Will the Wii be region free?

Wii News | Not even Nintendo knows where it's headed.
One of the best features about the Game Boy and the DS has always been their ability to play import games without modifications. In a recent interview with IGN, Perrin Kaplan, Vice President of Marketing and Corporate Communications for Nintendo of America, the question of whether or not the Wii will be region free was discussed. Her reply left any answers we were hoping to receive relatively ambiguous.

"Clearly, the success of Nintendo DS has offered a lot of lessons about what works in the marketplace - and we certainly intend to keep our fans satisfied," said Kaplin. "For the Wii system, we are finalizing all the relevant details and will be making announcements in the coming months. We know that isn't what you all want to hear (or read) but at least we are being honest! We will share a lot of ways people can play globally, regionally, without boundaries. You're right that the region-free approach has proved to be a successful and attractive feature for Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection on Nintendo DS - we have even blown the doors off our own anticipated numbers! Cost, ease-of-use and player privacy are the three things that were a focus for us with Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection. Those priorities also will apply to the Wii system."

Whilst not clearly a statement that the Wii will be region-free, this definitely opens up the possibility that it could be. Despite this we won't know for sure until Nintendo makes up its mind on this topic. Consoles for a long time have been able to be modified to play these games either via physical alterations or via boot disks, such as the Freeloader, however it would make a lot of gamers happy if there was no need for all the hassles that these things bring. For the moment though there's still a hope that all those bizarre dating sims you’ve been hanging out to play might soon be making their way to a Wii near you, plus postage and handling.

If the Nintendo Wii is region free, goodbye Freeloader.

I don't think that's a bad thing...

An ambiguous news article taken from another site... I learned nothing from Kaplan's response, and nothing when I read it again here.

Wiigion Fwii Wii? Yes Pwiise.

Pretty sure if they make it non-region happy your shiny freeloader will not work.

It's strange that there are reports of the Wii already being in production but something as basic as a policy on region coding has not yet been figured out by the company.

Region Free would be awsome!!

being able to import games without mods, would be cool!!!!

from a business standpoint, region-free consoles don't make sense.

if you are able to control the regionality of your product, you can create more of a monopoly on it.

the hardcore will always bypass it, but Joe Average aren't going to think twice about paying a regions rrp if they don't know any better.

that's not to say i'm hoping there is regionality, i really would prefer it to be region-free, just my thoughts on the matter.

Region free would be awsome. I'd be able to make excellent deals on imports for older games. Particully the ones that are tough to find PAL versions for. Does this mean we can also play GCN games from other regions on the Wii? I won't hold my breath though.

As for the manufacturing, there's been word on only particular parts of the Wii in production. Nintendo could do it by producing all the CPU chips in Month A and all the controllers in Month B style of stratergy. But I don't see them doing it like that. At least, not in the long run that is.

I agree with ObsoletE, espically here in Australia, where the market is quite small. Companies like Nintendo really need to protect themselves against lost income.

I know I will always import a game if I can as it's normally released late here with a higer price. I hardly ever buy DS/PSP titles in Australia because they are always delayed (I always buy in OZ if they come out roughly on time though).

TDU being a perfect example - all us suckers are going to be stuck with the European model and pay full price while the US get it as a budget price title.

region free would be awesome, but i agree with others, they probably shouldnt, and probably wont make it region free

I dont think it was because she/Nintendo doesnt know, She/Nintendo just didnt want to tell us yet.

Isn't PS3 region free?

^ Supposeably is. I think the games will follow the same region encoding as Blu-Ray movies so they can jack up the prices (We're in region 3 or 4 with China and some South American countries I think).

Personally, I'd like to see the Wii region encoded, but differently to the current system.

Like, Region 1: East Asia/South East Asia/Oceania
Region 2: Rest of Asia and Russia
Region 3: Europe
Region 4: Africa/Middle East
Region 5: Americas

Makes more sense to me to have geographical regions rather then, the current this here and everywhere region encoding today.

The frustrating thing really is how we get lumped in with Europe and have to wait for all the language translations and which one of the dozen-allion countries has decided NOT to publish the game, etc. I think going with Asia would make us have a similar problem but compounded because we're PAL and they're NTSC.

Only Japan is NTSC, surely now days they can simply put NTSC and PAL on the same disc on even have on the fly decode/encode built into the Wii. Not to mention Japan is moving into HD.

I'm sure most people here with DSs, for example, probably import some games, but that wont stop them from buying local copies of others. Could a no-region free stance cause everyone to just decide its easier just to grab an American console and not even worry about the Australian scene? And if more and more 'hardcore' people do that, Joe Average will eventually follow suit, too.

It just shows if we didn't get things at ridiculously high prices with the often painfully long waiting time, it wouldn't be a problem.

Region-free has proven success with the DS and PSP.
MS and Sony are following the same path.
If the Wii is not region-free, then Nintendo is just plainly stupid.

I will buy the Wii because I know IT'S REGION-FREE.
So stop all the commotions.

All I worry about is if some sites that you order the games from won’t record the purchase as a sale.
the way i see it is that Nintendo is smart enough to make it region free because the region on the devices extremly affect the products sales.
Firstly it should be region free. Music is and now are DVDs. The handhelds have been since games began.

Making regions stops grey marketing and allows a business to grow in the country.

Now the Internet is a market place in its self and not bound by regions physical regions seems to me to be archaic for this type of product.

I sure hope Wii intends to make the console region free. It would be much easier to get your hands on some of the rarer games later on down the track

The most likely scenario is to include region coding abilities, and then decide on whether or not to use them.

I certainly hope they implement region-free. They did it with the DS, didn't they, so why not?
