E3 2006: Super Smash Bros. Brawl confirmed

Wii News | And not a moment too soon.
Noticeably absent from Nintendo's keynote speech was that of the highly anticipated next instalment of the Super Smash Bros. series, which sent fans into a spin about whether or not we will see Super Smash Bros. 3 at E3, let alone this year at all. Well, Nintendo just let the cat out of the bag at an after hours press conference moments ago with some interesting news on some of the new characters that will be appearing on the Wii instalment, that is Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

Confirmed new characters include:
  • Solid Snake (of Metal Gear Solid fame)
  • Pit (of Kid Icarus fame)
  • Zero Suit Samus (the blue no-suit from Metroid: Zero Mission)
  • Meta-Knight (from the Kirby games)
  • Wario
Confirmed returning characters:
  • Mario
  • Link
  • Pikachu
  • Kirby
Three other tidbits of information includes:
  • This will NOT be a launch title – a 2007 release was confirmed by Masahiro Sakurai (series creator).
  • Shigeru Miyamoto mentioned that there would be a robust single player campaign, as well as online multiplayer.
  • A new item was revealed – a Nintendog will run up to and paw the screen to block a player’s view.
  • The game will NOT utilise Wii's motion sensing controls - i.e. Gamecube controls.
Disappointingly, this title will not launch with the Wii after Nintendo mentioned that it should be a launch game at E3 2005. The biggest surprise, though, is definitely the inclusion of Solid Snake. How will the fans of Metal Gear and Super Smash Bros. react? Information is still rolling in on this title, so make sure you stay tuned to PALGN as we bring you more.

It's not a launch title... icon_sad.gif icon_sad.gif Aw man! What a stinker. I was looking forward to it as well. (my most anitcipated Wii game!) Those new charcters are VERY interesting, aside from Wario. I didn't expect to see solid snake, no way. Meta knight is a bit odd, but I'm not complaining. Zero suit samus sounds, alright, a clone of Samus however, I guess.

Woah. No f'ing way.

That looks great (gameplay wise, as usual, and graphic-wise if that is real-time footage). Who cares if its not a launch title? "A rushed title is eventually good, a bad title is bad forever" or whatever that quote is.

And Solid Snake? Wow, didn't see that coming.

I agree, quite a suprise. I want Sonic. I didn't know there was gameplay footage, must check that out.

Check IGN.

Looking at the screens (I'm currently at a whopping 4% of the video, thank you very much 56K) they look pre-rendered, but the whole thing does look mighty impressive.

The character list seems fairly fanboy based, too, (fanboys seem to love Metaknight) which I suppose is good, so if the team is reading this, I request Captain N as the final character. icon_razz.gif

I don't see the point of having the variation of Samus, seems like a bit of a waste.

The trailer of the game is mighty good though - interesting way to introduce Snake to say the least.

I'm liking the potential here for third party characters to make it into this new Smash Bros. game...

Well, from mainly a multiplayer perspctive, I really enjoyed the previous 2 games in the series (especially the GCN version), and so I'm looking forward to using Wario's fart-attack in this new Wii version!

When Snake popped out of that box I couldn;t stop laughing in excitement. Honestly, all they need is the Sonic, Tails and Knuckles, and this game will rock. No doubt they'd have the old characters too, Luigi, Capt. Falcon, Bowser, ect?

Now that they've opened it up to 3rd party characters I certainly wouldn't mind seeing Viewtiful Joe in there.

The trailer is gold, looks like there might be super moves in the game from pickups, and there was a fair bit of what appeared to be gameplay footage in there.

Im seriously pissed the Wii-mote wont be used, they should have at least
a) included both controll styles in the game OR
b) released a cube version for classic control

renegadess, thats exactly what they have done, you can use the Wiimote or the Gamecube controller.

also there is a thing on the Nintendo Japan website asking people what characters they want in the game!!!!

What are the choices, tullyano?

Originally, IGN stated that motion controls would bi in use, but then backtracked and said 'Cube only controls. Yes, a bit disappointing, but I liked the Cube controls anyways.

Snake! Awesome.

Though at this point I think Raiden would be better suited for SSB.

I'd love to see Sonic and Viewtiful Joe, that would be awesome!

Add me to the list for requesting Sonic/Tails/Knuckles and Viewtiful Joe; this game could be even more awesome with a large line-up of characters like that icon_biggrin.gif

Not a launch title, but to be honest I'm not really surprised, given what we knew about it (that the creator of the series hadn't heard anything about it until its announcement last E3).
It's probably only been about a year in development, so. icon_smile.gif

Solid Snake was quite the nice surprise, if I do say so myself. I still haven't watched the trailer but I look forward to it if it is funny, like everyone is saying. I don't care about it not being a launch title either, I mean come on, we've got Zelda AND Metroid. That's enough.

Sonic, Knuckles (who needs Tails? "Yay Sonic's here!" Ugh count me out), Viewtiful Joe and Captain N would rock (especially since there specials would cancel one another; assuming they could work in Joe's VFX).

There should be a Captain N game on the Wii, you could have his belt as an attachment for the Wii-mote (doubles as a NES controller). icon_biggrin.gif
