?

Update: Nintendo has sent through images from the Chadstone launch, where there were "Dress-Up as Link" contests as well as Wii Tennis tournaments, looks pretty chaotic.

Went down to my K-mart to get one and the visual/audio section was so busy i could hardly move, so I went home, maybe i'll come back after xmas when all the shopping frenzy is over.
I did notice though that Zelda was not on the shelf.

Check out their offers!

If you’re going to buy a second Wii remote you should pick up Wii play + Wii remote for $5 more than the $59.95 Wii remote on its own.

I’ll head off soon. icon_cool.gif

Picked up mine today from Big W, they had no POS material and only had COD3 and Zelda available. They said the rest of the games were supposed to have been shipped last night and should arrive sometime today.

Picked up Wii Play, Red Steel, and Zelda at Target. They only had Zelda (6-7x), COD3 (3x), Red Steel (2x) They didn't have any POS material either.

Looks like it might be a few days till games/more games become available in real numbers.

The Adelaide Toys'r'Us launch was hell on earth. I got there at about 11pm and only got out a bit after 4am. There was no music or anything and it was rediculously hot. At least me and my friends got drunk and played Wii Sports for five hours afterwards, although I feel a bit warped this afternoon.

Oh, is it out already? Seams like only last week when the price was revealed and I decided that it was an overpriced toy.

Picked one up ready to buy one yesterday, and then had a look at the games....seriously the only one I could see that I wanted was Zelda, looked on the back....nearly threw up from the screenshots....put the Wii box and game down and bought some movies.

I might wait a little while till I pick it up as it really is very underwhelming what you can currently get for the machine. I think I really need to pick it up with atleast 2 or 3 games because if I get Zelda and i'm not that impressed then I might get turned off the machine bigtime, but hopefully with a couple of other games it'll hold my interest.

You nearly "Threw up" at the screenies? The graphics are on par with a top quality Xbox title, which still can look fairly decent. I can't see why you think technical graphics are so important.... just so you know the art direction is quite beautiful in TLP.

Yeah, you're being too shallow, ugh. Graphics don't mean everything, and TP is one of the better lloking games. It looks great in motion, and is excellent to play. The use of the Wiimote speaker is fantastic. icon_smile.gif

I agree ugh.

The lack of anything bar zelda is really holding me back.I know i'll have a blast with it(zelda) though, but the wii simply needs more 'meaty' games to pique my interest.

The fact it is backwards compatable though with the gc(and 100% as well, not semi-backwards like the 360) softens the blow somewhat.

I am liking the positive things people here are saying about the controls in general-the opinions of respected members on this board holds more weight then any overseas reviewer.

Yea unfortunately i've had a 360 since launch and really anything less is gonna look crap...sad but true....also i'm a graphics ****/whore/tart.... it's basically all I care about as long as the controls are solid.

I do admit I really must see the game running (haven't even seen any vids of it yet)....but yea those muddy textures were really horrible. I'm thinking they should've stuck to the cartoony style because the tech hasn't gotten much better and maybe they would've had a bit more flexibility with the graphics.

Anyways I am getting one...I was just turned off yesterday so I tried to buy DOAX2 but they didn't have that either.

Actually that award would go to Gears of War. And I don't care about some tinny little speaker on the remote and still not too happy they've stuck with midi. I imagined a huge epic score like in Shadow of Colossus would be the order of the day....but NAH.....good old stubbord Nintendo.

^ hehe....yea I knew you'd say that...you and your anti-wind wakerness. I actually liked Wind Waker the best (yes even more than a link to the past)....but i'm a sucker for cartoony games done right. What I really hate are japanese games which try and be realistic....I mean they can't even get their own characters to look japanese (always some quasi-western/japanese look....like in mangas/anime etc)...so I just don't really trust them with that 'realistic' look.

I do pretty much wanna just pickup the Wii because Super Mario 64 is available from the Virtual Console.....so any day now when I cave i'll be raving on about how good Zelda is. You watch...

What makes that harder to swallow is the trailers had full orchestral score. icon_sad.gif Oh well, its still Zelda so I'm sure it'll be fine anyway. Heck, the music on Wind Waker sounded fine and it was only midi.
