eGames 06: WarioWare Smooth Moves Hands On

Wii Feature | We check Wario's smooth moves.
At the eGames and Entertainment Expo in Melbourne we recently had an opportunity to go hands on with WarioWare: Smooth Moves, WarioWare: Smooth Moves was originally expected to be a launch title alongside the Wii, but is set for release early next year. After a quick go of the game we came away very impressed and it's clear that WarioWare: Smooth Moves is going to be one of the titles that showcases the wide range of possibilities of the Wii controller.

As with the previous WarioWare titles, you'll get need lightning fast reflexes to be able to pass the game. At the beginning of each mini game the game will actually inform you what you need to do to pass the challenge, this may include turning the Wii mote on it's side, placing it on your head or even using it as a steering wheel. It's probably likely to take a little while to recognise exactly what the game requires you to do, because if you don't understand then you're basically guaranteed to fail a challenge.

Oh god, doing this in public is embarassing.

The first game we played required you to hold the Wii mote still whilst attempting to swat a fly, I was still getting used to the controls at the time and was a little bit too slow to react, this meant I actually completely missed the fly. You're only able to lose a certain amount of lives before the game was over, so it wasn't a good beginning. The next mini game I played required me to place the Wii mote on my head and lift the controller up as if I was lifting weights. I fared better in this game and passed.

Feeling pretty confident about myself the next challenge was to hold the Wii mote on its side and balance a cat on a ball. If you tilted the controller to the left the ball would rotate left, if you tilted the controller right then the ball would rotate to the right. I very nearly managed to keep the ball even but unfortunately the cat faced an early demise. I managed to do well enough in all of these challenges to make it to the boss level.

I err... failed miserably at this mini game.

The boss level requires you to hold the Wii controller on it's side. You take control of a car and need to steer it. Along the way you'll come across obstacles, such as monkeys which pop up near the very end of the track. Somehow, (I still don't know exactly how) I actually managed to avoid the monkeys and complete the demo. Despite the fact that I really hadn't gone that well I left still feeling pretty confident about my "lightning quick" reactions.

The best thing about this small demo of WarioWare: Smooth Moves was the fact that it was only a teaser for what the final game will contain. The final game will include more than 200 lightning quick games, if the games we trialled are any indication then there should be a wide variety of moves. All of the cast from the previous WarioWare titles will also be making an appearance, including Wario, Mona, Jimmy, 9-Volt, Orbulon, Dr. Crygor, Master Mantis, Young Cricket, Penny Crygor and more.

Your created Mii character will even make an appearance in mini games and other areas and the game will even include a comprehensive multiplayer mode where two people can play using a single Wii remote and nunchuck. Overall WarioWare: Smooth Moves was very impressive and is sure to be one of the highlights for the Wii in the first few months.

Warioware has always been about what gaming is meant to be... fun

I am so pissed that this has been pushed back

I must say, for when I played it Yesterday, it was rather fun. However, when I was balancing that brush on my hand, I got interference and my hand movements weren't recognized. I was kinda bummed that not many people actually attempted to do the Hula as well. icon_sad.gif

Edit: Skipping the line with Vispi was not cool. icon_razz.gif

Everyone did the hula at the Wii Party, just spinning the control takes away the entire point. The main problem with the Warioware series is the length, you know that if I can finish a game in a reasonable amount of time then it's not hard/long enough.

True, that's the premise. icon_smile.gif I agree with Luke's impressions of the game, great fun! It's such a shame that it's not a launch title, I'd get it.
