Wii will emulate success of DS - Reggie

Wii News | As McGee dismisses PS3 and Xbox 360 as 'mere upgrades'.
In an interview with top-selling US newspaper USA Today, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime has announced that the company's Wii console, due later this year, will match Nintendo's DS handheld in terms of success. Indeed, in Fils-Aime's eyes, the handheld race between Ninty's portable console and Sony's PSP is as good as over, with the Nintendo executive declaring, "We are so far in advance of our handheld competitors they're not even on the map." Currently, the DS leads the PSP in hardware sales in all three main regions - Japan, Europe and the US.

And, if Nintendo's number one cheerleader is to be believed, there's more hurt on the way for Sony and Microsoft, with Reggie confidently predicting that the unique features of the Wii will give it a vital edge in the next-gen race. "Our competitors are both going down the same path. Both believe that more and more performance with a higher and higher price tag are their keys to success," he stated. "What do I see? I think our two competitors will trade share between them, while we go off and grab share in a completely different way."

In other words, the Wii is set to match the impressive popularity of the DS, and according to Fils-Aime, that's because Nintendo embraced a tactic of tapping into new markets when designing the two devices. "[The success of the DS] is all based on a market expansion strategy," he said. "And that's what we're looking to do with home consoles. I'd much rather have the consumer buy a Wii, some accessories, and a ton of games, versus buying any of my competitor's products."

Meanwhile, away from Fils-Aime and his relentless tub-thumping, American McGee (responsible for the likes of gothic PC adventure American McGee's Alice) has become roughly the eight millionth third-party developer to proffer his views on the three next-gen machines from Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo. Speaking in an interview with CVG, McGee argued that Nintendo was all set to "capture the hearts of gamers," whilst Microsoft and Sony were more likely to "stab each other in the neck" when it came to market-share. "The only truly next-gen console out there is the Wii," remarked McGee. "Everything else is just a video card and processor upgrade."

I, for one am not knocking the system for this

I'm knocking the fact that the DS is given credit where it isn't due or deserved.

That's not to say that it's a bad system or whatever, I'm just being realistic.

Neither am I knocking the system, hence why I have one and love it. As Jeremy said, we're being realistic.

I think the DS deserves the credit, the potential is there, perhaps it is the developers who don't deserve the credit? The DS has two screen, a microphone, online play, touch screen and download play avaliable, if a developer can not make an innovative game with that there is something wrong.

EDIT: it sounds like I'm directing this a Jeremy and Frozen, whereas I'm more just putting it out there.

The highest selling DS games worldwide are Nintendogs and Brain Training, and the appeal of both is firmly tied to the touch screen and microphone.

Let's face it, the better games on the DS (New Super Mario, Sonic Rush, Mario Kart, Metroid Prime), either barely use the touch screen at all, or if they do use it, don't use it to the point where the game wouldn't be just as good with either a mouse or a second analog stick.
What games are 'better' is only opinion. Although I personally agree with you about those games being some of the best (I'd also add Phoenix Wright and Ouendan), the sales figures show Nintendogs, Brain Training and Animal Crossing are the most popular games on the DS, although Mario is catching up.

The second part of this statement is a bit silly IMO - most fans would tell you that Metroid's control is far more precise then any stick ever was, and how exactly would you implement mouse control on a handheld? But yeah, FPSes are not new and have been done better, so Metroid is only a new thing if we're talking handheld only

Overall, I agree that many great DS games could have been done on a traditional handheld. But many others like Ouendan, Phoenix Wright (at least Case #5), Brain Training, Nintendogs and Metroid Hunters couldn't have been done on a traditional handheld. If only there was a device out that played both great traditional games and all these new game types. Oh, wait...

All I've seen from the Wii so far is a bunch current gen games (Zelda, Cars, Spongebob), with various actions mapped to a motion sensing device rather than an analog stick.

Go Innovation!!
You just discredited yourself there Nev. If that's all you've seen, you haven't looked very hard.

Developers will make games for PS3/360 because MONEY.
They think the lifespan of Wii is going to be SHORT. Not enough
time for them to develop good titles and make decent profits.
Whereas, the PS3 is going for 10 years.

Look at the PSP vs. DS for instance. DS is selling really well.
Why do you think the marjority of developers NOT develop game for it?

There are more risks associated with the DS than with the PSP.

Are there any company making money from the DS apart from N ????

Not many!
As the Wii's life span is short so is the time to develop a game. 16 months to develop one game is very short and the game is coming along well (red Steel) in the DSs life spn games have been flowing like a stream and that also goes for the PS2, so to say the Wii's life span is too short is just plain ignorance and it shows that you cant rack up a good point.

For Nintendo to draw the conclusion that just because one poduct is successful in one segment automatically gives them the creditentials for another is absurd marketing.

DS is targetted as a mobile console, the games are designed to be quick and easy to play. Short gaming durations. Aimed at 8 to 15 year olds and the female market segment.

Home console market is far more complex beast where online connectivity is more prevalent, complex scenarios, longer duration play, graphics to die for and different gamer segment (18 to 25 year old males).

The area of overlap I see is the party market segment. But if the PS3 and Xbox 360 can offer similar experiences I don't believe people will change. The PS2 completely dominates this space and I suspect most people will automatically go the PS3 believing the experience will be the same.

Nintendo have a history in the living room of completely shafting their loyal fans (especially in PAL territories) which is the exact opposite to their handheld segment. Another fine example of "shafting" is the Wii/GC controller and differing versions of Twilight Princess. Virtually forcing the Nintendo fan to buy the Wii version.

Their "shafting" of fans is why are clearly 3rd on the list of must have consoles.

I'm not convinced the general gamer is going to go after the Wii in the HOME MARKET segment. Only time will tell us and we should know this by Xmas 2007.

"Virtually forcing the Nintendo fan to buy the Wii version."

Not really, they've actually given us a choice, we can play TP, and we don't even have to buy a Wii to play it, if we don't want to. That's pretty good.

Nintendo are applying the same ideas/innovational conventions to their next console, the Wii. If these kinds of features caused the DS to be so successful. Why can't this work for the Wii? Nintendo are adapting, they realise that Dual Screens (with a touch screen), as well as a microphone are applicable innovations to a handheld. As such, they are making their innovation for their home console a new controller, which is completely different to what was in their handheld, but is linked to it in thr sense that they are both new ways to play games (the touch screen and the Wii remote, respectively).

You'd think they'd realise after Sony's failed attempt at stealing away the handheld market.
