Zelda control issue cleared up

Wii News | One game, one set of controls.
There is still a lot of information that hasn't yet been revealed to us about the GameCube's swansong and the Wii's hallmark launch title. In fact, The Legend of Zelda: Twlight Princess doesn't even have a concrete release date yet. However, it seems that a curly bit of information has now been set in stone.

Until now, it hasn't been clear as to whether the Wii version of Twilight Princess will support the GCN controller, as there have been quite a few conflicting reports. While visiting Nintendo's annual Camp Hyrule event, it seems that IGN have managed to get Nintendo's senior vice president of marketing and corporate communications, George Harrison, to spill the beans.

"The GCN controller will be able to play the GCN version on the Wii console, but will not be able to play the Wii version," Harrison said. So essentially, if you have the Wii version, you will only be using the Wii-mote.

While this isn't the most revolutionary nor surprising news that we've heard, it is disappointing that players require a completely different version of the game if they either want to try out or are unhappy with the control scheme. Other than a slight visual upgrade for the Wii, it is expected that the control scheme will be the most substantial difference between the two versions.

Very dissapointing.

If it were, say, Metroid, there would be no question - the Wii controller will be infinitely better for that game. But it's supposed to be the last ever 'old school' Zelda. At least there is the GCN version I suppose.

Than again, we'll just have to try it when it comes out, maybe the Wiimote works brilliantly.

This is ridiculous! As if i'm gonna buy the GCN version over the Wii version?! Also I want to use a normal controller aswell! Arrgghh!! This is crap!!

Hopefully they can incorporate it before it launches.

Is this because of the native support for the wii-mote in the wii version.
And will there be any difference in the GCN version.
Sounds logical if the wii version is optimized specifically for the wii-mote.
Understandable that there is no GCN control support in the wii version as to have two different control schemes that are very different in layout and function would be a nightmare to implement.

What I love is when people hail the Wiimote as a revolution in gaming control then complain that the Wii version of Zelda won't have traditional controls.

^Thats a good point.A big fat dose of reality hurts......

F#*@ you Nintendo!

^And Cerebral, the way I see it is that the Wiimote won't be as good for games like Zelda as we know them, say to the traditional controller. Which is why (Miyamoto?) said that this would be the last Zelda as we know it. I allways assumed that Nintendo would slightly alter the control scheme (not just the input mechanism) to better suit this new type of game.

The main problem I (and many others) have is that this game was built from the ground up for the cube, with Wii features tacked on. My anticipation for this title decreases by the day... icon_sad.gif

Just get the GC version. I fail to see how any of this is an issue, from what I hear the only differences are the Wii version uses the Wiimote and offers widescreen. That's it. If you don't want to use the Wiimote, buy the GC version. I really don't see how any of this is an issue to people. Feel free to elaborate on your dismay though.

If the cube version is ready - release it! Don't hold that up just so they can add on Wii controlls. Also, I would like to play with the Wiimote, but would prefer to play with the cube controller. Paying $200 (Wii and GCN version) for that is robbery imo.

Why not?

How is the Wii control scheme inferior to the GCN's one? In the end, you control Link with the analogue stick, attack with the B button and interact using the A button on both versions.

The only differences are aiming (and after everything I hear about the wiimote being the next step towards a mouse as far as precision of aiming goes) and thrusting the controller to Shield bash/throw an item. How else would you expect them to control the game?

Honestly, it feels like one whole backpeddle on the Wii remote all of a sudden.

You tell 'em Baiken.

I reckon it'll be fun with the Wii-mote. However, as someone that play DDR for a living, I MAY be biased.

I was hoping to use the Wiimote as a sword, the nunchuck as a shield in the next Zelda game (after TP). Who knows, I may (hopefully) be wrong, but all I can do atm is speculate and go by what others have said. And I have read a fair bit of comments of people (E3 atendees) saying that the Wii controll didn't live up to the cube control scheme (in concern to TP).

I never expected the Wiimote to be be able to play most current-gen controlled games as well as current gen controller could, just like the SNES pad is better than the cube or GBA for playing SNES games and the 64 pad is better for playing some 64 games than the cube controller.

I was thinking (all of this is specualtion that I've somehoe conceived) that the Wiimote would be better and add more fun to playing games, that are different to many now and have been designed from the base up with the Wiimote in mind.

