Ethernet Kit for Wii

Wii News | Don't have a wireless router?
Late yesterday, Nintendo confirmed to CVG that an Ethernet Kit will be released for the Wii which will enable gamers to connect their Wii to the internet using a standard-based internet router that doesn’t have wireless support.

This news comes as concerns had been raised over the lack of an Ethernet port on the Wii console which would mean that the only way for the Wii to connect to the internet was via a wireless router. However, now non-wireless internet users can rest assure that they will be playing Wii games online in the near future.

For those of you that already own the Nintendo WiFi USB Connector for your DS, some further good news was announced. Apparently, the same device can interface with the Wii allow you to connect to the internet. In other words, you're set to go.

At this stage, no pricing or release dates were announced but we'll keep you informed on any new developments.

I was thinking about this a couple weeks ago and then found myself buying a 108mbs Netgear router for $25, what a steal!!! But it's a good idea they brought an adaptor out for the people without wireless.

If it turns out to be more than 50 bucks, they can go get stuffed.

Thankfully I already have the Wi-Fi USB adaptor, so I'm set.

This is how it should have been with the 360, wireless out of box, ethernet extra.

The extra $130 for that 360 wireless adaptor is a rip.....

^ Wireless sucks though as not many routers support 802.11a (a > g > b), and I think the Wii/DS are 802.11g only. Compared to the 360's abg dongle, but still $130 is crazy.

I bought one of those for the 360, better than running a 30m ethernet cable around my house.

Smart move on Nintendo's behalf imo.

That's nice that the Nintendo Wi-Fi USB Connector is compatible with the Nintendo Wii. I've just saved some money.

I've got a router which supports g, so I'm pretty happy. I get great speeds with my DS, so my Wii should work nicely too. icon_smile.gif

^ As I've said in another thread g is easily limited by interfearance, while a usually runs close to maximum throughput. However it never really took off because it can run properly in the US because they have different RF licencing than the rest of the world icon_rolleyes.gif

The DS doesn't like my Wireless router so I ended up buying a dongle. I was expecting it to work with the Wii so I'm glad they've confirmed that. That being said, I still might buy the Ethernet adapter because I'd rather it if I didn't have to turn the PC on to use my Wii online.

If it's anything like my wireless router, you may need to update the firmware. My DS was allergic to my DLink router (can't remember the model number, think it was DSL-604) until I updated it to version 2 firmware.

My Router is a Belkin, and I've never had any DS trouble at all. My DS will connect wirelessly from anywhere in my house. icon_smile.gif It's a modem/router combo, so I don't have to turn on my computer at all, which is nice.

It's a Netgear router (I forget the number), but it was flagged as not being compatable on Nintendo's website.

Ok I've never really done the online thing with a console, so....how does this work. Can I connect my Wii straight to my modem via ethernet?

If so, this is excellent news.
