Revolution will be cheapest of the next-generation consoles

Wii News | Nintendo promise to beat PS3 and Xbox 360 on price.
Nintendo of America VP of sales and marketing Reggie Fils-Aime has assured gamers that the company will be launching it's next-generation Revolution console at a considerably lower price than both of its main competitors, Sony's PlayStation 3 and Microsoft's Xbox 360.

Speaking to US games magazine Electronic Gaming Monthly, Fils-Aime said, 'We have to assume that from a pricing standpoint, we will be substantially lower than the competition,' before pointing out that Nintendo were able to do this as Revolution doesn't come with 'all of that added fluff that a gamer, frankly, doesn't [want] - it's not core to gaming.' Whatever could he mean?

Either way, we should have some concrete information on the price of the console at some point this year, with many industry insiders expecting an August announcement, a month in which Nintendo have commonly made major announcements in previous years. Whenever it is though, we'll keep you posted.

Well they manages to make the Gamecube cheaper and more powerful, so they can do it again.

Releated - I read a thread about multi core processors, and that the REV may not have one, and just be a single core beast - basically like brute force power, rather then elegant power. This is how games will be 'easier and cheaper' to develop for it. (apparently programming for multi cores will be as hard or harder then parrallel processing ala saturn or PS2)

Maybe multi core is the 'fluff' that can be dropped?

Could be a good move (simplicity = better results earlier).

By 'fluff', I'm pretty certain ol' Reggie was referring to how the PS3 and 360 will play DVDs, take you online, play MP3 files and iron your shirts.

(The 'Whatever could he mean?' comment was kinda tongue-in-cheek).
