New Rayman: Raving Rabbids screens

Wii News | Plus some new interesting facts.
Just before this year's E3, Ubisoft announced that it was developing a brand new Rayman game across all next-gen consoles, as well as current-gen machines. The name of the game, of all things, was Rayman: Raving Rabbids, and featured evil bunnies as the main villains. At first glance, the game's graphics did leave questions concerning exactly what the finished product would look like. Recently however, Ubisoft has released new screens which are a definite step up from the original images and footage released.

Interestingly enough, the release of the new screens has coincided with an interview in the recent issue of Nintendo Power magazine with Raving Rabbids producer, Michael Ancel. Surprisingly, what was revealed in the interview was that Ubisoft has given the Wii version of Rayman Raving Rabbids full attention over the other versions, so much so that they'll be receiving mere ports of the Wii incarnation. "We believe in the Wii and building gameplay around the controller," Ancel stated.

What's new in Rayman's next outing you ask? Apparently, there'll be the inclusion of an offline four player multiplayer mode. As for an online mode, Ancel did hint that he (and Ubisoft) had ideas. “We’re still waiting for more information from Nintendo. We have some ideas that we definitely want to implement; we’re just waiting to hear from them to make sure we can do it.”

Other trinkets of information that have also been revealed is that the Wii-mote can be turned on its side and used as a steering wheel to take control of a Warthog to win a race, something which sounds similar to the expected control schemes of ExciteTruck. Also, in another mode, players will be able to hold down the B button on the underside of the Wii-mote and swing the controller around. On screen, this is supposedly to swing chained cows around.

Currently, Rayman: Raving Rabbids is set to be released along side the Wii at launch. It is unclear though when it will be released on other consoles, though it's safe to bet they will appear around the same time.

After the well branded mix of platform fun and humor in Rayman 3: Hoodlum Havoc, I have to say that I look forward to buying this as a second launch title purchase. That means I'll be slashing Ganon whilest... Punching?.... Rabits! Woo!

Will probably one of my first purchases on the Wii (just look at my avatar!)

I was a huge fan of Rayman 2.

Yea I got Rayman 2 when I bought my dreamcast about 5 - 6 years ago...it's basically been that long since i've even played a Rayman game.....actually No...I bought Rayman Advance for GBA but I only played that for like 1/2 a day.

I also remember that Rayman 2 was technically very impressive for console games (not just platform games) in general.

The art direction was fantastic in Rayman 2. Perhaps it's nostalgia talking, but I still think it's one of the most beautiful games I've ever played.

Rayman on Nintendo 64 is one of my all time favourite games.

Not sure which I prefer, Rayman 2 or 3 as they are both good in their own way. 2 was very epic in feel and the game was fairly long, while Rayman 3 had the frustratingly difficult bonus stages with the funky music and pyschidelic backdrops.

This is on my Wii launch shopping list mainly because I always have to have a platform game to go with a new console.
