E3 2006: Now Sony says buy a Wii!

Wii News | Does everyone love Nintendo now?
Two days after Microsoft's Peter Moore praised Nintendo and suggested gamers should buy a Wii (as well as a 360, of course), Sony's Phil Harrison has said pretty much the same thing to US magazine Gamepro. "I think Peter Moore is exactly right." he said. "I think Nintendo will be the second system consumers purchase after PlayStation 3."

Just as Moore did, Harrison goes on to play Nintendo salesman: "I haven't had a chance to check out the Wii myself, but Nintendo has a great history of innovation and has always done great things for gaming and long may they do so. But as it relates to our strategy they are very much in a different market."

Of course, that last comment (the 'different market' bit) is both a vindication of what Nintendo has been claiming for months, as well as an attempt to marginalise them. Nonetheless, it's great to see some of the animosity between the companies get broken down. Perhaps we all can just get along? It might be a while before Microsoft and Sony praise each other though...

WHat is this guy on about. tMicrosoft saying it made sence as they don't want people to buy the PS3 and their console is already on our shelves. the PS3 is gonna come out around the same time as the Wii. I guess if all 3 companies are for it I'll settle for it and the msaying get our console cancels each other out.

Duhh, Aint that what MS said yesterday?

Sony are Just out to Steal a little bit from everyone this year.
Maybe a cage of parrots in sonys marketing room are causing ideas to go askew??? these are lifes little mysteries we will never know icon_razz.gif

On Second thought, Wii is enough.

Huh!?!?!?!
Seriously, sony is just copying everyone now... even their PR

Wii-Ps3 combo is for me. But for now, just Wii. I'm not rich enough for a ps3 yet >_<

Wii-Xbox360 combo for me at the moment, and in that order. (if I can survive the anticipation and temptation to get a taste of the next gen sooner than later).

If I don't get a PS3 I'll be sacrificing the Metal Gear Solid and Silent Hill franchises - Come to think of it, they're the only games I'm interested in on the PS3, maybe my decision is made already.....Tune in next week!!!

I'll go quietly into the distance...........

They both know Wii is no threat to them.

Its always a "safe bet" to recommend the "second string" guy when they are no threat.

Its like going to Harvey Norman more than likely if they don't have it they aren't going to recommend the main competition. You would recommend a small bit player.

If I was Nintendo I would taking it as an insult. But hey I could be reading it completely the wrong way.

This forum is mostly Nintendo fanboys or follow-the-leader stereotype.
All of the sudden, everybody hate the PS3 because of one controller.

Dont forget how most of you reacted to the Wii name changed. And what happens now? And how you reacted to the PS3 a year ago?

I am suspecting that once the PS3 is release, you guys will post differently. Why? because the Jap/Us consumers will determine how you guys will think.

PS3 is technologically advanced (BD, Cell, GPU) - a multimedia system that will last a long time.

Wii is fun - but once we used to the gameplay, people will look for GRAPHICS and GAMES and MORE GAMES. Wii dont have enough third party supports. Also the most games will be limit because of the controller.

XBOX360 is nothing special - get games on PC instead.

PERIOD

^i love this guy.

They're all good in their own ways. I reckon that if they announced the PS3 as like $600AUD rather than $1000 everyone would be shouting praises on how good it is. But at the moment some people have gone rabid and just hate everything Sony (looking at you Theory). I mean, we haven't even seen much of what's to come, yet people are still comparing apples and oranges?

"This forum is mostly Nintendo fanboys or follow-the-leader stereotype."

I like Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft - Just because I haven't bought an Xbox, Xbox360 or a Gamecube or DS doesn't change that.

"All of the sudden, everybody hate the PS3 because of one controller."

Thats true I didn't like the controller but that opinion sprung from my own perception, not the perception of others.

"Dont forget how most of you reacted to the Wii name changed. And what happens now? And how you reacted to the PS3 a year ago?"

I never hated the name Wii. I liked Revolution better but I still like Wii.

"I am suspecting that once the PS3 is release, you guys will post differently. Why? because the Jap/Us consumers will determine how you guys will think."

If the price of a PS3 isn't the same as its expected to be then maybe yeah but not because of the Japanese and US consumers. The only person who determines what I think is myself, through my own perceptions, expectations and like/dislikes.

