E3 2006: Super Mario Galaxy touches down

Wii News | First (small) screen inside!
Some of the biggest cheers at the Nintendo event were for the new Mario game for Wii, now known as Super Mario Galaxy.

Nintendo says that in Super Mario Galaxy, Mario will take "the ultimate step... out into space" where he will "defy gravity across all the planets in the galaxy". Apparently the story is about a strange creature that kidnaps Princess Peach and runs off into outer space, and Mario gives chase, exploring bizarre planets all across the galaxy (Not sure how Bowser will fit in to all that!). As expected for a new generation Mario game, Super Mario Galaxy will use the Wii controller and the Nunchuck to it's fullest extent, allowing for dozens of new moves, such as a melee attack achieved by shaking the controller, and a 3D grabbing ability using the controller as a pointer. The space and sci-fi setting will allow for low gravity jumps and physics defying platforming, and apparently aliens will make an appearance.

Super Mario Galaxy is expected to be a Wii launch title, so we'll hopefully be playing with Mario again before 2007!

Nice glasses, sir.

This game looks very promising (ok, game of the year material even). Can't wait to see more of it. icon_biggrin.gif

Now my single most anticipated game. I am a Mario tragic.

I, too, heart Mario, and would have to say its most most anticipated Wii game based on the sole fact that it is Mario.

Wow, that looks great, and for once, the plot is somewhat original. The environment should make for some very interesting moves. I never thought I'd see mario in space though!

Yeah...who woulda thought Mario would make it into space. That just means they can take this game in any direction. Looks very promising.

This will be a game to look back on in the years..

Personally I'm realy over Mario, he's a dead horse that they've flogged too much ... he's got more sequels than Police Academy

Here's the REAL truth about Mario! icon_biggrin.gif icon_wink.gif

That makes it more annoying though ... I wish they'd put that development effort into a new character and storyline.

Nintendo has a 'kiddeh' image but having Mario as your icon doesn't help things.
(Nb I own a GC, and love it and haven't been a kiddy for a LONG time)

Also Nintendo go on about being innovative etc (which they are in many aspects) yet they still keep flogging the same few characters time after time (primarily Mario and DK). MS and Sony don't feel the need to do this.

Maybe Mario needs to lose his image and start doing drugs and appear in a GTA style game icon_wink.gif

man how can you guys pay out mario, THE original videogame character (and no a yellow circle with a triangle cut out of it doesn't qualify as a videogame character)? It's one thing if you don't like his games....but have some respect...if it wasn't for him video games probably wouldn't be where they are today. icon_cool.gif

Yes, the characters remain vastly the same, but the gameplay is very innovative. This game should rock. Like other, I never thought that a Mario game would be in space, but I'm all for the idea.

Still, how can Twilight Princess not get GOTY 2006? icon_razz.gif

Last time i looked sony and microsoft(microsoft more so) haven't been in the game long enough to build up any real franchises that they can flog.

Either way it hasn't stopped them, halo saw 2 releases on the one console and singstar and eye toy are getting whored out nicely.

Not saying that's a bad thing.........but it's hardly just nintendo pimping out there best.

repeating my stance on Mario games. feel free to ignore this if you've been on these forums for a while.
-------------------------
Mario games i have no problems with. Mario sport/spinoff games annoy me though.

^ My sentiments exactly!
icon_biggrin.gif

Well... I also tolerate the "Mario Kart" series, as well as spin-off platformer games, like the "Mario vs DK" series and the "Wario Land" series...
^ same actually. i'd forgotten that there are spin-off platformers as well.
and theres a hell of alot of spinoff platformers, this year it would seem, what with Peach, Yoshi, Wario (that Wario the Thief game that has been a no show so far at E3), Paper Mario and god knows who else getting platformers (2D ones, no less).

At this point, Super Bowser DS, Super Waluigi DS and Super Daisy DS really wouldn't surprise me at all.

^Even if they do release those games, they will all undoubtely be mad games. That's the whole point, anyone against whoring the characters hasn't a leg to stand on with the games being of such high quality and 'fun'.

Meh, i haven't the strength to resurrect this argument, someone post a link to that thread where i laid out my argument and won and everyone ended up saying i was the coolest icon_razz.gif

Oh, I agree wholeheartedly, they would all be awesome. Especially a Waluigi game, because he is the best thing to come out of the Mushroom Kingdom since the Kuribo Shoe.

...well, maybe not, but he certainly doesn't get enough love.
Hahaha, yes, yes man, he deserves more loving!I remember when i first saw that lil pecka goomba jumping around in that boot(smb3......world 5 'sky world' i think)i pissed myself.

And then i killed him and realised i now harnessed the awesome power of the boot!

Those pirahna plants that you couldn't walk on were no match for the hardy sole of my kuribo shoe.Definetely up there, as is the tanuki suit-and the hammer bros suit!AND the frog suit-heres hoping they all make a return or at least a cameo in the new smb.

i'd like to see Bowser DS! icon_biggrin.gif I'd get it.

Some are good, but I'd dispute that they're all of "such high quality". The whole Mario Party thing has turned into a woefully bad joke, that Mario dance game was apparently piss-poor (though I'll admit to not having played that one myself), I personally felt Super Princess Peach was average at best and there's a ton of Mario sports games that are, frankly, a waste of time. So us lot in the "Nintendo whore Mario out way too much" have a pretty strong leg to stand on.
