E3 2006: First Screens of Tony Hawk on Wii

Wii News | Downhill Jam to use the controller differently...
Activision have released some images of the upcoming Tony Hawk's Downhill Jam which is exclusive to the Nintendo Wii, and they're interesting for several reasons.

First is the screen format - rather then just release a screenshot, Activision have taken a leaf from Ubisoft's book and released photographs of people playing that game next to the actual screen. These photographs reveal that Downhill Jam will be played with the Wii controller turned sideways.

You may need to watch your elbows when playing this game!

The graphics in the screens seem to be what we were expecting from the Wii. Check the media panel for more screens, and check back for in a couple of days for some hands on impressions from out staff at E3 ground zero!

Brilliant use of the controller. Unfortunately, I'm still not convinced by the graphical power of the Wii. The textures remain relatively underwhelming.

Am I missing something here?

Check out image 5, looks as though you not only tilt the controller to turn, but also to balance on grinds as well. Never would have worked as well if the remote had been held normally in one hand. Very interesting to see big companies using the controller is different ways.

Lahiru, you're the biggest tease. icon_razz.gif

Ah fair enough then, that is quite clever I guess.

Gotta hate these irritating lifestyle shots of Hip Young Things, mind. icon_kero.gif Sony and Microsoft are probably even more guilty of it, mind.

Hip Young Thing? I reckon she's actually cute in a real world kind of way... Not like MS's politically correct cross cultural snapsot all wearing Xbox gear

I really like the idea... those skating games have always been beyond me.

Only non-gamers twist their bodies like that when playing games. Then again, Wii is design to attract non-gamers... so it could work out well for Nintendo

I know we're talking about Activision here but WTF, looks like a N64 or PS1 game.... icon_cry.gif icon_cry.gif

I hope other 3rd parties don't push this crap...

It doesn't help that the GUI is ugly as hell either. I wonder just how Activision have managed to make a next generation game look worse than its predecessors.