All of that aside, even if the Wii version is significantly better, I still think it's poor form to not include both styles of control.

I was going to complain, but really, the Wii-mote may be okay for this game. I am disappointed however. If I don't like the way the game feels on Wii, I'll just take it back to EB and get a refund. Or I can borrow my friend's GCN version cause he's getting both.

What The.........Who would seriously complain about freehand controls

People who want to downgrade are just plain stupid, I say point and shoot is the best control scheme ever, people who buy a Wii and want the gamecube controller seriously need to forget about buying a Wii and stick to their Gamecubes

What are people going to do with metroid 3, Nintendo won't be making a Gamecube version of that!! IMO I think Nintendo should have just stuck with a Wii version of Twilight Princess although Nintendo did promised us almost 2 years ago that Twilight Princess would be hitting the Gamecube, I guess the Wii came at the right time and is fortunate enough to have its own intuitive Version with AWSOME FREEHAND Controls

Also just to clear a few things up, The Gamecube version has major differences compared with Wii

These are the only differences i know of on the Wii version

Wii Version:
*Free Hand Controller, utilizes Wii Remote and nunchuku controller
*Widescreen 16:9 Support
* Improved Texture Filtering, Anti-Aliazing (removes jagged edges)
*Improved Smoke, Shadow effects
*Support for Game Updates Via WiiConnect24 Service

Game Updates is a good thing, The Gamecube version is stuck if it turns out to have a glitch or two, although I have to say Nintendo always have the best de-bugged games on the planet

DUN DUN DUUUUUUUUN! Thats gotta be a sign of the apocalypse.

Much like Qbert, I personally can't wait to play a Wii Zelda built from the ground up with Wii controls - however this is not that game. This game has been designed and built around the Cube's controller (by the looks of it, anyway - prove me wrong, Ninty), and hence I believe that it'll be alot better on its native console.

"So essentially, if you have the Wii version, you will only be using the Wii-mote. "

Yikes, that's a bit worrying. However, if the Wiimonte turns out to work as well as it appears to, it shouldn't be much of a problem. The upgraded graphics and effects are a nice bonus for the Wii version, so I'd like to buy it. If the controls suck/are difficult though, I may go with the GCN version, maybe.

"TACKED on controls" tacked on controls?!?!?! i hate that, to me they seem to be improved controls.

Wii version will aslo be upscaled to 480p

I personly dont understand qberts quik dissmisal of the wiimote to play LOZ:TP i mean we realy havent expirienced any thing like that of the wiimote nunckuku combination and so, cant dissmiss it so quikly.

I diddnt hear any complaints from ppl at E3 about the control scheme, more compliments. I am a strong believer in that you cant judge something untill you have expirienced it, i dont know if you have played or used a Wii but if you havent you realy dont have any idea besides that your told or shown.

In some way, this does prove that Nintendo is confident in there new control scheme, and that installs confidence in me. Dont forget that this is nintendo and nintendo doesnt do things in halfs FULL! FULL! FULL! in my mind there is no way this control scheme will be percieved as gimicky (the time they take!!!!!! the time they take!!!!). I am looking forward to this game as many are, and as Sin Ogaris said if you dont want the new controls then get the cube version.

This is Wii why should it have GCN controls???
Yeah, I don't like the term 'tacked on controls' either, but it's technically a true label. TP started off as a GCN title, then became a Wii/GCN title because of the added controller support.

I'll be getting the Wii version for sure anyway (widescreen = very yes), but this news removes my safety net. Not sure I like that. icon_neutral.gif
Maybe there'll still be support for the "Classic" controller?

At this years E3 Nintendo did say that they are going to release The Legend of Zelda Twlight Princess on GameCube & Wii in USA they never did say it was going to be released any where eles on GameCube then the Us icon_razz.gif as for me i can't wait for the Wii version icon_razz.gif xD

When it really comes to the crunch, I'm seeing a lot of people not wanting one fo their favourite franchises to be played with a Wii remote. My original point still stands.

Don't give up on it because it used the Wiimote, people.

If you play and you genuinely don't like it, fair enough, but do you think Ninty would really release a Zelda with a **** control scheme, that takes away from the immersion Zelda game have provided us for years?

I'm convinced that once playing Zelda with the Wiimote becomes natural, playing it on a 'Cube controller would suck.

And why will this be the last Zelda game as we know it?