"PS3 is technologically advanced (BD, Cell, GPU) - a multimedia system that will last a long time."

That really means nothing to me. I'm an old school gamer and I value gameplay over graphics. Not one game I have ever bought for any console has been because of the graphics alone (yes I admit that graphics do play a part, but only a minor one), its because of the game it is and what the storyline is or what its based on.

"Wii is fun - but once we used to the gameplay, people will look for GRAPHICS and GAMES and MORE GAMES. Wii dont have enough third party supports. Also the most games will be limit because of the controller."

Wii is going to be a hell of a lot of fun. I'm going to buy one of the other consoles as well but not for graphics - for the games that aren't going to be on the Wii. Its only natural for people to get used to something.

I see the controller influencing all games that are made for it because the longer the machine is out and developers get hands on time with the hardware, the better the games will be because of it. They'll get more third-party support you can bet your ass they will.

"XBOX360 is nothing special - get games on PC instead."

So far the Xbox360 isn't really special but tell me a gaming machine in the history of gaming that was really special when it first came out. A gaming machine needs time for developers to get used to the hardware in order to create awesome software.

I'd like to get more games on the PC but the problem is money and also some games I'd rather play with a controller. Thats just my choice as a consumer.

rodvcpetrie,

You arguments are not valid, dude. You based the argument on a personal perspective, whereas I put it as a gerneral perception.
Often, you do contradicts yourself.

When i said the 360 is nothing special, i meant in terms of both hardwares and softwares.
eg.
- Wii is special because games cannot directly port to other consoles because of the controller
- PS3 (special) because it has the BD player, Motion Controller, Eyetoy, Singstar, 1080p, Fully backward compability, exclusive games, etc
- Xbox360 is not special because it has no features that other consoles cannot do. Most games is ported and available on other consoles or PC.

You may not be interested anything apart from gameplay/story but other does. You cannot ignore the facts/features of each console either. PERIOD.

^ mqphu1, rodvcpetrie's argument is just as valid as anyone else's... dude.

Eyetoy and Singstar are things you could do on a 360 easily, they're even bringing out a camera.

The 360 may be like a PC, but it's way cheaper, has stable hardware and plays on your TV. This means that people in general will get games for a 360 rather than trying to make them work on a PC, also, there are exclusive games like halo blah blah.

I don't dislike the PS3 because of the controller. I think it's a stupid addition added at the last minute that no developers even knew about until last week, but it doesn't make the PS3 worse. What makes the PS3 undesirable at the moment is that it's going to be extremely expensive and all the playable games shown had graphics no better than the 360. Sure it can output 1080p, but do you have a 1080p tv? Hardly anyone does. Sure it has a BDrom, but that has yet to prove itself, and won't for some time.

Maybe in a few years the PS3 will have enough exclusives, bd-roms, HD-TVs and developers that can make PS3 games look much better, but as of now I see no reason to dump $1k of my hard-earned on one.

Eh?His aren't valid as his are 'personal perspective' but yours are cause it's 'general perception'?Yeah whatever that means.

Do us all a favour and post some facts, some figures, heck graph, anything, that backs up your opinions, or 'genral perception' as you say it.Like the way you say the wii has no thrid party support(general perception) where as i say it has fantastic third party support, backed up by the fact it is slated to have 81 games at launch, only 9 or so of which are first party(see, those are 'facts', take em for a spin once and a while).

If someone says the ps3 sucks and is too expensive, who are you too say otherwise?Your quite welcome to defend it and highlight it's strengths and the competitors weakness's but at the end of the day we all here make up our owns minds and if joe blow says it sucks, good on him, his decision.

Those 81 are games in development, not games at launch. The full launch list has not been announced, but it's not going to be 81 games unless you include virtual console ones. It does show that there's a fair bit of 3rd party support in any case.

Yeah, Jibbs was joking that you can just make something up and call it a 'fact'. Because that's pretty much what the other guy did.

Lies. Sony said that backwards compability will only be on the games the make the emulation for (like the Xbox 360) and for games that use their development plans, ie no special tricks to get the hardware to preform to it's maximum potentional.

None of the other consoles are triple-cored or have a graphics card with multi-purpose shaders. Also neither the Wii or PS3 have seemless intergration of their online functionality (however it looks like the Wii might come close).

