Wii Play Preview

Wii Preview | Everybody's second game purchase?
When the Wii was first shown in playable form at E3 this year, as well as showing fully fledged games such as the latest Mario, Metroid and Zelda, Nintendo created a bunch of mini-games and tech demos designed to show off the possibilities of the new control scheme, much like the DS's first E3. But unlike the DS tech demos, which were either abandoned or further developed into single titles, the Wii will come bundled with a collection of five of these games as Wii Sports, and most of the others have been collected in this second, more openly themed package, Wii Play.

The first and most important thing to mention about Wii Play is exactly what the package consists of. The game is set at a (semi) budget price of $79.95 in Australia (it's the full £39.99 in the UK unfortunately), but for that you not only get the software, but a bundled Wii remote, RRP $69.95/£29.99. At that price – especially in Australia - Wii Play is tremendous value. The fact that many of the games included look as fun as anything on the console just sweetens the deal.

Did you know Duck Hunt is the fourth highest selling game of all time?

Wii Play has much in common with Wii Sports – it heavily supports the 'Mii' avatar creation feature, and many of the games included are also sports based – although most bear a stronger resemblance to the mini-games featured in DS games such as Super Mario 64 DS and Project Rub. Every game is either one or two player, and while there is a single player 'career' mode of sorts with a medal system for high scores, two player is obviously where most of the action will be. A nice clean menu allows you to select your game from an Apple toolbar inspired list. A single line of instruction on how to play is shown on the screen, and then you're thrown right in. Now on with the games:

  • Shooting Range - a modern version of Duck Hunt, hopefully without your 'friend' the dog [who would now be over twenty years old anyway -Ed]. Hands on reviews suggest that using the remote in this game isn't really like a light gun, but more like a 3D mouse. You move a cursor on the screen, but don't have to point directly where you're aiming – just tilt the remote and use the cursor to see where you're aiming. Light gun veterans may have to get used to it.

  • Find Mii – Some sort of Where's Wally/Waldo/Warioware thing involving looking for your Mii in a crowd. Not much is known about this game so far, but creating a more outrageous Mii will surely help your chances!

Air hockey is the best thing ever made.

Air hockey is the best thing ever made.

  • Table Tennis – a decent looking table tennis game where you use the Wii remote like a paddle to hit the ball. It's faster and actually looks more in depth then the obviously similar Wii Tennis. In an interesting twist, crowd members (composed of other Mii avatars) will gather round the table as the game heats up. A great game to include as part of compilation, nobody would buy a game that was just table tennis, would they?

  • Pose Mii – A Warioware type mini-game – in this one you aim the remote as well twist it to align your character with a silhouette. This one very much reminds us of a DS mini game.

  • Laser Hockey – Sort of a 'Vertical Air Hockey'. Tilting and waving the remote moves your Laser Hockey mallet – although we're not sure what angle you hold it at right now. All the tactics of Air hockey seem to be present, such as picking the right rebound angle to get behind your opponent, and 'cradling' the puck to set up a smash. If this game is even half as good as real air hockey it could be the best game in the package.

  • Billiards – a much more realistic simulation then most other Wii sports games so far, in Billiards you are given a behind the ball perspective to take your shot, and you pull back and punch forward the Wii remote to strike the ball. The first person perspective reminds us of the simple sports (like Frisbee) in Nintendogs, but this would obviously require much more precision. We'll have to wait and see on this one.

  • Fishing – looks about as in-depth as the fishing in The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, but with a bizarre Paper Mario like visuals. You pull back the Wii remote and fling it forward to 'cast', and reel the fish in when you feel a tug (from the remote's in-built force feedback). May be the game to get your dad to try out – before you know it he's be saying 'one more go – I just wanna get that blue one!'

Something for everyone, even boring people who like fishing

  • Charge – a bull riding sim. No, really. You hold the Wii mote sideways like handlebars, and steer a bull through a field. If you topple a scarecrow in the field, you'll get bonus points.

