'We don't see it as a competition'

Wii News | Miyamoto on the PS3 launch and what it means for the Revolution.
Nintendo games guru Shigeru Miyamoto has been taking time out to reflect on the ramifications of Sony's recent announcements regarding the launch of the PlayStation 3. In an interview with the Guardian Gamesblog, Miyamoto seemed rather unflustered by all the recent PS3 revelations, commenting that, "Any announcement about PS3 will affect Nintendo. But we don't see it as a competition between the two consoles, although the customers always do."

It's not the first time Nintendo has sought to distance themselves from the competition, and Shiggy was obviously keen to underline the apparent difference between the Revolution and the PlayStation 3, pointing out that, "Sony has taken a long time to create their machine but it's obvious that the direction we (Nintendo) are taking is different to the PS3."

Miyamoto also discussed other subjects in the interview, touching on the lack of innovation in games ("Platform holders usually say we have this great number of titles available but what really matters is variety of titles - customers are more interested in variety and quality then straight quantity"), Nintendo's approach to online gaming ("We are responsible to the shareholders in the company so everything we do has to make sense financially, and until recently we have felt that we couldn't make money out of online gaming") and increasing the number of people who play games ("Our mission right now is to find subjects that will appeal to general people and create a new market").

Sadly, there was no more snippets of information on the Revolution. To read the interview in full, head here.

Good! The Rev is only the first step to a gaming virtual reality, not 'traditional' gaming.

And it may well pick up sales in the inevitible PS3 shortages.

Nintendo can say a thousand times that they aren't competing, but the fact is they are. They're selling every similar devices aimed at the same part of consumers' budgets.

There's still going to be competition, mainly centering around which company can make the most money.

Nintendo are aiming for a different section of the gaming market though, younger, older, "non-gamer" etc. GC has much more titles aimed at kids, as does the GBA and DS. Nintendo want parents to buy a rev for their kids, in addition to any PS3 or 360 for themselves.

The statement is kind of true, because GCN may have lost the race, but they are still earning $$$ for Nintendo. I don't see how Revolution cannot do the same.