E3 for Sony was for the most part an utter disapointment. It looks like Sony's trying to get back in the good books by supporting Nintendo.

Okay here's why Sony and M$ are doing what they're doing.

1) Sony's new/old controller had the Wii control functions to outrage everyone and get FREE publicity for Sony.

2) M$, enraged with Sony's free publicity, decided to give Wii some praise which put the spotlight back on them (some said this in the M$ topic about this).

3) Sony, in turn played the game of chess and have now put M$ in 'check' by simply getting back the publicity through saying exactly what M$ said replacing Xbox360 with PS3.

4) M$ and Sony will combine together for icecream and chocolate chip cookies (NOT! Just a little moment there to keep you awake)

5) The overall winner here? Nintendo's Wii. As a result of this, many people will buy it as a second console in about 1-3 years.

6) On a side note, after a few experiments at school, I found that 100% of all people that knew NOTHING of Wii thought Sony had a great idea with that. They simply shrugged at Wii when I said that they (Nintendo) had the idea first. 100% of all who knew about Wii said that Sony ripped off Wii. 10% said that Sony always rip things off of Nintendo and make them better (?). I asked for an example from that 10% and they said the Wi-Fi, which caused a debait among everyone. In the end, it was decided Micrsoft first made the Wi-Fi technology through their wireless mouses and keyboard etc (prove us wrong, I'm sure it was a different computer company that made them first), Nintendo simply introduced it to gaming with experimental hardware including the Wave Bird and those Pokemon Fire Red and Leaf Green things! What that has to do with the DS is beyond me. We had a 100min free lession and we got bored.

IF you think about it really MS have the advantage for the moment as their system is the only one with a decent half normal controller.

Im all for Wii though, But really when it comes to PS3 why does no one complain about Sonys lack of originality on the names Behalf as well?
I ask you all this: How many movies "sequels" with the number 3 at the end (i.e. 3rd installment) and they have been good?
Are sony to prove their Prequal will be any better?

I think The PS3 is a Hybrid MOngrel machine and if you think about the reality of it, For every 1000 PS3s they sell thats $1,000,000
So im with "rodvcpetrie" on all his views and those who argue the points they did with him should take a running jump up captn Cooks.

Everyone on this forum is bound to have their own views anyway and to what extent we are here following each other i am not sure???
I kinda would find that hard to believe as we all like different things on different levels.
I just dont think some Ppl here can stomach the fact the PS3 is an atomic blunder and should come with a warning label saying: Buyer Beware. mostly on the cheap version.

I think 1080p is good for all its worth but then begs the question, Will MSs HD-DVD attachment play in 1080p? Id say so as HDMI out would be a valid Output to install to "Futureproof" A product.

Anyone whos got or plans to get a 360 or Wii Kudos to Them icon_biggrin.gif
Anyone whos going to bash the 360 and say its the same as a PC is jaded and overly in denial that they wasted their time waiting for the PS3 when they could have been playing 360 since "ago" for half the price.
And to compare it to a PC is dumb as dog nuts.
Because Id say the majority of us here play mostly console games here and we all probably own PCs as well, But do the majority of our gaming on consoles for many reasons.

Its a Simple format, easily accessable and I love playing games with a wireless controllers (was using logitechs since last yr on xbox) on a Sick TV, I dont really expect anyone who hasnt been brave enough to leave sonys side to share the same views on MS as me.

But as a Past PS2 fanatic, When I went out and bought my xbox I hate to say it but i never picked up a sony controller again after that.
If the PS2 had a brain in it I would have Been loyal but after seeing what xbox could do, you sorta realise MS are doing somthing genuinely right with their product quality.

So whos gonna have the best online service???? icon_razz.gif I think we can all answer this one with a smirk.

CSIRO came up with wi-fi technology as we know it, and most companies (including MS and Apple) have ripped off the technology without paying patent royalties. there's a big court case atm arguing that Australian Patents have no jurisdiction in the US.

if you really want to get technical though, the PS3 controller is more a rip-off of MS's Sidewinder Freestyle controller, than it is of the wii-mote.

who know's which one inspired it more (it IS entirely possible they ripped off the sidewinder before the wii-mote was ever revealed. the wii-mote hasn't been in circulation all that long really.)

Microsoft has said to buy a Nintendo Wii and now Sony has said similar things. Now, all that's left is for Nintendo to state what to buy.