  • Tanks – with many other classic game riffs coming out for the new control scheme (Pong, Duck Hunt etc) it's about time the old Atari game Combat was dusted off and re-imagined. In Tanks you can both move and aim with the remote to try and knock out your opposing player. Apparently the shells can bounce off walls.

Nintendo could easily have thrown all these games on the Wii Sports disc, but while it does seem to be a ploy to get Wii owners to purchase at least one extra controller, almost everyone would agree that it's a good idea to have one anyway. Even if only a few of the games in Wii play end up being any good, at $10 (or the steeper £10 in the UK) on top of an essential second controller purchase, Wii Play will most likely be a no-brainer purchase for many new Wii owners.
Overall:
It's effectively $10 Australia, so if you are buying a Wii and have ever met another person, get this instead of a controller as your second purchase.

do you think that if you were to buy this package, keep the Wiimote and sell the game(wii play) back to say...EB you would get a considerable sum of money? Keep in mind its RRP is $79 AUD

No. Unless they're stupid... well stupider.

It's $10 don't worry.

Nintendo Sucked Me Into this deal already, I've Already got it pre-ordered and paid off along with my Wii Console, I thought It would be stupid to get a Wii and not get at least 2 controllers, after all it's a family console and plus at extra $10 bucks you can't afford not to get this pack

Nintendo, Smart move making people buy an extra wii remote like this!!!

I really don't think they can do that.

uHH not mine! Infact if I had my way Wii Sports and Wii Play would never even come anywhere near my console. I mean just look at the generic names...what next? Wii fun? icon_rolleyes.gif
Wii Music, Wii motorsport. Not a game I would buy, but I have to admit £10 is pretty good for value for money. Its like those generic crappy yet good you get in Xbox live. But the gimmicky console is definatly being thrown here.

I preordered this when I first saw it. £10 for a bunch of tech demos is a bit steep, but it should be a laugh multiplayer.

Now I know what's in it, it sounds awesome. Although why doesn't Duck Hunt (ugh Shooting Gallery, that's worse than ExciteTruck - although at least I can understand shying away from shooting ducks what with all the animal rights activists about these days) control like a light gun, is the Wii capable of that kind of control? The light gun shell suggests it is - so what the hell? Surely this would be more fidely as a result (isn't the point of this to take in more non-gamers?).

lol ^^ i'm sure the non-gamers is what they're aiming for..

Duckhunt, Air Hockey, Billiards, Table Tennis...Lucky!

Wii Play & Wii Sports plus 2 controllers equals an entire holiday of party fun...especially since i live on a res college. I can see many nights of drunken air hockey and billiards without having to go to a shabby nightclub and get annoyed by feral chicks slapping your ass every 5 minutes when you try and play pool. I was tempted to break the cue over one of their heads last saturday.

But i really think this will get a lot more people buying the console...i was worried with the $399 price...but for $478 you get 2 games, 2 controllers and the console...it seems like a sweet deal. Plus chuck in Twilight Princess OR Red Steel and you have already got a nice collection for under $600. Still cheaper than the standard 360 deal at most places.

looks fun, $10 with the remote I was going to buy anyway? Bargain.
Seconded

By the way, I'm really getting tired of people dissing these game when they haven't even tried the game or before. I mean unless you didn't have any friends to play along with or anything, then fair enough. I don't see why you would pick it up then. Though Nintendo as offered these games to be cheap as hell. Wii sport: Free with Wii, Wii Play: = $10 more if you get a Wiimote. (Which I'm sure 9/10 of us with pick up another one somewhere along the line)Point is, pick up & play games like these are the best to play along with friends. How ever often does one of your random friends come over & when you play game go & pick up Call of Duty or whatever when they know that your gonna beat them? I know mine don't, we always come back to Super Smash Brothers or Wario Ware, or even Pac Man Vs. Which lasts us the whole day at times. I just see so much entrainment between friends in these games.
Yea have you ever thought maybe some people just aren't into fads and gimmicks?! I can see you obviously like that Mii stuff but I can draw better than that mate so it doesn't impress me. Also all my friends (except for Xcs:sive) aren't into the japanese fad type stuff like super smash bros melee and that crap...so they wouldn't play it even if I wanted them to.

