Revolution's Virtual Console gets expanded as Sega and Hudson sign up

Wii News | Fancy a bit of Mega Drive?
In his keynote speech at GDC this morning, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata announced that the Nintendo Revolution's Virtual Console service won't just be supporting Nintendo systems. In fact, games from Sega's Mega Drive and NEC's Turbografix 16 will be available on the service.

Sega and Hudson have signed on as partners for the service, meaning that various titles from their back catalogue will be available over the service. Iwata later elaborated that not all games from these consoles will be playable, just "the best ones", before claiming that he “considers [Nintendo's] Virtual Console concept to be the gamer version of Apple’s iPod download service.”

Stay tuned to PALGN for more news on the Revolution - if we can pry any out before E3, that is.

Finallly, more people will be able to play PC engine (turbografx in the US) games! Let me assure you, the PC engine was a far better console the the Megadrive. I'd prefer if some kind of HDD was available and Saturn games could be downloaded then Mega Drive.

Isn't there going to be a HDD? What are all these downloadable things getting stored on?

I'm so happy right now. Intesestingly enough, the press conference text I read didn't mention N64 games? Are Nintendo allowing us to download these as well?

I love you Nintendo. This is what I so wanted, as a boy never owning a Megadrive. Looking forward to getting some Sonic action!!!

Oh sweet sweet mother of Marcy..

Now I have to get one at launch.
EvilHayama: I think the games are gonna be saved on to a memory card (which sucks) but seeing how small those games are (even the N64 ones) We should do ok with an 1Gb stick or so.

Just read this on another forum while I was scouting for news:

"Just imagine... in ten years, after Sony and Microsoft are out of the gaming business, we'll be able to play Halo and Jak and Daxter on a Nintendo console"

Not neccesarily going to happen, but a good picture of what this announcement is like.

Co-sign.

This is great news. What? XBOX Live Arcade? Pffft.

Despite how small old games may be, 512 is going to fill up too quick... Then I have to delete my games? Re-download them? Ick.

I am sure they will address the storage issue before they release the console, It will be good to play emulated games legally for a change.

The Rev has 512MB of onboard Flash Memory and has the SD card slot. You can get a 2GB SD Card for around £60 (probably less by the time Rev is released) and 1GB cards are around £30 at the moment.

Average SNES and Mega Drive games come in at around 2-4MB in size (if I remember correctly) so it's going to be a while before space becomes an issue.

Yeah everyone keep in mind the thing aint finalised yet.The clear lack of outputs on the rear of the console(besides an AV out.....*cough*), as seen in those ign picks, confirms that.I mean evn the gc had a digital out.

EDIT-Oh that set of pics on ign that la linked to is in that other topic on the rev.So, go find it.

Here'sa good pic of the rear.

While I do agree that this may be be the final, but this could pretty much be finished.

Note that the AV out looks very similar if not the same as the digital out on the GC. The USB ports for peripherals etc. Remembering this uses Wireless connection for online, so no need for another hole for WiFi. (maybe the USB could be for it too for those without a router.)

Besides that I can't really think of a need for any more holes in the back.

^yeah but av=composite=****.If that was a component output surely it would say digital out or something?

Isn't it possible that digital and analogue signals come out through the same port?
That's pretty a good idea. I wonder if it will just be those two, or more will sign on!

Not worth me dragging myself out of bed at 6am for, but its is very good news.

The Xbox 360 does it. Why wouldn't the Revolution?
