Japanese Wii launch units revealed

Wii News | Trouncing the PS3 launch.
Nintendo has recently reported to BBC News that the number of Wii consoles available to Japanese consumers at launch will be 400 000. This is four times the amount of PS3 units available for the November 11 launch in Japan.

While the argument can be made that the PS3 costs far more to manufacture and therefore can't be processed as quickly, the fact is that 400 000 happy Japan gamers will have their hands on the Wii, regardless of the differences in price between the two consoles. However, the PS3 has completely sold out, and whether or not this will happen to the Wii as quickly is unknown. The Wii launches in Japan on December 2.

For reference, no official numbers have been quoted for the US Wii launch on November 19, nor the Australian and UK launch on December 7 and 8 respectively. If it is any indication of worldwide supply patterns, Nintendo has committed to providing at least 4 million units across the globe before the end of 2006. Less than 3 weeks for the Australian Wii launch - but any PS3 enthusiasts will be waiting for several months yet.

In Japan, 400 000 units = shortage

More units being avaiable means it will easily beat the PS3 in numbers

Microsoft has so far shipped over 10 million 360's and have since sold half of them
so 5-6 million is about the goal they need to get