Maybe there's a lot of entertainment for YOU and YOUR friends....but ME and MY friends prefer games like Halo, Baulders Gate: Dark Alliance.....you know games with a bit of depth and story? If I wanna just have some quick random fun it's just as easy (and a lot healthier) for my friends and I to run up to the sports club up the road. That way we can also have a couple of beers, perv on some chix, maybe even play some pokies, not to mention the huge range of games and sports facilities they have up there.

Each to their own I guess eh?

Also i'm spending the least amount of money possible on Nintendo stuff from now on so $10 for this game is waaaay too much imo. If it came free with the Wiimote...meh...

I see what you're getting at ugh, but smash bros? That's nothing like WiiPlay or WiiSports man! I'm sure most would agree that smash bros melee isn't just a japanese fad game and that it has the replayibility of games like Halo.

the only reason i wouldnt get this would be if it was funded by osama bin laden.

will any wii play games use the nun-chuck and how do u find out if it needs it? won't the fishing game need it to reel the fish in like zelda?
Taken from Planet Gamecube:
Quote
In Fishing, paper cutout fish swim in a kiddie pool, and players use the remote like a fishing rod to lure and capture the fish. The game almost seems like a joke after playing the fishing demo in The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess where you actually have to reel the fish in.
So it doesn't sound like you use the nun-chuck for the fishing game in Wiiplay. They don't mention it being used in any of the tiles they demoed, but I wouldn't take that as confirmation one way or the other.

Yea I know....it's a sad story behind that one. I bought it along with my cube at launch but my friends really really (and i'm talking REALLY) didn't like it! I was willing to give it a chance and to unlock a few things (especially after reading the positives on the multiplayer aspects)....but they weren't gonna have a bar of it....and really I didn't enjoy the game at all in one player and honestly multiplayer wasn't the greatest experience but I could see how it could've evolved into a bit of a fanatical thing....but yea....unfortunately without the friends to play it with I had to return it. Anyways I shouldn't slag that game and I agree it's not a fad type game (maybe a couple of the unlockable characters are) but yea I really shouldnt've called it faddy or gimmicky that was really meant more for that Mii stuff I keep seeing around and also because a huge feature of SSBM was all the different characters you can get with a little bit of a different look here and there and not much else....that's basically a fad cuz it's not really what kirby can do it's more that fact that he's there sort of thing. I was out of line about Smash Bros though....it's just that uber cute/kiddy look that turns me and lot of my friends off I guess.

kinda undecided.

it's a decent price considering it has the Wii-mote included, but i would rather have had this bundled with the Wii itself so i could write off Wii Sport.

it would be a good buy to have to show off the system to someone, but i don't think i'd get too much out of it beyond that.

i suppose one benefit to getting it would be when there are those %age off sales, excluding game hardware. this should be classified as software, and therefore would result in a slightly discounted wii-mote or a free game.

The Wii registers where the controller is in 3D space, not where it is pointing, so it can't act like a light gun.

So in layman's term, it basically can only sense your movements not your position. Its very similar to thumbsticks I guess in FPS, thats if your into those.

So im assuming it only comes with the wiimote and not the nunchuck extension?

Come to think of it does the nunchuck come bundled in with the wiimote itself normally or is it a separate purchase?

The difference between the wiimote and thumbsticks is that the thumbstick will cause the screen to move at a predetermined speed once you hold the thumbstick as far as you can. The wiimote however is only limited by the speed at which you can turn it, much like using a computer mouse for FPS in which the faster you move the mouse, the faster you turn, therfore short movements can result in large on screen motions.

The wiimote also registers rotations on the various axis as well as tracking movements.

Actually Thumbsticks such as the ps2 dual shock, had tilt sensitivity so in a game you could walk if you tilt it slightly and run. I guess Wii remote does extends to that way, adding greater sensitivity.

Nope - Nunchuck is a seperate purchase. I believe the pricing is something along the lines of $70 for the Wiimote and $20-$30 for the Nunchuck? Something like that.
I'm sure someone will be able to correct me icon_smile.gif
