30,000 Wii pre-orders for Australia

Wii News | Time to get nervous if you haven't pre-ordered.
The Herald Sun has revealed that more than 30,000 Australians have preordered the Wii. With the console now only days away from release, we're starting to wondering when we'd hear something about the pre-order figures.

The Xbox 360 sold 30 000 units in four days, so the Wii is likely to become one of the quickest-selling consoles in Australia, which is definitely good news for Nintendo. We'll be kicking off our Wii reviews in the next few days, so stay tuned to PALGN for the latest.

actually i waited until i tried it before i ordered one.

i was actually very close to ordering one before the roadtrip thing, then reports came in of the controllers not being up to scratch, so i didn't.

but i tried Red Steel, WiiSport and Play and Zelda the other day and they more than convinced me.

Red Steel convinced me not to buy Red Steel though. nothing to do with the controller though, just didn't feel right.

kudos for waiting though. it's definately the right move if you aren't convinced. as for being bored of hearing about it, i kinda agree, but i got bored of hearing about the X360 when it launched, and i imagine i'll be bored of the PS3 when it launches.

realitybites - chill out, it wasn't a personal attack, just a discussion.

And about the 20-30% of Gamecube owners 'upgrading' on the first day - that's actually a huge number. The 360 has been out for months, and only about 15% of original xbox owners have upgraded even now.

Basically all I'm saying is that the Wii is already a lot more successful then the Gamecube. It's already sold over 10% of the GCN's lifetime in Japan, and by the end of the year may already be at 20% worldwide. From this point it will be pretty hard for it to flop.

Burnt = 6-12 month delays in games coming out in Australia

Burnt = Third party ports that had sub PS2 level graphics and stripped additional features on a system almost equal to Xbox

Burnt = Third party ports that were up to SIX MONTHS later than PS2 and Xbox counterparts (Hello, Lego Star Wars, Tomb Raider etc.)

Burnt = Seeing all the really good multi-platform franchises leave, or not even turn up on Cube (Mercenaries, Burnout 3 onward, Black etc. etc.)

Burnt = Finding that only a handful of shops sold GameCube games and that most of those mauled you on price

All of those are very real reasons for having personal reservations about Wii, and even more concerning when considering buying an Australian version of the console.

People seem to be quick to dismiss the gamecube as a horrible console because it financially flopped it had nothing to do with the console itself, more its managment.
I disagree with you there. i read somewhere that nintendo made more money with the gamecube than sony made with the playstation. even if it didnt at least it made money which is more than you can say about the xbox (it lost several billion)

With the exception of this one...

which was definately not a problem exclusive to Nintendo, littlemo does make some good points. Whats interesting to note, however, is how easily every single one of those will change if the Wii is successful - if its successful, then it will have more sales and be in more stores (therby generating even MORE sales), and, if it has potential for alot of sales, games should appear on the Wii as well, at the same time as their PS3 and X360, which will then of course mean more sales, and that will mean their sequels will appear, which will, of course, once again, mean more sales.

Ninty will need to lift their game to help this happen, though.

True, Sony have been a big culprit with that, which is why importing is so popular. Let's hope Nintendo can try to change that this gen, but it's not so good so far, judging from the launch titles. They need to do a bit better.

Yep. We are receiving our stock on Tuesday with Head Office analysing anymore pre-orders that were taken after Mon / Tues; comparing it with what they have allocated us, and shipping more units (express) to the stores if they are needed for a Wednesday top up before launch.

As far as Wii nay-sayers go. I agree that its hard to take onboard.

As the motto goes "Playing is Believing". It couldnt be more true. I wasnt really taken in by hype or anything before I actually held a Wii-Mote. I thought the idea was novel but was not convinced. Playing the unit is what sold me. The genuine gameplay is 100% and that's what I believe has grabbed everyone's attention. Nintendo are doing what they do best - hitting homeruns from leftfield. Always the constant innovator.

Roll on Thursday!

DVDCrave have almost finished allocating stock, my orders are 70% filled. They still need to allocate my 3rd Wiimote and Rayman. Zelda, and Wii Play have been filled, anmd so has the nunchuk to go with the 3rd remote. icon_smile.gif Thursday is getting closer!
